Work Text:
The door swung open as Kazuha emerged from the recording booth, sweat glistening on her forehead. She tugged at her ponytail, eyes searching the room.
"How'd it sound?" Sakura spun in her chair, eyebrows raised.
Kazuha shrugged. "Could've been worse."
Across the room, Yunjin sank deeper into the couch, chin resting on her hand. Eunchae nudged her with an elbow. "You've been moping all day."
"Just thinking about the set list." Yunjin's gaze flicked to Chaewon, who nodded knowingly.
Sakura leaned forward. "What's wrong?"
A heavy sigh as Yunjin sat upright. "We're still one song short for the album."
The room fell silent. Chaewon broke it first, slapping her palms on her thighs. "Then we better get writing."
Kazuha grabbed a water bottle, downing half in one gulp. "I'm ready when you are."
Eunchae jumped to her feet, clapping her hands together. "Okay. What ideas do we have?"
Yunjin’s pencil tapped onto the notebook. “Not many.”
Eunchae plopped down, resting her elbows on the table. "Well, we can't exactly force inspiration, can we?"
Chaewon shook her head slowly. "We can’t. But we're running out of time."
Tense silence filled the room as pens hovered over blank pages. Kazuha drummed her fingers against the table's edge.
"Maybe we could try an upbeat track?" She glanced around. "Maybe something like a party track?"
Yunjin straightened. "Already have one. No-Return."
Sakura's brow furrowed. "We need something different. A change of pace."
Chaewon nodded slowly. "Right. We've got the party anthems covered." She tapped her pen restlessly. "What about something more...emotional? Tug at the heartstrings?"
"Like a breakup song?" Kazuha asked, swirling the last sips of water.
Eunchae's eyes lit up. "That doesn’t sound bad. Imagine the live performances. We could really sell the heartbreak."
Yunjin leaned back, considering. "That’s a risk. Ballads don't always perform as well on the charts."
"Then, just a B-side" Sakura countered. "But it's still a must-have for the album."
A weighted pause as they weighed the idea. Kazuha set her bottle down with a decisive thunk.
"Anyone have a heartbreak experience worth writing about?"
The question hung in the air. Four pairs of eyes turned towards Yunjin.
"What?" She straightened defensively. "Why's everyone looking at me?"
Chaewon arched an eyebrow. "Well...you were the one moping about earlier."
"I wasn't moping!" Yunjin shot back, then deflated with a sigh. "Okay, fine. Maybe I was a little down."
Eunchae leaned forward, chin resting on her hands. "Care to share with the class?"
An uncomfortable silence stretched out. Yunjin chewed her lip, avoiding her bandmates' expectant looks.
Finally, she spoke in a low mumble. "It's...about Fearnot."
Kazuha's pencil stilled, eyes widening. The others exchanged surprised glances.
"Okay," Sakura prompted gently.
Yunjin exhaled sharply. "It’s just that.. this is our first album. As in, our first full album. And I just.." She trailed off with a helpless shrug.
Chaewon reached over, giving Yunjin's hand a soft squeeze.
Yunjin's words hung heavy in the air. The others exchanged concerned glances, unsure how to respond.
Kazuha leaned forward, her voice gentle. "What about it, unnie? Talk to us."
Yunjin's eyes flicked up, meeting Kazuha's gaze briefly before darting away again. She took a shaky breath. "I just...I feel like we're not ready. Like I'm not ready."
Chaewon frowned. "What do you mean? We've been working our asses off for this."
"I know, I know." Yunjin waved a hand dismissively. "It's not about the process itself. It's..." She trailed off, struggling to find the words.
Eunchae scooted closer, placing a hand on Yunjin's knee. "It's what?"
Yunjin swallowed hard. "It's the pressure. The expectations. Everyone's watching us, waiting to see if we'll follow up." Her voice cracked slightly. "What if we're not good enough?"
Sakura shook her head fiercely. "Don't say that. We ARE good enough. We've poured everything into this album."
"Unnie's right," Kazuha chimed in. "We can't let doubt hold us back now. Not when we're so close."
Yunjin nodded slowly, but the uncertainty still clouded her eyes. Chaewon leaned back, arms crossed.
"You know what I think?" She waited until all eyes were on her. "I think we need to channel these feelings into the song. Use them to fuel something raw and real."
Eunchae perked up. "Like taking our fears and turning them into art?"
"Exactly." Chaewon grinned. "Heartbreak doesn't always have to be about romance. It can be about dreams, ambitions, self-doubt..."
Kazuha grabbed her pencil, scribbling furiously. "I like it. It's vulnerable. Honest."
Yunjin straightened, a spark of determination igniting in her eyes. "Wait. Hold on. What if.."
Sakura smiled softly. "Yeah?"
Yunjin leaned forward. "What if we turn it into a thank you song? A song for Fearnot. Thanking them for being by our side."
Eunchae's eyes widened. "Like they’re our strength? Our light?"
"Exactly." Yunjin nodded, the idea taking shape. "We can trade verses, each one representing a different sentiment."
Kazuha tapped her pencil against her chin thoughtfully. "Maybe we could express the worries, the insecurities..."
"And we could fuel them determination, with the will to overcome," Sakura finished, a smile spreading across her face.
Chaewon clapped her hands together. "I love it. It's like a journey from uncertainty to confidence."
Yunjin grabbed a fresh sheet of paper, scribbling down lyrics as they came to her. "We can start with the uncertain side, all hesitant and unsure."
She cleared her throat and sang softly, "In truth, she’s not all fearless, but you… You help her fear less."
Chaewon jumped in, her voice trembling. "We gotta move forward, don’t be afraid anymore."
Eunchae leaned over Yunjin's shoulder. "I believe in you, i’m sure on my way."
Sakura grinned, catching on. "Under the lamppost, you and me under that light."
The room buzzed with energy as they bounced ideas back and forth, lines weaving together into verses, verses blending into a chorus.
Chaewon sat back, a smile on her face as she watched her teammates work.
Yunjin's pencil flew across the page, her earlier despair replaced by fierce concentration. The others chimed in with suggestions, melodies, harmonies.
They were more than just bandmates, more than friends. They were a team, a unit.
The song took shape before their eyes. A battle cry for anyone who'd ever doubted themselves, who'd ever felt small in the face of their dreams.
They poured their hearts into every word, every note. Because this wasn't just another song.
It was their story. Their truth.
And they were ready to share it with the world.
Kazuha leaned back, a satisfied smile playing on her lips. "This is it, guys. This is the song we needed."
Yunjin nodded. "It feels right. Like everything's falling into place."
Eunchae bounced in her seat. "I can already picture the choreography, the staging..."
Sakura chuckled. "One step at a time. Let's finish writing it first."
Chaewon stood up, stretching her arms above her head. "I think this calls for a snack break. We've earned it."
The others murmured in agreement, the tension from earlier dissipating into a sense of accomplishment, of unity.
As they filed out of the room, Yunjin hung back, her gaze lingering on the lyrics scrawled across the page. The words that had poured out of her, out of all of them, in a moment of raw honesty.
She traced a finger over the title at the top: "Fearnot."
A smile tugged at the corners of her mouth. They were everything. They where the ones who believed in them the most. Fearnot. In the face of doubt, of pressure, of uncertainty.
They had each other. They had their music. And they had Fearnot, the ones who stood by them through it all.
Yunjin set the paper down, the smile never waving as she followed her bandmates out of the room.
The future was bright. They lighted up their life.
