Work Text:

Remus had packed and repacked their bags at least three times, adding a couple of books he wanted to take and replacing the vests Sirius had packed with thick jumpers. They were going camping for the long weekend and while the days were sunny and pleasant, the evenings were still chilly, even more so when the wind blew.

He went into the kitchen and began to check off the list of food he’d prepared for their trip. He had the meat for the BBQ, coleslaw, sauces, corn, potato salad, pork pies and sausage rolls, bacon for breakfast and a whole box of eggs. He’d packed beer, water and a bottle of wine for when Sirius wanted something other than the beer. Plus, of course, he’d packed a good supply of treats. He had chocolate and biscuits and Haribo.

He ticked off each item as he put it into its designated bag. The only thing he hadn’t packed was the big bag of marshmallows. He grinned at the squashy sweets as he took the bag down from the top shelf of the sweet cupboard. He was so tempted to open the bag and nick one of the pink and white confections. But he knew that if he had one he’d eat the whole bag, and he needed them for later. So he put them on top of the snack bag so they didn’t get squashed.

Sirius helped him get everything into the car. He checked his list and everything was checked off. So off they went.

The campsite was next to a beautiful forest. He’d picked that one because of the multiple trails, one of which led to the beach, where he’d planned to have a picnic lunch the following day, but for tonight they were staying there and having burgers cooked on their travel BBQ.

Getting the tent up took far longer than Remus had planned. Sirius kept running away with the poles and trying to wing it instead of letting Remus read the instructions. But finally, the last peg was pounded into the ground with the little mallet Remus had tucked into the tent bag, and they settled into their foldable chairs.

“The BBQ should be hot enough in 20 minutes.” Sirius grinned, clapping his hands together. He leaned over and kissed Remus, making a happy little humming noise. “This is going to be so much fun.” Remus sighed a long deep breath, letting go of his stress from the day and relaxing into holiday Remus.

Twenty minutes later, Sirius was busy at the grill watching the sizzling burgers, while Remus cut the brioche buns ready to be toasted and took out the sides and placed them on their little table. He got out the salad and cheese ready for the burgers and lined up the condiments. “Can you get me a beer please?” Sirius asked as he checked the underside of the burgers.

“Of course,” Remus beamed, and dug into the cool box. He took two out and using the bottle opener he’d glued to the side of the cool box, he opened them. “Here you go, sweetheart.” He said as he handed the beer to Sirius.

“Thank you, darling,” Sirius winked at him as he took a sip.

The burgers were delicious. Sirius may not be able to cook anything fancy, but he made a mean burger. Happy and fat, the boys settled in for the evening. They’d splurged on the fancy chairs a few years ago. They could drop the backs down and lay them flat. So, they dropped them and they stared up at the stars.

It was beautiful, the moon was just a tiny slither in the inky black sky, letting the stars shine bright.

Remus must have let his eyes close as he was suddenly aware of banging to his right. He sat up and Sirius had the kettle full of water and was attempting to light the portable stove. “Just light will you!” He grunted as he jabbed the little button over and over, making it click but not ignite.

“What you doing, love?” Remus asked. Sirius jabbed the button again.

“Trying to start this thing, so I can boil some water, so I can make you a hot chocolate. But the damn thing won’t light!” Remus stood up and took over. He checked it over and found the problem. He picked up the stove and flipped it over, there wasn’t a gas canister in it. “Dang it!” Sirius snorted and went back to the bag he’d gotten the stove out of and tossed the little canister to Remus.

Remus plugged it in and clicked the starter again and the flames shot out of the burner.

“There we go,” He laughed, as he put the kettle above it. “Just needed a bit of smarts to figure it out.” Sirius grabbed him in a hug and pressed kisses all over his face and neck. Making him snort with laughter as it began to tickle. “Get off you idiot,” He gasped through his laughter. Sirius doubled down and kissed Remus more frantically.

Remus was saved by the whistle of the kettle as it began to boil.

“I’ll make the drinks, you get the marshmallows and the skewers, and we can roast them on what's left of the embers.” Sirius told him as he took the kettle off the heat and began to pour the scalding water into mugs.

Remus went to the snack bag. The marshmallows weren’t there, but the skewers were. He took everything out of the bag and nothing. He was sure he’d put them in. The list said he’d put them in. He opened the car and checked in there. They weren’t in the boot or on the backseat. He checked the entire car thoroughly, but they weren’t in there. He started on the other bags. He pulled everything out. It was chaos, but still he couldn’t find them.

He went inside the tent next and pulled all their clothes out, checked the duvet and pillows. Those marshmallows were not on this camp site.

“Where are my marshmallows?!” He cried frustratedly into the last bag he’d emptied.

“Remus, what are you doing?” Sirius called from outside.

“I can’t find the marshmallows. I swear I packed them, but they’ve vanished.” He sighed as he came back out of the tent.

“Last I saw them, they were near the chairs, ready for later.” Sirius replied, screwing up his brow as he thought. That made something click in Remus’s mind. He’d taken the marshmallows out of the snack bag earlier when he was setting up the things for the burgers, so that everything they’d be eating tonight would be out.

They’d flattened the chairs! He pushed the backrest up and there in the grass was the bag. He grabbed it and hugged the squashy treats. He looked around at the mess he’d created, all over a bag of marshmallows.

“Sorry,” He told Sirius, waiting for a chastisement, but it never came. Sirius chuckled at him.

“It’s fine, I love your crazy. Let’s get cleaned up and crack that bag open.” He blew Remus a kiss as he bent to put the pots and pans back in their bag and moved onto the cool box. Annoyingly, it took longer to put everything away than it did for Remus to take it all out.

Somehow, the embers were still hot enough for them to roast the marshmallows over, and their hot chocolate was at the perfect drinking temperature. Sirius sat down on the same chair as Remus as they held their skewers over the heat watching the marshmallows slowly toast on the outside.

Sirius wrapped his arm around Remus and held him close. “I love you, Remus,” He murmured into his ear. Remus let his head drop onto Sirius’s shoulder.

“I love you too.” He turned and kissed his boyfriend under the star-lit sky, forgetting about the marshmallows on the other ends of the sticks they were holding. They didn’t even notice when the marshmallows set on fire and began to burn. They were so wrapped up in each other. Anyway, some things were more important than squishy, sugary marshmallows.
