Work Text:
Paige sat nervously in her favorite coffee shop just near the campus, her fingers tapping anxiously against the tabletop. She had agreed to go on a blind date set up by her teammates, hoping it would distract her from the mounting pressure of the upcoming basketball season. But as the minutes ticked by, her nerves only seemed to intensify.
Finally, a figure approached her table, and Paige's heart skipped a beat. But instead of a stranger, it was her best friend and teammate, Azzi, who slid into the seat across from her with a mischievous grin.
"What are you doing here?" Paige blurted out, confusion evident in her voice.
Azzi chuckled, reaching across the table to take Paige's hand in hers. "Surprise! I'm your blind date."
Paige's mind raced as she tried to process the revelation. Azzi, her best friend, her teammate – the person she had been secretly pining for since they first met on the court. How had she not seen this coming?
.
Flashback to a few weeks earlier, in the locker room after practice.
"Paige, we've noticed you've been a little...distracted lately," KK, one of Paige's teammates said, exchanging knowing glances with the others.
"Yeah, we thought maybe you could use a distraction," Ice chimed in, a sly smile playing on her lips.
Paige tried to brush off their concerns with a casual shrug, but her teammates were having none of it.
"We've set you up on a blind date," KK announced, excitement evident in her voice.
"It's time for you to get out there to have some fun and get laid!" KK added.
And so, despite her reservations, Paige had reluctantly agreed, never imagining that her blind date would turn out to be the person she had been dreaming about for years.
.
Back in the present, Paige stared at Azzi, her mind whirling with a million thoughts and emotions. She had never come out to her friends or anyone else for that matter, afraid of how they would react. And now here was Azzi, sitting across from her with that same playful grin, completely oblivious to the turmoil raging inside Paige's mind.
"Paige, are you okay?" Azzi's voice broke through Paige's thoughts, concern etched on her features.
Paige forced a smile, hoping to mask the inner turmoil threatening to consume her. "Yeah, I'm fine. Just... surprised, that's all."
Azzi's expression softened, her fingers tightening around Paige's hand. "Hey, whatever happens, I'm here for you, okay? You can talk to me about anything."
Paige's heart ached at Azzi's words, the weight of her unspoken feelings pressing down on her chest like a leaden weight. She wanted to tell Azzi everything. About the way her heart raced whenever Azzi was near, about the sleepless nights spent tossing and turning, tormented by thoughts of what could never be. But the words remained lodged in her throat, trapped by fear and uncertainty.
.
As they sat in awkward silence, sipping their drinks and avoiding each other's gaze, Paige couldn't shake the feeling of unease that settled over her like a heavy blanket. She had never been good at hiding her emotions, and she feared that Azzi would see right through her carefully constructed facade.
But to her surprise, Azzi seemed content to simply sit with her, offering quiet words of comfort and support without pressing for answers. It was both a relief and a torment, knowing that Azzi was so close yet so far out of reach.
As the evening wore on, Paige found herself opening up to Azzi in a way she never had before. They talked about everything – their hopes and dreams, their fears and insecurities, the highs and lows of life on and off the basketball court. And with each passing moment, Paige felt the walls she had built around her heart begin to crumble, revealing the raw vulnerability that lay beneath.
But still, she couldn't bring herself to confess the truth – to tell Azzi how she felt, to risk everything for the chance at something more. It was a risk she wasn't sure she was willing to take, not when the stakes were so high.
As they left the coffee shop and made their way back to the campus dorms, Paige couldn't shake the feeling of regret that gnawed at her insides. She had missed her chance, she realized, too afraid to seize the moment when it mattered most. And now, as Azzi bid her goodnight with a warm gentle hug and a whispered promise to see her at practice tomorrow, Paige couldn't help but wonder if she had let the love of her life slip through her fingers.
.
Days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months, but still, Paige couldn't shake the memory of that fateful night. The night she had let fear and uncertainty dictate her actions, the night she had let Azzi slip away without a fight. And as she watched from the sidelines, her heart ached with every stolen glance, every shared laugh, every whispered secret between Azzi and their teammates.
But despite the pain that threatened to consume her, Paige refused to give up hope. She knew that someday, somehow, she would find the courage to confess her feelings to Azzi, to lay her heart bare and risk everything for the chance at something more. Because no matter how long it took, no matter how many obstacles stood in their way, Paige knew that their love was worth fighting for and she would do whatever it took to make her dreams a reality.
.
Still, something had changed between the two of them. Over the next few months, Paige struggled to maintain her composure as she watched Azzi pass by and move on with her life, seemingly unaffected by the unresolved tension between them. They still spent time together, laughing and joking as always, but there was an undeniable sense of something more. A tension that neither of them seemed willing to address.
One day, as Paige walked into the locker room after practice, she overheard a conversation that made her heart sink. Azzi was talking to another teammate, Aubrey, her voice filled with an excitement that Paige hadn't heard in a long time.
"So, I finally asked her out," Azzi said, her eyes shining with happiness. "And she said yes! We're going out this weekend."
Paige's stomach churned as she forced herself to keep moving, pretending she hadn't heard a word. But the jealousy that flared up inside her was impossible to ignore. Who was this girl? How had she managed to capture Azzi's attention so quickly?
As the days passed, Paige couldn't help but notice the subtle changes in Azzi's behavior. She seemed happier, more relaxed, and it was all because of this new girl. Paige watched in silent agony as Azzi and her new girlfriend, Ellie, grew closer, their affection for each other evident in every stolen glance and whispered conversation.
.
One evening, as the team gathered at their favorite hangout spot, Paige found herself sitting across from Azzi and Ellie. The sight of them together, so effortlessly happy, was like a dagger to her heart. She tried to focus on the conversation around her, but her eyes kept drifting back to Azzi, her smile brighter than Paige had ever seen.
"Paige, you okay?" Nika asked, noticing her friend's distraction.
"Yeah, I'm fine," Paige lied, forcing a smile. "Just tired, I guess."
Nika didn't seem convinced, but she let it go, turning her attention back to the group. Paige took a deep breath, trying to steady her racing heart. She needed to get a grip, to find a way to move on and be happy for Azzi. But it was easier said than done.
As the night wore on, Paige found herself increasingly jealous of the easy intimacy between Azzi and Ellie. Every time Ellie laughed at one of Azzi's jokes or reached out to touch her arm, it felt like a physical blow. Paige couldn't help but wonder what it would be like to be in Ellie's place, to be the one who made Azzi smile like that.
.
One night after a particularly tough practice, the team decided to unwind at a local bar. Paige tried to lose herself in the music and the laughter, but her eyes kept drifting to Azzi and Ellie. They were sitting close together, talking quietly and smiling at each other in a way that made Paige's chest ache.
Unable to take it any longer, Paige excused herself and stepped outside, the cool night air a welcome relief from the suffocating atmosphere inside. She leaned against the wall, taking deep breaths and trying to steady her nerves.
"Paige?" Azzi's voice startled her, and she turned to see her standing in the doorway, concern etched on her face. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah, just needed some air," Paige replied, forcing a smile. "It's a bit stuffy in there."
Azzi stepped closer, her eyes searching Paige's face for any sign of what was really going on.
"Are you sure? You seem... different lately."
Paige's heart ached at Azzi's concern, but she couldn't bring herself to confess the truth.
"I'm fine, really. Just stressed about the season, I guess."
Azzi nodded, but the worry didn't leave her eyes. "If you ever need to talk, you know I'm here, right?"
"Yeah, I know," Paige replied, her voice barely above a whisper. "Thanks, Azzi."
As they stood there in the quiet night, Paige felt a flicker of hope. Maybe one day, she would find the courage to tell Azzi how she really felt. But for now, she would have to be content with the friendship they shared, even if it meant watching from the sidelines as Azzi found happiness with someone else.
.
2 weeks later
Paige's jealousy grew with each passing day, a constant companion that gnawed at her insides. She tried to focus on basketball, to pour all her energy into the game, but it was impossible to escape the constant reminders of what she had lost.
One evening, as the team and some of their friends gathered for a movie night, Paige found herself sitting next to Azzi and Ellie once again. The couple's whispered conversations and shared laughter were like salt in an open wound, and Paige could feel her composure slipping.
As the movie played, Paige's mind wandered, her thoughts consumed by images of Azzi and Ellie together. She imagined what it would be like to be the one sitting next to Azzi, to feel her warmth and hear her laughter up close. The longing was almost unbearable, and she had to bite her lip to keep from crying out.
During a quiet moment in the film, Ellie leaned over and kissed Azzi on the lips, a simple, tender gesture that made Paige's heart ache with envy. She couldn't take it anymore.
"I need some air," she mumbles as she fled the room, her emotions threatening to overwhelm her.
Outside, the blonde paced back and forth, her mind racing. She couldn't keep doing this to herself. She needed to either tell Azzi how she felt or find a way to move on. But the thought of confessing her feelings was terrifying. What if Azzi didn't feel the same way? What if it ruined their friendship forever?
As she wrestled with her emotions, the door opened, and Azzi stepped out, her eyes filled with concern.
"Paige, what's going on? You've been acting strange for weeks."
Paige took a deep breath, trying to steady her racing heart. "Azzi, there's something I need to tell you," she began, her voice trembling with the weight of her unspoken feelings.
Azzi's eyes widened, and she took a step closer, her expression a mix of curiosity and worry. "What is it, Paige?"
Paige hesitated, the words lodged in her throat. She could feel her heart pounding, her palms sweating. This was it. Her chance to finally confess everything. But as she looked into Azzi's eyes, filled with genuine concern, the fear of rejection and the potential loss of their friendship held her back.
"Nothing," Paige finally said, her voice barely above a whisper. "It's nothing. I'm just... tired," she added.
Azzi frowned, clearly unconvinced, but she didn't press the issue. "Okay. But remember, I'm here for you, no matter what."
Paige nodded, forcing a smile. "I know. Thanks, Azzi."
As Azzi went back inside, Paige leaned against the wall, her heart heavy with unspoken words. She knew she couldn't keep hiding her feelings forever. But for now, she would have to find a way to cope with the jealousy and the longing, to be happy for Azzi even if it meant watching her from afar. Because no matter how much it hurt, Paige knew that Azzi's happiness was worth more than anything else.
