Work Text:

Sungchan's alarm clock blared loudly at 5:00 AM, piercing through the tranquil silence of their small apartment. He groaned, rolling over to silence the offending noise, but careful not to disturb the sleeping figure beside him. Wonbin lay curled up on his side, their two-year-old son, Minho, nestled against his chest. The sight brought a fleeting smile to Sungchan's lips before reality yanked him back. He had to get ready for another long shift at the precinct.

Sungchan quietly slipped out of bed, tiptoeing to the bathroom. He splashed cold water on his face, hoping it would wash away the exhaustion etched into his features. The mirror reflected a man torn between his duty as a police officer and his responsibilities as a father and husband. Dark circles under his eyes told the story of too many sleepless nights and too few moments spent with his family.

As he dressed in his uniform, his thoughts drifted to Wonbin. Pregnant with their second child, Wonbin had been experiencing more fatigue and discomfort lately. The once vibrant and energetic omega now spent most of his days managing the household and chasing after their lively toddler, Minho. It was a relentless cycle, and Sungchan knew it weighed heavily on Wonbin.

Before leaving, Sungchan leaned down and placed a gentle kiss on Wonbin's forehead. "I love you," he whispered, hoping the words would provide some comfort in his absence. Wonbin stirred slightly, mumbling something incoherent in his sleep.

Sungchan left the apartment, the weight of his responsibilities pressing down on him. The precinct was a stark contrast to the warmth of home—a place filled with chaos, danger, and unpredictability. As he navigated through his duties, his mind often wandered back to Wonbin and Minho. The guilt of not being there for them gnawed at him, but he pushed it aside, focusing on the tasks at hand.

Back at home, Wonbin woke to the soft cooing of Minho. He smiled weakly, brushing a strand of hair from his face as he adjusted to the morning light. Minho's bright eyes and infectious giggles were a reminder of the joy and love that filled their lives, even amidst the challenges.

"Good morning, my little prince," Wonbin murmured, lifting Minho into his arms. The effort took more out of him than usual, and he had to steady himself against the bedpost. "Let's get you some breakfast."

The kitchen was a familiar battleground of scattered toys and half-finished chores. Wonbin navigated through it with practiced ease, balancing Minho on one hip while preparing a simple breakfast. As he fed Minho, his mind wandered to Sungchan. He missed the days when they could share these moments together, when Sungchan's presence filled the apartment with laughter and warmth.

After breakfast, Wonbin faced the daunting task of cleaning up and keeping Minho entertained. The fatigue from pregnancy made every movement feel like a Herculean effort, but he pushed through, knowing that Minho depended on him. He set up a play area in the living room, hoping to keep Minho occupied while he tackled the chores.

Hours passed in a blur of cleaning, diaper changes, and playtime. Wonbin's body ached, and he longed for a moment of rest. He glanced at the clock, counting down the hours until Sungchan would return. The days felt interminable, and the nights offered little respite.

As the afternoon sun dipped below the horizon, Wonbin prepared dinner. The smell of simmering stew filled the apartment, a comforting aroma that reminded him of the rare peaceful evenings they shared as a family. He set the table, placing Minho in his high chair with a plate of cut-up vegetables.

Just as Wonbin was about to sit down, the door creaked open, and Sungchan walked in. His presence was like a breath of fresh air, and Wonbin's heart lifted for a moment. But the exhaustion etched into Sungchan's face told him that tonight would not be easy.

"Hey," Sungchan greeted, his voice heavy with weariness. He bent down to kiss Wonbin's cheek, then ruffled Minho's hair. "How was your day?"

"Long," Wonbin replied, trying to keep his tone light. "Minho missed you. I missed you."

Sungchan sighed, sitting down at the table. "I missed you too. I wish I could be here more."

They ate in relative silence, the weight of their unspoken worries hanging over them. Minho's cheerful babbling was the only sound that broke the tension. After dinner, Sungchan took over the task of bathing Minho, giving Wonbin a brief moment to rest.

Wonbin sank into the couch, closing his eyes for what felt like the first time all day. His mind wandered, recalling the early days of their relationship when everything seemed so much simpler. They had been so full of hope and dreams, envisioning a future where they could balance their careers and family life effortlessly. But reality had proven to be far more challenging.

Sungchan emerged from the bathroom with a freshly bathed and pajama-clad Minho. He gently rocked their son to sleep, humming a lullaby that had been passed down through generations. Wonbin watched from the couch, a mixture of love and sadness in his eyes.

Once Minho was asleep, Sungchan joined Wonbin on the couch. They sat in silence for a while, each lost in their thoughts. Finally, Sungchan broke the silence.

"I'm sorry," he said softly. "I know I'm not here enough. I know it's hard on you."

Wonbin shook his head, tears welling up in his eyes. "I know you're doing your best, Sungchan. But it's hard. I'm tired all the time, and Minho needs so much attention. And with the baby coming... I'm scared I won't be able to handle it."

Sungchan reached out, taking Wonbin's hand in his. "We'll get through this. I promise. I'll try to be here more, to help more. You're not alone, Wonbin."

Despite Sungchan's words, the strain between them was palpable. They both knew that promises were hard to keep in their current situation. The demands of Sungchan's job and the challenges of parenting were relentless, leaving little room for anything else.

The days turned into weeks, and the cycle continued. Sungchan's long hours at the precinct showed no signs of letting up, and Wonbin's pregnancy progressed, bringing with it new challenges and discomforts. The fatigue was constant, and the stress of managing everything on his own took its toll on Wonbin's physical and emotional well-being.

One evening, as Sungchan prepared to leave for a night shift, Wonbin felt a sharp pain in his abdomen. Panic surged through him, and he clutched at his belly, tears springing to his eyes. Sungchan noticed immediately and rushed to his side.

"Wonbin, what's wrong?" he asked, his voice laced with concern.

"I... I don't know," Wonbin gasped. "It hurts, Sungchan. Something's wrong."

Sungchan's heart pounded in his chest as he quickly called for an ambulance. The minutes felt like hours as they waited, and Sungchan did his best to keep Wonbin calm. Minho, sensing the tension, clung to Sungchan's leg, his wide eyes filled with confusion and fear.

The ambulance arrived, and the paramedics swiftly assessed Wonbin's condition. They determined that he needed to be taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Sungchan held Wonbin's hand tightly as they loaded him onto the stretcher, whispering reassurances that he would be right behind them.

At the hospital, doctors quickly took over, running tests and monitoring Wonbin closely. Sungchan paced the waiting room, his mind racing with worst-case scenarios. He felt helpless, unable to do anything but wait.

Hours later, a doctor approached Sungchan with a reassuring smile. "Your husband and the baby are both fine," she said. "It was a false alarm, likely caused by stress and fatigue. We'll keep him here for observation overnight, but he should be able to go home tomorrow."

Relief washed over Sungchan, and he nodded gratefully. "Thank you," he said, his voice choked with emotion.

He was allowed to see Wonbin, who looked exhausted but relieved. Sungchan sat by his bedside, holding his hand. "I'm so sorry, Wonbin. I should have been here more. I should have helped more."

Wonbin shook his head weakly. "It's not your fault, Sungchan. We're both doing our best. But we need to find a way to manage this better. For us, and for our children."

Sungchan nodded, determination in his eyes. "We'll figure it out. We'll find a way to balance everything. I promise."

When Wonbin was discharged the next day, Sungchan took a few days off work to help him recover and take care of Minho. It was a small reprieve, a chance for them to reconnect and reassess their priorities.

During this time, they had long, honest conversations about their struggles and fears. They acknowledged the toll that Sungchan's demanding job and Wonbin's responsibilities at home had taken on their relationship. They agreed to make changes, to seek help, and to support each other more effectively.

Sungchan arranged for a more flexible schedule at work, allowing him to be home more often. They hired a part-time nanny to assist Wonbin with Minho and the household chores. These changes provided some much-needed relief and allowed them to share the burdens more evenly.

As the weeks passed, the strain between them began to ease. They found small moments of joy and connection amidst the chaos. Sungchan made a point to be more present, to listen and support Wonbin in every way he could. Wonbin, in turn, felt more at ease, knowing he wasn't alone in this journey.

The day finally arrived when Wonbin went into labor. Sungchan was by his side, holding his hand and offering words of encouragement. It was a long and arduous process, but when their second child, a healthy baby girl, was born, the exhaustion and pain melted away, replaced by overwhelming love and joy.

They named her Sooyeon, and she quickly became the light of their lives. Sungchan and Wonbin worked together to care for their growing family, finding a new rhythm that balanced Sungchan's work and their responsibilities at home. There were still challenges and moments of tension, but they faced them together, stronger and more united than ever.

As they watched Minho and Sooyeon play together, Sungchan wrapped his arm around Wonbin, pulling him close. "We did it," he whispered. "We found our balance."

Wonbin smiled, leaning into Sungchan's embrace. "Yes, we did. And we'll keep finding it, every day."

Their journey was far from over, but they knew that as long as they had each other, they could face anything. The love and resilience that had carried them through the toughest times would continue to guide them, helping them navigate the ever-changing landscape of their lives.
