‘I feel so high school every time I look at you’
Remus looks up from his dinner, just to immediately make direct eye contact with Sirius. Not caring enough to hide his stare, Sirius winks at him and laughs as Remus drops his spoon into his soup.
He shoots the boy a glare as he consciously rubs at his cheeks to try to dispel the bright red blush he knows is showing. It’s clearly not working, so Remus settles for kicking Sirius under the table.
‘I wanna find you in a crowd just to hide from you’
Remus weaves his way through the cheering crowd as he searches for Lily, who said she would save him a seat at the match while he went back to the dorm to grab himself and her scarves. It was surprisingly cold for the end of January, and the chill was creeping in through the rickety stands.
Once he finally sits down, wrapping himself in his scarf, his eyes search subconsciously for Sirius in the air. When he can’t find him, he searches for the other boy on the bench. They catch eyes and Remus ducks behind Lily to avoid another stupid wink that will make him turn a furious pink, and certainly not from the cold.
‘And in a blink of a crinklin’ eye, I’m sinking our fingers entwined. Cheeks pink in the twinklin’ lights, tell me bout the first time you saw me’
Remus throws his head back in laughter as Sirius sighs again.
“No, I said hello first and you ignored me! Then you got annoyed at me for ignoring you, when you did it first!” Remus laughs again as Sirius continues on. He looks at the other boy, his eyes lit up in the dim fairy lights hanging in the girls room. The rest of their friends were somewhere else, and the birthday girl herself was nowhere to be seen.
Weirdly, neither was James.
Remus didn’t notice that though. Not when he was sitting directly across a giggly Sirius, with his eyes full of sparkles as he grabs Remus’ hands to get him to pay attention.
‘I’ll drink what you think and I’m high from smoking your jokes all damn night’
After the quiet calm of Lily’s actual birthday, which had fallen on a Thursday, her ‘proper’ party was the exact opposite. There were lights, strobes, loud music, dancing, and copious amounts of alcohol.
Sirius was not giggling secretly with Remus, but rather loudly proclaiming to anyone who would listen about music taste and why his was the best.
“That’s what I’m saying, not many people can appreciate David Bowie as well as I do!” He pounds his chest as he says this, and lets out a small burp.
“Ok that’s enough lecturing for tonight Pads,” Remus swoops in, smiling apologetically at those Sirius had roped in to listen to his rant. Remus brings Sirius over near the stairs, where Sirius leans against the wall.
“Do you not agree with me Moony?”
“Hm?”
“Do you not think my music taste is unsurpassed?” Sirius bats his eyelashes, smiling innocently up at Remus.
“Someone’s been using their thesaurus.” Remus smiles, avoiding the question.
“You’re avoiding my question! Listen, you just don’t understand that,” Sirius starts, and he continues on his rant as Remus listens, laughing with Sirius at his bad jokes.
They barely noticed that the party was over and they both barely touched the copious amount of alcohol offered, or smoked anything.
‘The brink of a wrinkle in time, bittersweet sixteen suddenly’
The next time they brush up a little too close to each other, they catch each other's eyes as Sirius gasps softly. It goes unnoticed by those around them, but it certainly is not forgotten by either of them.
‘I’m watching American Pie with you on a Saturday night. Your friends are around so be quiet, I’m trying to stifle my sighs.’
When Remus finally opens his eyes, he goes to stand up and crack his back, when he notices Sirius’ head in his lap. The other boy is fast asleep, oblivious to the world around them. He sighs quietly
Peter and James are focused on the TV, watching some show they both love, as well as most of the common room do.
Remus just lets his eyes sink shut again and enjoy the ‘accidental’ intimacy.
‘Are you gonna marry, kiss or kill me? It’s just a game but really, I’m bettin’ on all three for us two.’
“Ok, kiss marry kill… James, Sirius, Remus!” Peter exclaims, looking at Lily as she groans.
“You’re all prats, that’s not fair…” They laugh as she sighs, eyes flicking between the three.
“Ok well, marry Remus, kiss Sirius, and kill James.”
“Ugh, rude!” Sirius says, objecting from his spot between Remus’ legs. He was sitting on the floor, leaning against the other boy's legs as he fiddled with his laces.
“Mate, you got off easy.” James groans as Lily giggles, slapping him lightly.
“Ok Sirius, kiss marry kill… James, Remus, Kingsley.”
Sirius stops to think, his fingers drumming against Remus’ calves.
“Well, it’d be practically incest with James, so kill him, kiss Kingsley and marry Remus.” Sirius looks up at Remus, and they share a small smile between them.
“You’re practically married already, just need a government document honestly.” They both immediately look at James, whose eyes widen as he slowly realises what he just said.
“That was an inside thought, James. Inside thought.” Lily says, sighing as Remus and Sirius shuffle away from each other awkwardly.
‘Get my car door, isn’t that sweet? Then pull me to the back seat. No one’s ever had me, not like you.’
Remus wakes up to the harsh lighting of the hospital wing, and groans as his back cracks as he sits up to stretch. He rubs his eyes, making a mental checklist to ask Pomfrey for water, some salve and cut cream.
When he opens his eyes, Sirius is sitting on a chair next to his bed, smiling. Remus looks at the bedside table, which has water, salve and cut cream.
“Did Pomfrey already come around?” Remus asks, confused.
“Nope, I brought it from the dorms. You were complaining last time that the first thirty minutes after you wake up are the worst, so I figured I’d try to help. Sorry if I overstepped, or something…” Sirius looks up nervously, fiddling with his ring adorned hands.
“No, Sirius, it’s perfect. It’s just”, Remus coughs and clears his throat, “no one’s ever done anything like this before for me.”
Sirius smiles, unusually nervous for the confident boy.
“I also brought chocolate so…” he draws out a big bar of Cabury’s milk chocolate from his deep pocket.
“Well, why didn’t you say that!” Remus smiles, ripping open the bar and popping a square into his mouth.
‘Truth, dare, spin bottles.’
“We need a game, c'mon don’t be boring!” Sirius urges. Only a handful remain from the party, the ‘original’ group as James said. They were all stuffed into the Marauder’s room, with Mary plaiting Marlene's hair, Lily sitting in James’ lap, Peter fiddling with the snitch James had stolen in second year, and Sirius sitting in between Remus’ legs.
“What about spin the bottle?” Mary suggests
“Booooo, I don’t want to snog any of yous,” Sirius says, sighing.
“Truth or dare?” Peter says, and Sirius perks up at the suggestion.
“Ok, Peter ask me first!”
Peter nods, quickly replying back, “Truth or dare?”
“Dare, I’m not a sissy!”
Remus rolls his eyes at Sirius’ dramatics, as does Lily.
“I dare you to…kiss the person here who you find most attractive!” Peter wiggles his eyebrows with the statement, gleeful as Sirius groans.
“Well, it’s not Prongs or his Mrs,” Sirius ducks as Lily throws a pillow at him, “Mary and Marlene are also taken… “
He stops, his eyes flicking between the group. Remus’ eyes widen as he realises exactly what is about to happen. As Sirius turns back towards him, he can already feel the blush creeping up on his cheeks.
“Well, that leaves my brilliant Remus I suppose!” Sirius exclaims, playing up the dramatics as he kisses Remus’ cheek, not unfamiliar to the friendly way Euphemia Potter does when someone enters their house.
Remus rolls his eyes at the gesture, barely concealing his gleeful smile.
He didn’t notice the glances shared between everyone because Sirius winked at him, and he knew then he was gone.
‘You know how to ball, I know Aristotle’
Remus pushes through the crowd, clutching his book as he drops down into the seat next to Peter. The match hasn’t even started yet and already it is overwhelmingly busy.
“You excited, Remus?” Remus looks up, surprised by Peter’s eager tone.
“Well, yes, but is it a particularly important match?” As he looked Peter up and down, he realised the boy was decked out fully in the Gryffindor colours from head to toe. Peter’s eyes widen as he exclaims, “It’s the bloody final Moony!”
The match starts slow, and Remus slowly opens his book as there is practically no action. Sirius is on, but he has barely any job as it is a constant back in forth between the Chasers currently.
Suddenly, the pitch explodes into action. Peter jumps up, and Remus slowly follows suit as the whole crowd is yelling and standing similarly. There seems to be a fight happening between Beaters, and similarly between the Chasers, and…possibly the two Seekers going for the snitch simultaneously.
Nobody else on the pitch notices the match-winning race occurring until it’s nearly over, and they all suddenly separate. The tips of the Slytherin Seeker’s fingers graze the snitch, but in comes the Gryffindor, snatching it out from the air.
Remus is still confused about the rules, but he celebrates anyway. They all rush onto the pitch, Peter seeking ahead for James. As Remus looks around, he is suddenly nearly tackled to the ground.
He manages to keep himself upright, catching Sirius just in time.
“I won, Moony, we won! Did you see it?” Sirius’ eyes sparkle as he smiles, and Remus nods quickly. “You were amazing Pads,” he reassures, smiling similarly.
In all the commotion, he doesn’t remember he’s still holding his book until Sirius grabs it out of his hand.
“What’s this about now? Am I not interesting enough?” Remus smiles, snatching the book back.
“It’s about Greek Philosophers, Aristotle and the like. You’d be dead bored reading it.”
“Aww, you have your books and I have my sports. What a pair we make,” Sirius giggles, punching Remus in the arm.
Remus just nods, ignoring the persistent butterflies in his stomach.
‘Brand new, full throttle. Touch me while your bros play Grand Theft Auto’
Something shifts after the final. Suddenly, the flirty winks held so much more gravity. The little back rubs earned them noticeable side eyes from the others, instead of being ignored.
A few days later, they’re all gathered in the common room. It’s late, so it’s just their group gathered. Mary is painting Marlene’s nails, while James and Pete are arguing over the TV, albeit it only played a handful of channels. Lily is sitting on the couch next to Remus, watching James fondly.
“Oi, why don’t you just play chess? Loser has to go to the kitchens and get us hot chocolate?” Remus suggests, and the pair immediately start, James teasing Peter as he sets up the board.
“Lily, are you stealing our dear Remus? Just after you took James?” Sirius drawls as he enters the common room, coming back late from one of his many detentions.
Lily rolls her eyes as Sirius flops down next to Remus. Her eyes dart between the two, her brows furrowing slightly.
“What?” Sirius asks, arching his brow.
“Nothing, nothing,” She leans back, watching the ongoing chess match.
Remus dismisses it, leaning back as Sirius kicks off his heavy boots. He rubs underneath his eyes, still tired from the last moon. James and Peter have been sucked into the chess match, somewhat evenly matched as James is determined to win.
Remus sighs, dropping his head onto Sirius’ shoulder. He shuts his eyes as Sirius begins to slowly run his hands through Remus’ curly brown hair. It feels weirdly intimate, but Remus dismisses it as he slowly falls asleep.
‘It’s true, swear, scouts honour. You know what you wanted and boy you got her.’
“Remus? Hello? Anyone there?” Remus looks up from his potions notes as Sirius clicks his fingers in front of his face. He attempts a glare at the interruption, but it’s quite ineffective as a smile creeps onto his face.
Sirius just smirks, pulling out the chair across from Remus. His light grey eyes turn warm in the light of the library, his features softening as he looks across at Remus. The eye contact is intense, searing. Remus looks down, twisting his hands together.
“Um, did you want something?” He says, swallowing down the lump in his throat.
“I figured if I didn’t wrench you away from your studies now, your head would explode and I can’t imagine Filch would be happy to clear that up.” Remus rolls his eyes, packing away his stuff into his worn out bag. As he stands, Sirius grabs it from him.
“Why are you trying to be chivalrous? There aren’t a girls nearby for you to impress,” Remus remarks and Sirius laughs nervously, looking away. It was a strange response, usually Sirius would just wiggle his eyebrows or do something equally stupid.
Remus writes off this strange behaviour, following Sirius out of the library. He hadn’t noticed the time slipping away from him, and it was just nearly past curfew. Luckily, the curfew barely applied to the Marauders at this point, as their breaking of it was McGonagall’s smallest issue with them.
“This isn’t the way to the dorm, Sirius.”
“I know it’s not Moony. We’re going somewhere else.”
Remus decides not to question it, dutifully following Sirius through the long corridors and eventually up the winding Astronomy Tower stairs. When they reach the top, Sirius sets down Remus’ bag and leans against the railing. Remus follows, looking out at the dimly lit school grounds.
“Remus…I wasn’t trying to impress a girl back there.” Remus’ eyes flick up, looking at Sirius. The other boy’s eyes don’t move from the sky, steadfastly avoiding eye contact.
“Sorry?”
“I wasn’t trying to impress some girl in the library by taking your bag,” he takes a deep breath before continuing, “I was trying to impress you.”
He finally looked at Remus, his eyes nervously searching the other boy's face. For what, Remus didn’t know.
“Why were you trying to impress me, Pads? Surely that went out the window when you burped in my face in first year right after introducing yourself.”
Sirius laughs nervously, his eyes softening as he holds eye contact with Remus. He takes another deep breath, standing up straight as he clears his throat.
“Ok, let me say this all at once cause if I don’t say it now, I won’t ever say it. So, last couple weeks I’ve realised a couple things and James said that I should tell you because it wasn’t, like, fair or something, I don’t know he’s gone mad soppy because of Lily. So, firstly, I’m like mega gay, like homosexual right here, and I may also fancy you a little bit, but it’s actually quite a lot, and if you don’t feel the same, please tell me so I can hurl myself off this tower right now.”
Sirius looks at Remus, his expression scared. Remus grabs his hand, pulling him in closer as he sees the worry melt off the other boys face.
“Well, I have had some very similar revelations, but I fear I was aware far sooner than I think you were.” Sirius smiles, and Remus realises in that moment, just how soppy and sickeningly in love he is.
“So, you feel the same then?”
Remus decides not to answer that question with words.
‘Brand new, full throttle. You already know babe.’
“Get a room!” Peter yells, and Remus laughs as a sock hits Sirius in the face. Sirius looks up from where he is curled into Remus.
“Did you just throw your fucking sock at me Pettigrew?” He jumps up, running across to Peter as the two chase each other around the dorm. Remus’ birthday party quickly turned from quietly celebrating in the dorm to getting absolutely plastered in the dorm.
“You’re so in love it’s ridiculous,” Lily remarks as she claims Sirius’ spot on the couch. Remus just laughs, watching Sirius tackle Peter to the ground in one fell swipe.
“Fucking look at us, dating two quidditch players.”
“We should be disgusted with ourselves.”
As they watch James pick Sirius off Peter, Lily sighs and drops her head onto his shoulder.
“I suppose someone has to do it though. Without us, they’d run rampage around the castle.”
“I’ll cheers to that!” Remus picks up his glass and Lily knocks hers against it.
“What was that for?” Sirius asks as he walks up, his eyes narrowing in suspicion.
“Nothing, love.” Lily rolls her eyes and subtly moves away from Remus as Sirius grins, quickly getting back into his spot, practically in Remus” lap on the couch.
“Happy?” Remus whispers into Sirius’ ear.
“So happy.”
