Work Text:

Mumei was civilisation, the beloved brown haired owl and apart of the council that governs the earth. But, she wasn’t always an immortal representation of civilisation, she was once a mortal, just like the rest of the world. And her journey starts when she was a child.

A dark, cold night reigns terror over the area, a snowstorm making snow fall everywhere in the area, alone in the middle stood a cabin, a warm light shining through the windows, contrasting the harsh conditions outside. And outside the cabin was a young girl, seeming to be only about 6, two owl feathers stuck onto her head, small wings protruding out of her clothes and back. medium length brown hair flowing behind her as the wind harshly blew, her boots made prints in the snow as she trudged on, lost in the cold white darkness of the snowy night.

Inside the cabin, was a man, blonde long-ish hair flowing elegantly, he was in a green robe and had a green hat on, his back adorned with a pair of giant jet black crow like wings. As he sat there he sipped a cup of tea, glad to be inside away from the harsh cold. But from the window he peaked outside, he saw a glimpse of… something. No; someONE.

He got up, setting his cup of tea down and walked to the door, grabbing a sword made out of a mysterious black metal which emmitted a purple glow. Fearing the worst of course, it could be anything. So he set out into the cold snowy area, looking through the thick fog of snow, and he could see the girl barely even walking anymore and slowly crawling, hands red from the cold. He worriedly rushed over, as the girl was losing consciousness. He scooped her up into his arm, the other holding the sword. And he soon ran back to the cabin to warm her up.

Inside, the girl slowly awoke an hour later, around her a brown cloak with white symbols on the edge, the inside of the hood a nice deep green. She looked around and saw the man walking over to her. She flinched, not knowing who he was, and being rightfully worried. He gave a gentle smile which made her be a bit less hesitant and scared as he crouched down near her. His wings flapping gently behind him as she watched in slight awe. Her own wings twitching in excitement.

The first thing he asked was a simple question, a question almost anyone could answer “Hey mate, what’s your name?” … A question she couldn’t answer, she couldn’t even remember why she was in the snowy area in the first place. She just remembered waking up near there and having to trudge in a random direction and hoping for the best. So she answered simply to his question “I- I.. don’t know..” He paused for a moment, seemingly a bit shocked, but soon after he gave her another warm smile as he reached his hand to pat her on the head.

“Then I’ll figure out a name for you, my name is Philza, but you can call me Phil or Mr.Phil” His voice was calming and nice, as he rubbed the top of her head she soon melted any hesitation she had, being an innocent and trusting child of course. “Thank you Mr.Phil!” Her reply was short and sweet, but nonetheless he let out a small chuckle to her words. “Alright, introductions are done, you want some food kid?” She let out a small giggle and happily agreed to his request.

A few years pass, the girl is now 13, her name is Mumei.

“Hold the sword steady, be guarded amd let out no weaknesses” Phil said to the brown haired teenager holding a wooden training sword. She took a deep breath, heeding her father figure’s advice and holding the sword with a strong grip and slashing the training dummy, precise gashes appear in it as cotton falls out of it slowly. He claps as he chuckles at her motions and Mumei beams with pride, hopping up and down in her excitement as Phil pats her head like he always does.

“Yknow kid, you really have potential in combat, you learn quick with your sword” Phil says proudly, his wings flapping gently behind him, Mumei chuckles, her own wings following his as she hugged him cheerfully. “It’s all thanks to you dad!” He smiles at being called “Dad” it fit him, it just felt right. He chuckles, happy to be her assistant in learning how to fight.

Suddenly a crow caws near them and swoops onto Phil’s arm, holding a green gem and a note, Mumei glances at it curiously and Phil looks confused, he looks over the note, his expression growing more confused by the second, at the end he mutters “Dream..? Who is he..?” Mumei looks up at her dad, thoroughly bamboozled at his muttering, trying to take a peak for herself. He quickly folds up the note and puts it in his pocket “It’s nothing important dear, why don’t we go back and get some food eh?” He smiles a bit more than usual, almost as if it was forced. But Mumei brushes it off and nods excitedly as they go back into the cabin.

A few nights pass, Phil is anxious, the gem from the man named “Dream” was glowing brighter by the minute, so he makes a quick decision and goes to Mumei’s room where she was just drawing on some paper, sketches of random nature, flowers, trees, mushrooms… But anyways, he quickly speaks to her, masking his anxiousness “Mumei, I’m gonna go out for a bit to do something, go to bed soon okay?” She gives a nod and doesn’t question further to his luck.

He nods and closes the door to her room and walks to the gem that was glowing bright green at the point, he grimaces and takes it and walks into the forest holding it delicately in his hand. But as he reaches a certain point, the gem glows even brighter and soon it crumbles, cracks, it turns into dust, he yelped in surprise, as the powder glowed, going around his body as a portal appears beneath him and sucked him into the depths without a scream or word.

Mumei waits, until the next morning, then the next day. Then the next, then the next, then the next.. And soon a week goes by, food is getting sparse and her dad had not returned yet, she grew concerned, but she had a gut feeling he wasn’t coming back for a long time if not forever. So she grabbed the brown cloak, a diamond sword prepared for her by Phil for emergencies, and set off to try to find her father.

But in the end she’ll become so much more.
