Speaking Truth To Pippa

Work Text:

Pippa went running down the hallway wrapping her knuckles on the glass of her Uncle Tony's garage. "Jarvis, let me in," Pippa said, rubbing at her tear streaked face, "I need Uncle Tony. Daddy went running with Auntie Nat in the park."

Jarvis opened the door to Pippa after he alerting Tony.

"Uncle Tony," Pippa said, continuing to cry.

Tony picked Pippa up and held her against his chest. "What's the matter?" Tony asked.

"PBS said that Uncle Steeb died in the war," Pippa said. "Why did they say that? Uncle Steeb not dead like Poppy."

"J, get Steve down here," Tony said, "and see if you can get a hold of Clint. He needs to come home, but don't alarm him."

"Yes, sir," Jarvis said.

"What is it?" Steve asked, entering Tony's garage.

Pippa leaned toward her Uncle Steve and held out her arms to him.

Steve took Pippa into his arms and let her cling to his neck. "What's happened?" Steve asked.

"Did you die in the war?" Pippa asked

"She's too young for this," Steve said, looking at Tony for help.

"Then use Pippa words," Pippa said.

"What are Pippa words?" Steve asked, never hearing that phrase before.

"We don't keep things from Pippa," Clint said as he came in with Natasha. 'We use words and concepts she can understand. What happened? You were watch Big Bird when I went running with your Auntie Nat."

"PBS say Uncle Steeb died in a war," Pippa said.

"What were you watching?" Clint asked.

"After Big Bird a movie about Uncle Steeb came on," Pippa said.

"The Ken Burns documentary about Steve?" Tony asked.

"Probably," Clint said.

"Pippa," Tony said. "Steve was very sickly when he was a little boy so he couldn't go to war with his friend Bucky. My Daddy and a scientist like your Uncle Bruce made him bigger and stronger so he could go."

"But, the man on the movie said Uncle Steeb crashed into the ocean and died so the people in the city wouldn't die," Pippa said, "like Uncle Tony flew the bomb into outer space."

"She knows about that?" Clint asked.

"She overheard something Pepper and I were talking about," Tony said.

"Your Uncle Tony is going to try and not do that again," Clint said.

"But, Master Yoda said, 'Do or do not there is no try'," Pippa said.

"That applies to all of you," Pepper said as she entered the garage. "No unnecessary risks especially you, Mr. Jumps Off Building. Phil couldn't;t have approved of that."

"No," Clint said, "but, he understood."
