Work Text:
Enid looked between two outfits, trying to decide which one she wanted to wear out that night. It was June of her senior year, the very last week of school. To celebrate, Yoko and Divina were holding a pride party in their room. Enid was beyond excited when they told her. She had only been out for a year, having discovered that she was indeed a lesbian about halfway through junior year.
After throwing herself into boy after boy, she’d finally realized that there was a reason none of them lasted. And she also finally figured out the reason her claws always extended every time she had kissed one of them. Turns out her inner werewolf knew something that she didn’t: the major crush she had on her roommate.
She’d been harboring feelings for Wednesday since sophomore year, having developed them relatively quickly after meeting the girl. She couldn’t be blamed, though. Wednesday was breathtaking in every way. Absolutely gorgeous, and a stubborn but loyal friend who cared about people and did whatever she could to help others. She was selfless, no matter how much she tried to deny it.
The two of them had been on countless adventures since sophomore year, and in every single one Wednesday proved herself to be a confident and kind human being. A brooding goth who, deep down, cared. She was exactly Enid’s type, threats and all.
Enid shook her head, tapping her chin as she debated between the two outfits. Her pink, orange, and white sweatshirt - of course - but she was trying to decide between a pair of white shorts or her white floral skirt.
Ultimately she went for the long shorts. They went almost all the way down to her knees, and she figured that staying within the lesbian colors would be the best idea for a pride party. She quickly changed out of her school uniform and into her outfit. Once she finished, she looked around for her converse. As she got down to search under her bed, the door opened. She looked up, a smile immediately forming on her face.
There in the doorway stood Wednesday Addams, her roommate who she happened to have a major crush on.
Enid abandoned the search for her shoes, standing up and bounding over to Wednesday. “Howdy roomie!” She beamed, outstretching her arms for a possible hug. Sometimes Wednesday was okay with it, sometimes she wasn’t. No matter what, Enid never pushed. It’s just that Enid loved physical contact.
This time, Wednesday reciprocated, almost slumping into Enid’s arms. Enid hummed. “Rough day?” She asked. Wednesday gave her a nod. Enid had been able to pick up on some of her habits as the two of them grew closer. Like the fact that Wednesday often preferred to go nonverbal when she had a stressful day. Having a conversation was a lot of effort for the raven at times. Enid was always happy to oblige. She pulled away from Wednesday, holding the girl by her shoulders. “Look. I know you might not want to because your day was rough, but I just have to ask. Yoko and Divina are holding a pride party tonight, and I wanted to ask if you’d like to come with me?”
“A pride party?” Wednesday pulled away from Enid, moving to place her backpack down next to the foot of her bed and settle down at her desk. “You mean one of those horrifying social gatherings that’s accentuated by rainbows?”
Enid raised an eyebrow and pursed her lips. “Yes, Wednesday. One of those ‘mortifying social gatherings’.” She let an easy smile play on her lips. After all, she hadn’t been able to clock Wednesday as anyone particularly interested in romance after Tyler had betrayed her. Maybe this could be the gateway for something finally happening between the two of them. “Come on, Wednesday. It’s our friends. They’d want you to be there! And don’t you want to celebrate?”
Wednesday turned in her chair so she could see Enid, an unamused expression on her face. “I don’t see the point. Why celebrate who you love? It’s just another part of you.”
“A beautiful part of you!” Enid chirped, holding her hands together and to her chest excitedly. “Love is such a beautiful thing, Wednesday. How could anyone not celebrate it?”
Wednesday hummed. “Love is being vulnerable.”
“Maybe being vulnerable isn’t such a bad thing.” Enid tilted her head, smiling sweetly at Wednesday. She could have sworn that she caught a blush tinting Wednesday’s cheeks, but before she could call the raven out on it the girl hurriedly turned to face her typewriter.
“When is this party?” She settled her hands on the keys, no doubt about to begin her daily hour of writing that she had been so faithful to since they’d met in sophomore.
“Half an hour, in Yoko’s dorm.” Enid turned back to her bed, suddenly remembering that she had been looking for her shoes.
Wednesday clicked her tongue. “That’ll cut into my writing time.”
“Please Wednesday?” Enid asked, drawing out the vowels of the words. “You can’t miss your writing just once? It’ll be fun, I promise.”
Wednesday froze, the clacking going silent. Enid could then hear a small sigh. “Alright. I’ll accompany you to this ridiculous rally of yours.”
“It’s a party, Wednesday.” Enid said playfully, finding her shoes tucked under her bed. She pulled them out, then put them on her feet, tying them. When she looked up, Wednesday was already trying to find something to wear. “If you’re open to it, a splash of color for pride might be nice. Maybe…” Enid thought for a moment, then an idea crossed her mind. “Oh! I know!”
She ran over to her desk and rustled through it, trying to find the friendship bracelets that she had made and religiously worn for years. By the time she found them, Wednesday had already finished changing into a white and black checkered vest over a black long-sleeved button up and black pants. Enid flushed upon seeing her roommate, and quickly turned back to the bracelets, trying to find an acceptable option for Wednesday.
Enid laid eyes on a bracelet that was made of deep purples, blues, and black. “This is perfect for you.” Enid skipped over to Wednesday, handing her the bracelet. After Wednesday examined it with approval in her eyes, Enid quickly revealed that she had one of her own, made of oranges, pinks, and white. “We can match!” She exclaimed, a callback to the snoods that she had made the two of them back in sophomore year. She slipped the bracelet onto her wrist, excitement rushing through her when Wednesday did the same. She then held her wrist up to Wednesday’s. “Perfect!” She squealed, quickly bounding over to the door.
Wednesday looked surprised. “Didn’t you say the party started in half an hour?”
Enid nodded. “I’m going to head over early to see if they need help setting anything up.” Enid held her hands behind her back, rocking forward slightly. “Do you… want to come with?”
Wednesday glanced at her typewriter forlornly, then huffed a small sigh. “Alright, come on.” She walked over to Enid, opening the door for the werewolf.
“Awww, you’re so cute.” Enid grinned, skipping through the door. Wednesday followed, and the two of them walked over to Yoko’s dorm. It was a short walk, seeing as Yoko was in the same hall as the two of them. But they were attached at the hip for the entirety of it, just as they always were. When the two of them walked anywhere together, they were less than three inches apart at all times. Enid knew that Wednesday walked closely to her partly to stay as far away as she could from the other students, but Enid still took pride in being the only one Wednesday wanted to be around.
Enid knocked on Yoko’s door once the two of them made it to the dorm. They could hear shuffling from the inside, before Yoko opened it, looking slightly disheveled. Divina was in the back, giggling softly. “Yo! You’re here early! Really nailed the lesbian look too.” Yoko said with a smile full of fangs. Her eyes then landed on Wednesday. “Holy shit! You got the emo to come too? That’s crazy, E, you must have some insane persuasion skills.”
“Wednesday’s here?” The two could hear Divina call from inside the room.
Yoko opened the door wider, and the two of them walked in, glancing around at the decorations. It wasn’t much; a few streamers attached to the ceiling, rainbow flags connected by a string hung over the doorway. Enid knew that Wednesday would appreciate the few decorations. If there was one thing Wednesday hated about pride, it was the amount of color that came with it.
“You guys are super early, but it’s alright. I guess we can get the party started now.” Yoko walked over to her desk, connecting her phone to a bluetooth speaker and turning on some music.
“We wanted to see if you guys needed help setting anything up.” Enid watched as Wednesday made her way over to Divina. The two had gotten well acquainted since Yoko and Enid were best friends and often a chaotic duo. They called themselves “babysitters” and often lamented about the disarray that constantly occurred whenever the pair was together.
While Wednesday and Divina struck up a friendly conversation, Yoko pulled Enid to the side. “Enid, is today the day?” She asked, her voice hushed.
Enid shot a glance over at Wednesday, who thankfully wasn’t paying attention to the two of them. “I’m not sure about this Yoko, I really don’t know if she likes me back. I mean, she doesn’t seem interested in romance at all- and for good reason, after Tyler.”
Yoko hummed, nodding her head. Her eyebrows were furrowed. She was deep in concentration, trying to use the one brain cell that was shared between the two of them. “True, true. But consider this… You’re nothing like Tyler, dude. You’re a kickass werewolf who beat his ass!” She patted Enid on the back. “Seriously. If she’d like anyone, it would be you. Trust me.”
“And if it goes badly?” Enid asked nervously, her voice shaking slightly.
“It won’t! Worst she can say is no.” Yoko shrugged. “Then the two of you just go back to normal and things are at worst a bit awkward until you lose your feelings for her.”
Enid clenched her jaw, shooting a look at Wednesday from across the room. She was busily detailing the evidence of her newest case to Divina, who looked intrigued, but slightly scared. Enid’s eyes softened as she watched Wednesday talk about something she was interested in. Her roommate always went onto tangents, and Enid couldn’t help but admire her grit and her determination to solve these cases she found herself in the middle of. Even though the two of them had more than one close call in the past couple years.
“Dude.” Yoko raised an eyebrow, watching as Enid stared lovingly at the short psychopath across the room. “You are so down bad. Tell her.”
“Ugh! Fine, Yoks. Not right now though, I’ll tell her later.” Enid pushed Yoko away from her playfully. She caught Wednesday glancing in their direction, a flicker of something akin to frustration crossing over her expression. Enid blinked, the two of them making eye contact. Wednesday quickly averted her gaze, focusing back on Divina.
Enid blinked. What was that? Frustration? Did she annoy Wednesday? Was her and Yoko talking annoying her? The notion was totally impossible to Enid, but was Wednesday perhaps jealous?
Enid decided that it didn’t matter. Her and Yoko walked over to Wednesday and Divina to join the two of them as they talked. Wednesday caught Yoko up on everything that had been happening recently. The investigations that her and Enid had gone on, the dangers that they had faced. She also went into extensive detail about all the times Enid had saved her life. She had a proud expression on her face as she explained the countless times Enid had put herself into danger for Wednesday.
Enid flushed, waving Wednesday off nonchalantly. “Wednesday, you’re being too kind. It’s not that impressive.”
Wednesday made direct eye contact with Enid. “On the contrary, every single time you’ve laid your life on the line for me, it’s been the most impressive thing I have ever seen.”
Her gaze was so intense, Enid could feel heat rising to her cheeks. “Uh…” She mumbled, fumbling for something to say in response. She looked to Yoko for help, who was watching her with an amused expression that told her the vampire was totally content to watch her continue to struggle.
Just as the silence became awkward, Bianca burst into the dorm, Ajax, Xavier, and Kent in tow. “The party’s arrived!” Bianca shouted, eyes moving between the four of them and finally landing on Enid. “You look like a tomato, Enid. What did Wednesday say this time?”
“What’s that supposed to mean?!” Enid squeaked, shooting a glance at Wednesday, who looked utterly lost.
“Yes, Barclay. What did that question mean?” Wednesday glared daggers at Bianca.
Enid couldn’t tell if it was because Wednesday understood the innuendo and hated the idea of saying anything romantic to Enid, or because whatever Bianca had said clearly distressed Enid and Wednesday thought it was unacceptable. All she could do was pray that it was the second option.
Bianca raised her hands in surrender. “Woah, relax, emo. It didn’t mean anything.” She glanced at Yoko’s phone, turning up the volume. “Come on, let’s get this party started!” She winked at Enid, before moving to join Divina.
Xavier, of course, walked over to Wednesday, immediately initiating an awkward conversation with her. Xavier had been holding on to a crush that he’d had on Wednesday since they met. He refused to admit he had no chance with her, no matter what anyone else said. Enid could understand. After all, at least he had the advantage of having a similar dreary demeanor to Wednesday. Enid was the total opposite of her, sunshine, rainbows, and all.
Ajax made his way over to Enid. The two of them had dated for a short period of time in sophomore year, then she broke up with him once she found out about her feelings for Wednesday. They ended on good terms though, and were great friends.
“Enid! It’s so good to see you!” The two of them hugged, and Enid beamed up at Ajax. “It’s cool that you brought Wednesday too.” He glanced over at Wednesday, who looked to be heading over to Bianca with Xavier trailing behind her. “Are you finally gonna tell her how you feel?”
Enid groaned. “Not you, too.” She sighed, looking up at Ajax. “Listen, I’ll do it today, at some point, I swear.”
Ajax raised his hands jokingly. “Hey man, I’m just saying what we’re all thinking.”
“I know, I know-” Enid jokingly bumped him with her shoulder as she watched Wednesday attempt to escape Xavier through Bianca. “Maybe I should go help her out.” She made a beeline for Wednesday, smiling at Ajax over her shoulder. He waved at her, just as Kent walked up to him and started a conversation.
“Bestie!” She exclaimed as she walked up to Wednesday, hooking her arm with Wednesday’s. The amount of physical touch the raven was okay with had increased exponentially over the years. And though Wednesday acted as though she merely tolerated it, Enid just knew somehow that deep down, Wednesday liked the affection Enid showed her at least a little bit. “I missed you.”
“We’ve been in the same room, Enid. The last time we spoke was about ten minutes ago.” Wednesday had her usual look of disdain on her face, but Enid thought she spotted a hint of red tinting her cheeks.
“I know! But we haven’t been talking.” Enid accentuated her words with a pout. She glanced over at Yoko, who was watching the two of them intently. Yoko nodded, then gestured towards the door. Most of the people were hanging out in the middle of the dorm, so there was a quiet corner the two of them could go to by the door.
She glanced back at Wednesday, then pulled the girl away from the rest of the group and towards the door. Wednesday stumbled, but quickly regained her footing and walked along with the werewolf. The confusion in her expression was evident. “Enid? Where are we going? You’re the one who dragged me out of my chair and over to this disgusting social event, so why are we leaving?”
“We aren’t leaving-” Enid pulled Wednesday over to the door, then sighed, slipping her arm out from around Wednesday’s. “Look, Wednesday, there’s something I need to tell you.” Her gaze turned to the others, though she was trying not to think about the fact that their friends were probably stealing glances at them.
“What is it? Do you have a lead on one of the cases we’re investigating?” Wednesday lowered her voice, glancing over at their friends suspiciously after Enid had. “Does one of our friends know something? I saw you speaking to Yoko and Ajax. Though I’d be very surprised if either of them knew anything. They share a collective brain cell and it’s never in use.”
“Wednesday!” Enid chided. “Be nice. And no, that’s not what I need to talk to you about. I…” She trailed off, beads of sweat forming on her forehead. All of a sudden, it felt like the room’s temperature had increased about ten degrees. She nervously tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. “I just… I wanted to tell you…”
Her voice seemed to die in her throat. Wednesday stared at her, her eyes flickering over Enid’s features as she tried to decipher what Enid was struggling with. Her voice softened when she spoke next. “What exactly is it? You’re sweating, Enid. Why are you so nervous? It’s only me.”
The near-frantic reassurance from her roommate had Enid feeling a bout of guilt. Over the years, Wednesday had become closely acquainted with Enid and her mannerisms. Enid knew that it made Wednesday nervous whenever she acted outside of the behaviors Wednesday had come to associate with her.
“Wednesday, I just…” Enid gritted her teeth for a moment, trying to steel herself for what might happen after she revealed what had been on her mind. “I have feelings for you!” She blurted out, her voice a whispered yell. “Like, romantic feelings. And I have for years, but I never said anything because I didn’t think you’d want anything after Tyler and I didn’t want to ruin our friendship-”
“Enid-” Wednesday tried to interject after a stunned silence, but she was abruptly cut off.
“-And I really, really, really, don’t want this to ruin what we have right now because I’m totally fine with it! Really, I am, I just want you in my life! We don’t have to do anything you don’t want to at all, like I’m totally cool with whatever-”
“Enid.” Wednesday finally managed to get Enid’s attention when she placed her hands on Enid’s shoulders, trying to ground the poor werewolf. Once she got the attention that she had so desperately sought, though, she shrunk nervously. Love and feelings was something that Wednesday had little to no experience in.
Enid knew that. And if she had known that confessing her feelings would make Wednesday feel unsure of herself in any way, she wouldn’t have done it. “Oh, my God, Wednesday I’m so sorry!” She started apologizing, but immediately quieted when Wednesday’s hands tightened their grip on her shoulders.
“Hush for a moment, you dense wolf.” Wednesday practically hissed, though her words lacked any bite. She then huffed out a small sigh as Enid watched her, wide-eyed. “I… Have little expertise in this area. Your confession is confusing, but not unwelcome.” The raven averted her gaze, staring at the door. “I must admit, I have been grappling with unknown feelings towards you. I was unsure of what they were. It seemed my body involuntarily caused certain reactions every time you’ve touched me or done anything particularly stupid recently.”
Enid stared at Wednesday, her jaw slightly ajar. She definitely hadn’t been expecting Wednesday to admit that she’d been having feelings for Enid as well. “Wha..?” Enid mumbled, her brain blanking. What was she supposed to say? How was she supposed to react?
“Did you process any of that? Or was it in one ear and out the other?” Wednesday shook her head. “It seems there’s really only one way for me to get this through to you. May I kiss you, Enid?”
Enid’s jaw dropped further. Did she just hear that correctly? Did Wednesday just ask to kiss her? “But our friends-” She mumbled half-heartedly.
“I don’t care.” Wednesday quickly waved the words away.
Enid was shocked. It was so unlike Wednesday to not care about PDA, and Enid would think that would only double when it came to something romantic. She nodded though, and got less than a second to prepare herself. Because the next thing she knew, Wednesday’s hands were gingerly holding her face and she was pulling Enid down to meet her.
Enid kissed Wednesday softly, nervously. She was afraid that this was some type of dream that she was going to wake up from any moment. How could this be real? She was kissing the girl that she had a major crush on. That she’d been crushing on for almost two years.
Wednesday pulled her closer, one of her arms wrapping around Enid’s neck. She deepened the kiss, encouraging and reassuring Enid simultaneously. Enid’s hands almost instinctively found their place at Wednesday’s waist. They slid to the small of the raven’s back, pulling her closer.
When they separated, Enid looked into Wednesday’s eyes for a moment, a huge smile forming on her face. She glanced over at her friends, who were all watching them in shocked silence.
Yoko was the first to say something. “Yes!!” She pumped a fist into the air. “You all owe me five bucks!”
“And me!” Ajax piped up, grinning at the two of them.
“You guys were betting on us?!” Enid immediately asked, her arms still embracing Wednesday.
Wednesday planted her hands on Enid’s collarbones, pushing her slightly as she turned to their friends, a withering glare on her face. “How about we bet on which one of you I will kill first?”
Enid quickly tightened her arms around Wednesday, holding her back. “Wends!”
Yoko simply laughed, unbothered by Wednesday’s threat. “See, Div! I told you the pride flags were a good idea. It’s basically mistletoe for gay people.”
Wednesday and Enid both glanced up, having forgotten completely about the line of flags hanging above the door. “Oh for hell’s sake.” Wednesday groaned, still struggling in Enid’s arms. “Let me stake her, Enid-”
“I didn’t even know you were into girls.” Xavier said, his expression one of disappointment.
“I am attracted to Enid. Not girls in general.” Wednesday corrected Xavier. “And certainly not you.”
Bianca hummed. “So she’s Enidsexual. Makes sense.” She rested a hand on her hip, watching Wednesday with a small smirk on her face. “We aren’t making fun of you, Wednesday. We’ve all been waiting for this to happen. Glad you guys finally got your weird homoerotic friendship stuff sorted.”
Wednesday went limp in Enid’s arms, glancing up at her. “Can we go back to the dorm?” She requested, irritated by their friends' comments.
“Oh, come on, let’s hang around for another half hour or so, alright? Enid asked, pouting.
Enid knew that Wednesday wouldn’t be able to resist her asking to spend time with their friends. She’d never been able to, even back when the two of them had first met.
“Fine.” Wednesday snapped. There was little aggression in her words.
Once Enid was sure that Wednesday was no longer thinking of skinning any of their friends alive, she let Wednesday go, and the two of them rejoined the group.
They ended up staying well past half an hour, getting carried away talking to their friends. They floated around, taking turns talking to different people, and every time Enid stole a glance at Wednesday, she would catch her raven doing the same. They’d make eye contact and a blush would tint their cheeks, a knowing look in their eyes.
Enid wasn’t sure how their relationship would evolve now that the two of them had confessed their feelings and even shared a kiss. But she knew that whatever happened, the two of them would face it together. And not only that, she also knew that their friends would support the two of them through anything they struggled with, including relationships.
And honestly, that was enough for Enid to know everything would be okay.
