Work Text:
Everything happened insanely fast. That’s the only way to describe it.
One minute class A was watching the big screens as Yaoyorouz and her team took on Kendou and some members from class B during the class 1a vs 1 b exercise; the next thing anyone knew Yaomomo was unconscious and Kaminari was struggling to hold Jiro back from running into the arena and attacking Kendou.
To say that complete chaos erupted the moment Momo passed out would be an understatement. While all of class 1A was upset about the damage done to their friend, there was one person in particular who was out for blood.

Jiro jerked awake and ripped the blankets from her body. She pressed a hand to her chest in an attempt to slow her racing heart. The air was thick with the scent of her fear and worry due to her bad dream. She tried desperately to rid the images from her mind but it was proving difficult and she was not able to calm herself down. Jiro sighed and swung her legs out. Maybe a cold glass of water will help me , she thought to herself as she stood up from bed preparing to head down to the kitchen.
The purple-haired girl was just about to reach for the door handle when a loud banging on her door made her freeze. Normally this wouldn’t have bothered her but ever since she’d presented as omega, Jiro often found herself a little more skittish than she’d been before. Was she actually afraid of what might wait on the other side of her door? No, not really. First of all, she was a pro-hero in training; she may be small but she was not helpless. Reason 2, she was in a building full of soon-to-be pro heroes, most if not all of them, would be willing to come to her aid if she called out for help. And 3rd, she was mated to a very powerful alpha that she knew would stop at nothing to protect her. So no, she wasn’t worried. If anything, judging by the time of night and the events that led to this moment, Jiro was fairly certain that it was her alpha who was at the door.
She took a deep breath and opened the door a crack - that was all the invitation her mate needed to storm into her bedroom, clearly tensed for a fight.
“Uh, Momo, what’s up?”
“I could smell your fear from my room, Kyouka. What is going on? Has someone done something to you?” Momo demanded more than asked (growling a little at that last question).
Jiro wanted to smack herself. She had allowed her overactive imagination to snap the control she normally had on her emotions and now they were affecting her mate. She immediately began to emit a soothing scent while also stepping into Momo’s space. Jiro carefully brought her hands to the taller girl's cheeks and smiled.
“Hey, no babe, I’m fine. There’s no danger here. No need for you to go into alpha mode.” Jiro hoped that the joke would help to calm her lover.
There was nothing worse than a pissed-off alpha trying to protect their omega. Jiro knew from first-hand experience just how dangerous Momo could be if provoked. And she wasn’t particularly thrilled by the idea of having to explain what the fuck was going on to Mr. Aizawa if Momo went into a rage for no reason. The taller girl scanned her girlfriend up and down, squinting her eyes, trying to see for herself that her mate was okay.
“Kyoka, darling. What is wrong? If there is no danger then why do you smell so strongly of fear.” Momo finally asked.
Jiro flushed slightly, embarrassed to admit the truth, and tapped the ends of her jacks together.
“I-it’s nothing. It’s stupid. I’m sorry for worrying you. You can go back to bed now. I’m okay.” She tried to give the alpha a reassuring smile.
+++++
Momo tilted her head to the side as she studied her omega. She hoped that if she stared at Kyoka long enough, the smaller girl would eventually cave and confess what was bothering her. Because Momo was 100 percent certain that something was indeed bothering her mate. It was already past 5 am and everyone in Heights Alliance was asleep. Momo herself had been in a deep slumber, dreaming about her time with Kyoka on Nabu Island and fantasizing about being able to connect with her again on such a deep, physical level. It had been over a month since their return and she was already craving the reconnection and the feeling of being so close to the woman she loved. Midway through her dream, right as Kyoka should have been moaning in pleasure and filling the room with her sweet scent, Momo’s nose registered something strange. It was Kyoka’s scent alright, but it was all wrong. There was no happiness, desire, or pleasure - her girlfriend was afraid and the scent of that fear jolted Momo wide awake.
She’d barely had the frame of mind to put on her robe before she threw open her bedroom door and stalked down the two floors that separated her and her beloved. She was too impatient to wait for the elevator nor did she create anything to aid her - she simply ran and summoned her alpha powers to carry her to her omega in record time. Once there, with Kyoka’s scent much more prominent, Momo’s eyes began to glow; the alpha rage threatening to take over as thoughts of someone being stupid enough to touch or harm her mate began to bombard her mind. She managed to keep some of her facilities though, enough to knock on the door rather than tare it off its hinges.
When Kyoka opened the door, her scent hit Momo like a freight train. The fear was so strong that Momo’s instincts took over - her duty was to protect what was hers. So she’d barged into Kyoka’s room, ready to eliminate whatever threatened her mate; only the room was empty save for an anxious-looking Kyoka. Well, that gave Momo pause, it was not enough to bring her back to herself, she had to be certain that Kyoka was all right. So she’d asked and the response she’d received had both calmed and confused her.
“Kyoka, angel, you are not stupid and neither are your feelings,” she declared as she pulled the punk girl into her arms. “Please just tell me what is the matter.”
Momo hoped that her mate would feel comfortable enough to explain herself by using a calming tone and letting out a relaxing scent. After a few moments, the alpha felt her omega start to melt into her embrace. She smiled and held her girlfriend a little tighter.
“Momo, I’m sorry.”
It was only then that Momo felt the wetness on her neck and shirt. She’s crying?!!! Oh, man. Whatever happened, it must have been bad. I’ll kill anyone who harmed her - friend or foe. No one touches what is mine!
“My love,” Momo picked Kyoka up and carried her bridal style to the bed where she sat down with the older girl in her arms. “I promise that everything will be alright. I am here for you, I will take care of you,” She paused to push some of Kyoka’s hair out of her face and stared longingly into the deep violet eyes she adored so much. “I love you. Just tell me what is wrong and I’ll make it better.”
+++++
Jiro gasped softly when she heard Momo’s declaration. It wasn’t the first time that either of them had said those 3 words but it still made her heart race whenever Momo said it. She could feel her heart swell and more tears fall down her face and she registered how happy those words made her feel. She was so thankful to be mated to such a kind and strong alpha like Yaoyorozu Momo - the prettiest woman Jiro had ever seen, from a well-off family, and a powerful quirk. Momo was the whole package and Jiro still had trouble believing that the class VP had chosen HER of all people to mate and love.
Which was why she was having such a difficult time explaining to the raven-haired beauty why she was such a wreck right now. But Momo did not rush her - she merely continued to whisper sweet nothings knowing that Jiro’s sensitive jacks would pick up every word she was saying while also rubbing small circles on her back. After savoring the TLC for a few minutes, Jiro finally decided to bite the bullet and spill her guts. If Momo was angry with her afterward, then she was willing to do whatever her alpha wanted in order to make it up to her.
Jiro took a deep breath and said, “I had a nightmare.”
The hands on her back paused.
“A nightmare?” Momo sounded confused.
“Yes!” Jiro squeaked out.
“Um…what was this nightmare about?”
The older girl shook her head violently. No way was she going to embarrass herself even more.
She let out a little squeak and bit her bottom lip when she felt a hand on her chin, stopping her head movement, and forcing her gaze up to meet the creation heroes.
“Tell me.”
Jiro felt a shiver run down her body. It wasn’t often that Momo would use her alpha powers on Jiro. She never tried to order her around or make her feel like a lesser lifeform - BUT! There were moments when Momo’s gaze hardened and she spoke/acted in a very dominant way. Was it her flexing her alpha powers and the control she had over Jiro as the alpha to her omega? Maybe. Or did Momo just have a dom side that Jiro wasn't privy to until after they’d gotten together? Definitely. Hell, it could have even been a combination of the two - all Jiro knew was that 1) she was unable to deny Momo whenever she got like this and 2) it was hot as fuck!
The hearing hero cleared her throat. “Oh…um…I dreamt that you got hurt. Like, really hurt and I lost you. And I- I can’t bear to lose you Momo. I just found you and I love you so much. I don’t know what I would do without you.” She was crying again by the time she’d finished.
+++++
Momo was at a loss for words. When she’d heard that Kyoka had had a nightmare she was expecting her mate to confess to dreaming about the gas attack that happened during the training camp or any of the other traumatic experiences that class 1 A had been subject to since the school year began. It was only logical for someone to experience moments of PTSD from all of their deadly situations. She had no idea that Kyoka was so distressed over Momo’s possible death (and the love confession just made her whole day brighter!).
She was not entirely sure how to go about comforting her mate. While Momo wasn’t thrilled imagining her own eventual passing, she also knew that it was inevitable. She was going to die at some point - probably sooner than most due to her chosen profession- but so was everyone else. Momo chose instead to try to live each day as if it were her last; to enjoy the little things and to try to avoid having any regrets. She felt that it was a decent motto to live by but was unsure how to convince Kyoka to see things from her perspective.
Still unsure of what to say or do after a few moments of silence between the two, Momo felt Kyoka start to stir in her embrace.
“See, I told you it was stupid. I’m sorry. I'm sorry for waking you and wasting your time. You should try to go back to sleep.” Kyoka declared while trying to break free of her mate's hold.
Momo just tightened her arms to prevent her love from escaping. They needed to talk about this because Momo refused to allow these thoughts to continue to eat away at her lover.
“Uh, Momo, let me go!” Kyoka growled out in a way that she probably meant to sound threatening but all Momo could do was smirk at the adorableness. She loved it when Kyoka let out one of her little growls.
“No, princess. We need to discuss this dream of yours and find a way to help you cope so that you may rest peacefully at night.” Momo replied calmly, planting a kiss on the purple-haired girl's forehead.
Kyoka let out a long-suffering sigh (which again amused Momo) before she relaxed back into the embrace. Momo took that opportunity to lay them down to where she had the smaller girl’s back pressed against her front. Kyoka made the perfect little spoon!
Momo took a deep breath and spoke her mind.
“Darling, I won’t lie to you, I am going to die one day. We all are. Now I pray that my passing comes before yours because I know I could not control myself if anyone were to take you from me nor do I want to witness you going without me in general. But let me assure you of this: No matter what becomes of me, you will never truly lose me. I am yours, just as you are mine. We are mated, we are connected in a way that goes beyond this lifetime. You owe my heart and soul and so, should anything happen to me, you can rest assured knowing that I can be found in your heart and in the clouds above, watching and waiting for you to join me, beloved. Because I do not want anyone but you Kyoka Jiro.”

It was in times like these, when Jiro was a weeping mess that she knew anyone (besides Momo) who saw her would have a hard time thinking of her as the sarcastic, aloof, punk rock chick of class 1 A. The times when Momo was just so damn sweet and said exactly what she needed to hear and turned her into nothing but a puddle. God I fucking love her so much!
She allowed herself some time to bask in Momo’s words and allow them to penetrate her mind, and calm her thoughts. Before she turned around until they were face to face.
“I love you, Momo.”
Momo blushed at her words.
“I love you too, Kyoka,” She smiled so beautifully that it nearly took Jiro’s breath away. “Now, we should probably go back to bed. We have to be up in an hour for class.”
Jiro turned her head to look at her bedside clock and was surprised to see that it was a few minutes after 6. She was tired, sure, she’d barely gotten any sleep the night before so she really should take Momo’s suggestion and go to bed - but…there was still a nagging feeling in the back of her mind that was telling her that something was off and she needed Momo’s help to chase that nagging feeling away.
“We could go to sleep, that’s true,” She paused for dramatic effect as she quickly flipped the alpha onto her back and climbed on top of her. She leaned down and whispered suggestively. “Or, we could use this last hour in other ways.” She made her intentions clear by biting Momo’s earlobe.
Jiro was delighted when she felt her alpha respond quickly and positively to her suggestion. She bit her lip and smirked down at her lover.
“I’ll take that as a yes.” She teased before she connected their lips for a scorching kiss.

7 hours later
+++++
“Time for combat training! This will be a battle between Class A and Class B.”
Jiro’s heart started pounding when she heard that. All day, she’d had this annoying feeling - like something wasn’t quite right or like something was going to go wrong today - and no matter how amazing her time with Momo had been that morning or how long and boring her classes were she couldn’t seem to fully shake the feeling away. And now that they were here, at Field Gamma, preparing to battle it out with their rival class the feeling had only grown stronger.
She tuned out Bakugo and his ranting about how “he was going to win this without their help” (their = Jiro, Sero, and Sato) and “how they should just stay out of his way”; she rolled her eyes and looked towards Momo. Her mate looked good in her upgraded winter costume - the cape had been added for warmth but Jiro just appreciated how it blocked Momo’s body from view. She did not like other people looking at her girlfriend goddamit. She was relieved to see that her girl looked calm and in control as she spoke to her teammates (Tokoyami, Aoyama, and Hagakure), possibly coming up with a plan on how to take down their opponents.
The omega was comforted by the knowledge that her alpha was okay but the idea of her going against Kendou - someone Jiro knew Momo had a complicated frienemy relationship with - made that feeling of doom stronger. She found herself holding her breath as Momo and Kendou spoke to each other as they made their way onto the field. Thanks to her advanced hearing, she could make out every word, and the not-so-subtle threat that Kendou directed at Momo had her hackles raised.
This isn’t going to end well she thought to herself, miserably.
“Hell yeah! It’s an alpha off!” She heard Denki exclaim.
“So manly.”
While part of her wanted to go over there and smack both of them for their stupid commentary - she felt frozen to her spot, staring up at the screens and praying that nothing bad happened to her girlfriend.
+++++
“I accept, gladly,” Momo said and smiled widely at Kendou.
She absolutely refused to show any signs of weakness around the orange-haired alpha from Class B. While it was true that the two of them had worked together in the past and may have even formed a sort of friendship after their internships and the training camp, the moment Momo learned that Kendou had had a crush on Kyoka - all hopes were lost. There was no way Momo would ever allow anyone but herself to have Kyoka. And so, a sort of war for the hearing hero's attention and affection had raged on between the two alphas until Momo had come out on top. At first, it was easy for Kendou to ignore or even pretend that she still had a chance until Momo had marked Kyoka as hers and had received the smaller girl's mark in return. Momo could only imagine how much that annoyed Kendou.
So this battle between them today would be the first since everything between them had transpired and Momo was curious to see how it turned out.
It started out easy enough with everything going according to plan. Momo had Tokoyami send Dark Shadow out for reconnaissance so they could see where Kendou and the others were hiding. The goal for the exercise was to lock up as many of their rivals as possible in 15 minutes. Momo planned to find them and capture as many as they could as quickly as they could, while also utilizing everyone’s quirks. Her team had a decent range in terms of quirks and with two alphas on their team, Momo felt good about their chances of winning.
What she hadn’t expected was for Dark Shadow to get possessed by Kuroiro - since she was unaware that that was even possible, or for Komori to plant mushrooms all over the arena (including people’s lungs) disorienting everyone and causing Hagakure to freak out, and she definitely didn’t plan for Fukidashi’s comic words to destroy the foundation so much so that it ended with Momo being separated from her teammates.
When the smoke cleared Momo found herself alone with Kendou. Right from the start, the class rep from B was relentless with her attacks. Throwing punch after punch at high speeds and not allowing Momo much time to think or create anything except the shields she needed to block Kendou’s attacks. Or so that’s what Momo wanted Kendou to believe. While it crossed the creation hero’s mind that SHE may not be able to lead her team to victory without getting caught, she had devised a plan that would allow her teammates to continue without her presence and with her aid. So while Kendou was throwing punch after punch, Momo began to create her signature weapon: a cannon in which she had pre-created valuable items for her team to be shot out and over the word wall that separated them.
So when Momo fired the bag into the sky and over the wall, Kendou unleashed a signature move on the other girls' unprotected back. Momo had just enough time to create some capture tape that bound herself to Kendou before she passed out.
+++++
The moment that Momo lost consciousness - all hell broke loose in the viewing area!
Jiro let out the most anguished sound that anyone had ever heard at the sight of her mate’s condition. All of the fears and worries from the night before combined with that feeling of dread she’d had all day and it was easy to see why she’d immediately thought the worst had happened to the woman she loved. Everyone else from Class A was left speechless and angry. When Jiro’s voice finally broke, she began making her way onto the battlefield. Denki saw her and wrapped her in a bear hug to prevent her from doing anything stupid.
“Yo, Jirojacks, I know you're hurting right now but whatever you’re planning, don't do it.”
Her answer was to stick her jack in his ear and give him a zap, forcing him to let her go. Once she was free she elbowed him in the gut and ran as fast as she could to her mate.
Momo was in the process of being removed from Kendou’s side and placed on a gurney when the omega finally made it to her alphas side. Up close she could see all the cuts and bruises that littered her beautiful face and her anger rocketed up to 100. She bent down and placed a gentle kiss on the unconscious girl's head before she straightened up and whirled on the person responsible. She was so busy glaring daggers at the alpha before her that she didn’t notice the robots cart Momo away. Kendou was already backing up with her hands up in a placating manner when Jiro turned to face her.
“Jiro, hey. Look,” Kendou used one of her hands to scratch the back of her neck, clearly nervous. “It was an accident. I never meant for it to go that far. She pushed my hand.”
Jiro growled (and it was deeper and more threatening than her usual growls, this one sounded fierce and warned Kendou not to fuck with her) and leaped into the air onto Kendou, knocking the taller alpha onto her back. She positioned her jacks in a stabbing stance, not above poking the bitch in her eyes as retribution.
“What the fuck is wrong with you, Kendou?! She clearly wasn’t aiming the cannon at you and it was obvious that your team was going to win. But no. You just had to attack my mate when her guard was down. Some fucking HERO you are.”
Kendou was having a hard time not allowing her alpha instincts to take over so she could put the little omega on top of her in her place. True, she liked Jiro and there was a part of her that hoped that she would be able to have the punk girl as her own, but she still didn't appreciate being scolded and treated in such a fashion. She could feel the rage inside her threatening to take control - not wanting to hurt the smaller girl, she used her quirk to wrap Jiro up and held her while she got to her feet. She admired that the omega still kept struggling and fighting despite her predicament.
“Listen, Jiro, I said it was an accident. I'm sorry if my actions hurt you or Yaoyorozu.”
Jiro started lashing out with her jacks, trying to stab Kendou wherever she could.
“If? IF YOU HURT HER?! She’s fucking unconscious, maybe even dead right now thanks to you!”
The more Jiro spoke the more forceful she became with her jack attacks. Soon she was landing more hits than not and she could see the anger on Kendou’s face. She knew, deep down, that it was foolish of her to pick a fight with an alpha - as an omega she was naturally weaker - but at that moment she didn’t care. She was seeing red and fueled by her own rage.
“Ouch. Dammit. Jiro, stop.” Kendou exclaimed at one point before her eyes started to glow and her grip tightened.
If Kendou wasn’t in the mists of an alpha rage now then she was very close to it. Up until that point, the air had been filled with the scent of Jiro’s anger - burnt honey, but as Kendou slowly started to lose control her angry scent began to overpower the area and Jiro. The omega began to shake as her body, naturally, wanted to submit to a stronger opponent for self-preservation. She let out a little whimper and started to curl in on herself as much as possible. She felt the grip around her loosen slightly, as Kendou began to calm down upon hearing the whimper. She felt like an asshole.
Suddenly Jiro was freed from Kendou’s grasp and the orange-haired girl was dangling, her neck in a VERY pissed-off Momo’s hands. Kendou’s scent was replaced by Momo’s - which was less overpowering for Jiro because she knew her mate would never harm her. She whimpered again (this time in relief) and wrapped an arm around her love.
+++++
Recovery girl was shocked when the Yaoyorozu girl she was treating suddenly bolted up out of the hospital bed she was lying on and ran out of the room without a word.
Momo had been slowly coming too for a while and when she tapped into her connection with Kyoka to see how she was feeling. She felt her fear, anger, and panic. Something was wrong and Momo didn’t think it had anything to do with the training exercise. So as soon as she felt like she had control over her limbs she made her way back to Field Gamma to see what was going on with her mate.
The moment she passed through the gate she could see all of her classmates, rivals, and teachers all standing there watching the big screens, stunned. She briefly took in the strange scene before she smelled the burnt honey again - and it was slowly being outdone by something else - the scent of an angry alpha. Momo wasn’t sure that she’d ever gone into alpha rage so quickly before. It didn’t take her long at all to find Kyoka and Kendou. Momo wasted no time in using Kendou’s surprise at her reappearance against her.
Momo managed to create a pry bar and used it to break Kendou’s hold (and possibly some fingers) on Kyoka before she reached out for her enemy's neck with one hand and her mate with the other. When she had Kendou hovering in the air she growled, DEEP, in her chest - a warning to everyone around. Now she understood why no one had done anything: no one liked to get in the way of an angry alpha (even other alphas). A part of her could feel Kyoka wrapping herself around her and releasing a calming scent - her lover was obviously trying to bring her back, and it was working. But Momo refused to let Kendou go so easily.
“If you ever put your hands on my mate again, Itsuka Kendou, I WILL kill you. I don’t care if that makes me a villain - she is mine and it is my right to protect her and no one will be able to stop me. Do you understand me?”
When the big fist hero didn’t answer immediately Momo gave her throat a little squeeze of warning.
Kendou choked out: “Y-yes. I understand. I'm sorry.”
“Good. Don’t look at her. Don’t talk to her. Nothing unless absolutely necessary. Now get out of my face.”
Momo lowered the other alpha to the floor and released her. Once Kendou was free she ran off while Momo just sat on the ground and held her mate, comforting her and taking comfort in her.
“Yaoyorozu, Jiro.” Mr. Aizawa said as he approached them, cautiously. “Well you were in the right to defend your mate, can both of you work on showing more self-restraint in the future? If you both are so quick to jump to the other's defense then that will become an easy thing for villains to exploit as a way to harm you,” he paused and looked from one to the other. “Jiro, although admirable, it was very stupid of you to challenge an alpha to a fight- there was no way for you to win nor any way for us to intervene to help you.”
“You did what?” Momo asked her girlfriend, shocked.
Jiro just shrugged and laughed awkwardly.
“And Yaoyorozu - you can’t just allow yourself to fly off the handle like that. We’ve talked about this before, at the training camp, you have to be able to control your rage even when your mate is in danger. We can’t save you if you do something illegal in your quest to keep her safe.”
“Huh?” Jiro asked, not yet knowing about Momo’s actions during the fight with the gas guy at the training camp.
“I’ll tell you later,” Momo reassured her before turning to their teacher. “Mr. Aizawa, well I do apologize for the extremes that I may have gone to today, I will never be sorry for using all of my power to keep my mate safe. But I do think that you may be right about working on my self-control - I will try harder next time.” She said with a tilt of her head since she was unable to bow.
“Yeah, and I’ll try not to repeat my actions here today too.” Jiro chipped in making Aizawa roll his eyes and Momo giggle.
When their teacher walked away, declaring that class was over for the day and that they would try again the next day, Momo stood back up carrying Jiro in her arms.
“I can walk you know.”
“I know, darling, but I need you close right now.”
Jiro sighed but gave up protesting. They walked for a bit in comfortable silence, enjoying their nearness.
“How do you feel, babe?” Jiro asked, reaching up and cupping Momo’s cheek.
The taller girl winced slightly.
“Well, the adrenaline has worn off so I’m in a fair amount of pain at the moment.”
“You poor thing! Let’s go back to the dorms so I can nurse you back to health.”
“Mmm that sounds good and well we’re at it, you can explain to me what happened today between you and Kendou,” Momo said with a raised eyebrow looking down at the smaller girl in her arms.
Jiro could tell from her expression that there would be no way for her to talk her way out of it.
“Fuck.” Was all she managed to get out before they walked through the doors of Heights Alliance. She knew she’d be in trouble once Momo found out what happened. She buried her face in her girlfriend's neck for comfort.
Momo just chuckled and made her way to the elevator.
