It was obvious to his children that General Tilney’s exhaustive barrage of flattery, insinuation, and pecuniary inquires were quite bewildering to the family’s young guest. Eleanor was unable to do more than broach the occasional feminine counterpart with Miss Morland. Henry dared only remain silent when pressed to agree with some fanciful exaggeration of his own standing, which made his sister worry what consequences could befall even such mild resistance.
