Work Text:
I do not now rely upon my kin
To visit me and brighten evening’s gloam –
Instead, I sit and sip a glass of gin.
They might as well have thrown me in the bin
As pack me off to this infernal “home” –
I do not now rely upon my kin.
When grandsons visit, often I begin
To wish I was at liberty to roam –
Instead, I sit and sip a glass of gin.
I say “you’ve changed” with sneer instead of grin;
I don’t play nice; my gray hair I’ll not comb –
I do not now rely upon my kin.
Although my life’s been long and full of sin,
I’m kicking still, not buried in the loam -
Instead, I sit and sip a glass of gin.
Some days I like to cheat at cards and win;
Today from boredom I made up this poem.
I do not now rely upon my kin
Instead, I sit and sip a glass of gin.
