Summary
Javert cannot recall how long his eyes have been drawn to this one particular convict, despite all efforts and assertions on his part that he thinks nothing more of the man—nor the impressive swell of his shoulders—than he would any other; much less one of the bagne.
But he remembers clearly the first time: still young and awkward with his too-tall frame and too-long limbs, his whiskers yet growing in thin and patchy, his grip uncertain around the handle of his whip. He remembers when his gaze skitters inevitably—inexorably—irresistibly toward that selfsame figure he is ever aware of in his periphery, who follows him even into his dreams. And he remembers that sensation—that bolt of startled, blinding heat—to realize the other man is looking back.
