Gale knew better than to touch him. As much as he wanted to scoop him up into his arms, it would only startle him and could make the situation worse. Astarion had to be the one to make the first move when he was ready, even if the waiting was going to be agonizing.
“Astarion,” he said, as gently as he could, not wanting to alarm him. “I’m here. You’re okay.”
Gale knelt down to get closer to Astarion's level, sitting back on his heels. “He’s not here. He’s not going to hurt you. I won’t let him.”

Astarion’s eyes widen. He could have jumped you then, spilling your innards across the dirt, the shock shaking you down to your core. But there’s a startled look in his eyes, too, like you could push him over with a feather. There’s no recognition there, only—
“You must be mistaken,” Astarion says, waving a hand dismissively. There’s an easy smile on his face that doesn’t quite meet his eyes. “I don’t believe we’ve met."
