A Mother's Work

Summary:

Anne Flanagan might seem out-of-touch and annoying from her son's point of view, but really she wants the best for him.
A villanelle written from Anne Flanagan's perspective.

Work Text:

‘Tis true a mother’s work is never done
However long she toils with vigour keen –
I do it all because I love my son.

I demonstrate how households should be run
And try to teach my boy to cook and clean –
‘Tis true a mother’s work is never done.

No guest – not even Barry – will I shun,
Though he turns up his nose at my cuisine;
I do it all because I love my son.

If my dear boy is feeling quite undone,
With tonics and advice I’m on the scene –
‘Tis true a mother’s work is never done.

If he complains that summer’s never fun,
I’ll take him to Dunbooey’s hills so green;
I do it all because I love my son.

I strive to do my best, so ev’ryone
Will see how well I’ve brought up my Oisín –
‘Tis true a mother’s work is never done;
I do it all because I love my son.
