Summary:

Maren and Lee talk about the future

Work Text:

Maren can feel the rough patch of grass pricking up her back. But she refuses to move. She was stuck. She takes a deep breath; the sweet aroma of wildflowers in her lungs.

Maybe I’ll move in a minute. She thinks.

Maybe I’ll fade into the wild brush of hills beyond my curled toes.

She’s on the verge of ascending into the universe but a pinkie is holding her down.

A tattooed pinky that had curled around her brown locks.

It’s magnetic.

The way a single touch has a hold on her.

The way she had spent years falling in love with the reds, oranges, and violets of the sunset.

The universe had gifted her with her very own sunset. Reddish brown curls with a captivating shade of green that she can get lost in.

She laughs. Causing the pinkie to move, to the curve of her neck. She turns on her side, gently hiding her face on the quilted blanket that had been laid down.

It’s strange to be acting shy but she can’t help it. She feels Lee reach through the tall grass, his warm hand pressing against her cheek. She presses a long kiss to his palm before scooting closer. Lee runs a hand over her lip, gently rubbing circles over her chin.

“What are you thinking about?” Maren asks, watching as Lee rolls onto his back. His hair is ruffled by the wind.

“Nothing.”

“I like this,” Maren says after a while.

Lee hums before saying, “Me too.”

“You think, Maren says, we have more of this?.”

Lee shrugs.

“More of what?.” Lee asks, a small smirk forming on his face. She rolls her eyes fondly.

“Being normal.”

He shrugs, “You think we can?”

Maren rolls over on top of Lee and straddles his waist.

Lee places his hands on her waist, gently rubbing her circles into her skin.

“You’ve never tried?.” Maren asks, she leans forward her curls caressing the side of his face. Lee had stayed in a few places and worked in a few motels, and a few diners but nothing had ever stuck.

“I don’t stay in places too long.” He answers, running his hand along the grass.

“We can try,” Maren says, brushing the curls from his forehead and kissing his brow. He sits up a bit, their noses brush. She can feel his hands run along her back. The sun is setting as she lays down on top of his chest. She runs her fingers along his chest, he grabs her hand and interwoven their fingers.

“We can do it you know, Maren says,

Lee is quiet for a moment, she can hear the gears turning in his head. He looks at her, he squints at her before he gives her a wide smile.

“What?”

“Where does all that hope come from”. Lee asks, before tapping her nose.

She brushes his finger away.

She shrugs at his question,

“I don’t know but you need some.”

Lee huffs, a sly grin on his face.

“Oh do I,” Lee says, Maren nods.

“You think we can do it, huh.”

“It wouldn’t hurt, we could find a place and shop, buy some cute furniture, plants” She sighs, “We can have a place that’s just ours.”

“What if it doesn’t work?” She looks at Lee, she gives him a sideways glance,

“Then I deserve a big helping of I told you so.” She kisses his neck softly, “But don’t worry, starting tomorrow things will be different okay.”

Lee hums in response, she can feel him press a kiss to her long locks. She’s the most stubborn person he has ever met. But he was willing to try. It doesn’t hurt to try.

“Starting tomorrow.” Lee murmurs and feels Maren’s grip on him tighten.

“Starting tomorrow.”
