with you, in the middle

Summary:

It was Monday.

Except it wasn't just any Monday, because it was May 27th.

Notes:

Tokyo Revengers was a masterpiece created by Ken Wakui.

I did not gain any material profit from this fanfiction.

Work Text:

It was Monday.

Which would be a regular day when Mitsuya would come home half-dragging himself through the front door, moaning about the loads of work that had greeted him after the perfect weekend. Or Draken groaned as he took off his shoes, complaining about the rude customers who didn't even wait until Wednesday or Thursday to ruin his week.

It was Monday.

Except it wasn't just any Monday, because it was May 27th.

Their middle birthday.

It started back when they were young and just freshly dated, when one of the girls from Home-Ecs Club (it was Mari Shimura to be precise) asked about him and Draken's birthday date and apparently helped to count the exact date for their middle birthday.

"Middle birthday?"

"Yes, Mitsuya-san, it's the day exactly halfway between two people's birthdays. Middle birthday is sort of your shared birthday."

The concept was actually interesting for Mitsuya that when he proposed to Draken to celebrate the said day, Draken was beyond excited.

They weren't exactly romantic people, but they tried their best to celebrate the birthday as something special. Even if it was standardly common like going out for lunch/dinner, or planning a date to spend time together, mostly those accompanied by a surprise gift at the end of the day.

They agreed that their respective birthdays were important occasions, and should be treated better with more regards.

So yeah, no fancy dining or well-thought gifts, only cards. Silly, funny, corny ones. Along with the subtle competition of whoever could make the other laugh harder with his card.

Draken and Mitsuya genuinely enjoyed the concept of the middle birthday, that they continued the tradition of exchanging the greeting cards to the day.

They undoubtedly kept all of the cards they received from each other neatly.

Now, even after they were engaged and even now married, nothing changed. They still celebrated their middle birthday like they did back when they were teenagers.

It was Monday.

Except it wasn't just any Monday, because it was May 27th.

Their middle birthday.

It was May 27th, time for exchanging the card.

"You did not—"

They both said in unison, and for a while, they stared at each other in silence as if they genuinely did not know what to say.

However, the amused laughter that burst so loud in the end, was almost too synchronized, it suddenly made sense that this was actually happening.

"I can't believe we both picked the same card, after all of these years!" Draken wheezed. "Like, I spent almost twenty minutes in the card sections, thinking so hard about what to get and I ended up buying the same thing as you?"

"You tell me, Ken," Mitsuya shook his head, the corner of his lips twitching with amusement. "I picked the farthest convenience store so that I could have a broader choice for the card. And we're pulling out identical cards, like what do I even bother, then?"

But they looked at the card the other gave like they hadn't seen one in their life. The cards were so indistinguishable from one to another, but there were receipts somewhere as the undeniable proofs that they'd been bought separately.

The card could easily be skipped when they roamed the greeting card shelves. It was a simple card with a cartoony green dragon blowing fire and the words, "I'm hot for you!" scribbled next to it.

the greeting card

The card itself wasn't that special, considering this year was the dragon year and there were tons of leftover New Year cards with a dragon theme on them. Also, dragons were always a popular design, that Draken and Mitsuya could easily get more than one before.

But years and years, they never got the same cards.

Not even once.

Not even when they were younger, having a minimal budget and not many choices to choose from.

Years and years, they always managed to get different cards.

And now, they somehow picked identical cards?.

After Draken and Mitsuya tried their best to avoid picking remotely similar design, or worse the same. (Gotta be creative if you've done this tons of times, right?)

Despite everything, they seem to be always in the same frequency, telepathically.

Like it was the Fate performing her magic work, so that The Twin Dragons got literal twinning cards for each other.

"Hey, Taka," Draken grinned, putting their cards next to each other. "Twinsies."

Mitsuya rolled his eyes

"I start to think that being your Twin Dragon is a bad omen."

Draken pouted.

"You can say things like, we're apparently soulmates and all of those romantic, chick-flick things, but you choose to be an ass."

Mitsuya laughed at his antic, before lifting the card that Draken gave him, as he winked. "I mean, this hot ass is literally yours, I don't think I get to choose."

Draken choked on his own spit.
