Work Text:

Fawnspirit would like to think that his feelings for Honeygaze developed when he saw the other tom during gathings standing tall infront of his clanmate. That it was the way he spoke to Adderstar to keep his clanmate safe, when he was just merely an apprentice. Or maybe it's his mismatched eyes he fell for, never was it meant to be anything more than a crush. Honeygaze was a part of Thunderclan and he was a part of Shadowclan, their medicine cat at that! However that would do little to settle the feelings he felt. He tried very hard to believe he hated the other. He was a Thunderclan warrior of course he hated him it was Shadowclan nature to hate Thunderclan. Yet he couldn't lie to himself much less deny when these feelings grew. Looking back he could say that his feelings for the other tom was that of jealousy over the respect his clanmates held for Honeypaw. He wanted that badly. Yet what changed?

Fawnspirit-or rather Fawnpaw would have a change of heart once the annual games-something that has been apart of clan tradition for seasons now-happened, Fawnpaw was the best tracker out of his fellow apprentices so it's no wonder his mentor wanted him to take part during the tracking game. Honeypaw while he isn't the best tracker in Thunderclan he is smart. This is something that Fawnpaw would learn about Honeypaw later on however. The game itself was to track a vole through different areas which sounds easy until the young cats all see the opening for tunnels. Fawnpaw was never trained to go through tunnels or even how to navigate them, his mentor and others spoke up about it until Honeypaw spoke up about how no one was forcing them to track into the tunnels so why worry. Fawnpaw will never say out loud how badly he wanted to befriend the fluffy tom then, but the game was set to start soon. Once the game started Fawnpaw scented the air to at least get a start but with how many cats were around it was hard, yet as the other apprentices took off Honeypaw was still standing there.

Velvet eyes widen at the other, “Aren't you going to start?” Honeypaw only grins as he sits down. Fawnpaw shakes his head as he thinks quickly where the vole might be hidden.

Fawnpaw rushed closer to the tunnels and started to sniff around, his ears up listening to the other apprentices yowl and growl about being unable to find it. You won't find anything if you keep that up, Fawnpaw thought as he quickly took a look around, seeing where each cat was looking. Different mentors watching on plus warriors but none stood out to him. Yet when he looked back towards where Honeypaw was, well he was still sitting there. His fluffy tail was wrapped neatly around his paws Fawnpaw frowned as Honeypaw was staring right back at him but was giggling.

“What's so funny?” Fawnpaw hissed his fur bristling slightly. Honeypaw only giggled more Fawnpaw huffs as he turned away, he caught a glimpse of a different warrior quickly looking back towards the others. Narrowing his eyes he started to look more closed in what he hoped was the area the warrior was looking at.

“Finally you catch on.” A new voice spoke making Fawnpaw jump rushing to look towards the voice to see Honeypaw, his mix match eyes glowing as he looked at Fawnpaw. Looking back Fawnfang- Fawnspirit will say this is the moment he broke the code once. With a quick shake of his fur to shake the feeling of how hot his own fur felt. Honeypaw only holds back laughter over the way Fawnpaw was acting.

“Seeing as it's only you and me in the running at this point, I'll give you a head start on finding that vole.” Honeypaw said, his fluffy tail swaying slightly. Fawnpaw blinks as doing that would give him the win. He wasn't the best tracker in Shadowclan for nothing now. But with a grin he nods before turning back around and taking off towards where he hoped that warrior looked, all that was there was a tree, lush bushes and a hole. Fawnpaw wouldn't waste his time around the hole or how it was much too obvious to be where the vole is, if it was even hidden there. Instead the tree is where he'll look, with a scent check he was proud to have caught the vole scent now. And with a quick huff he starts to climb up the tree. His tail lashing side to side hard as he fought to balance on the branch he found himself now on. Breathing hard Fawnpaw tries to slow down his breathing to check if the vole scent is closer now.

“Honeypaw found the vole!” Some cat called, and like that it was over and Fawnpaw looked down to see the dark brown tom with dirt all over his pelt and the vole in his mouth, it was in the hole. Fawnpaw pins his ears down as shame ran through him as he climbed back down. He felt his mentor's gaze on his pelt and he could only keep his eyes ahead of him. He didn't want to see how his mentor was looking at him, the shame was already eating at him. A heavy feeling having settled in his belly.

“Honeypaw, that was amazing!”

“Who knew Thunderclan had good trackers?”

“Honeypaw, could you show us how you did it please!”

Fawnpaw wanted nothing more than to shred Honeypaw, why talk to him before when he knew the whole time? Why did he waste time and just draw this all out? It wasn't fair. Yet, why was this so exciting? On one paw he wanted to shred his ears clean off yet the other he wanted to find out how Honeypaw was able to find the vole the way he did.

“All I did was use my nose and it would have been Fawnpaw if he didn't rush searching for the vole.” Honeypaw spoke over all the cats that had gathered, and Fawnpaw stared at Honeypaw with shock. And like that the chatter around them faded into background noise as Fawnpaw felt as if Honeypaw was the only other cat around. Which once more will be another moment he'll look back on fondly, but the young tom here stood with a heavy heart and shame prickled all over. He had to show he could match Honeypaw if not be better than him!

The rest of the games went on, Fawnpaw didn't say another word to Honeypaw besides a meek “good job”. The brown tabby tom kept close to his mentor from there and listened in to whatever the older cats were talking about. He knew all the winners of the games played would be announced soon and with it would be the end, this moment of peace for all the clans would pass. Like leaf bare into new leaf, Fawnpaw however liked leaf bare. If only he could keep living in this then move on.

Fawnspirit is shaken from his memroies when he hears a voice calling for him. With a quick flick of his tail he gives his pelt a quick shake before going to check what was needed of him. Maybe I'll be able to meet with Honeygaze tonight, Fawnspirit thought fondly.
