Sand Forged

Summary:

An AU in which Alastor and Lucifer are both human and Luci has dragged a reluctant Al to the beach.

Notes:

~ RadioApple Week 2024 - Day 7 - Prompt: Beach ~

Work Text:

“Remind me why I agreed to this torment, again?” Alastor grumbled, eyeing the fellow beach goers with ultimate disdain.

“Torment is a bit of a strong word, is it not?” Lucifer replied, amused by Alastor's grouchy attitude.

Alastor probably considered the sun as his mortal nemesis due to his pale complexion. Despite being in a similar boat, Lucifer basked in it whenever – and wherever – possible.

“Not at all.” He shook his head. “However, if 'torment' is off of the table then what lexis would you use, Luci?”

“Oh, I don't know...how about a potential fun day out? Or are you unfamiliar with the word 'fun'?” He teased.

“Rude.” Alastor grumbled but provided no witty rejoinder.

“Rude, indeed, but entirely accurate.” Lucifer said, sustaining a light hearted tone.

“Oh, I will prove to you that really is not the case.” Alastor said, a small smile tugging at his lovely lips.

“I look forward to it.” Lucifer said, Alastor's smile proving to be infectious. Perhaps he understood the word, after all? He just tried to conceal it beneath a mask of indifference.

After all, who could possibly hate the beach? He thought to himself. Having fun in the sun was something that Lucifer revelled in. All of the people willing to join in on entertaining games, the feel of the sand beneath one's toes, having a dip in the refreshing water. What was there not to like?

Lucifer's expression gave away his innermost thoughts – he was definitely an open book - and Alastor pounced upon them as though they were his prey.

“There is plenty not to like.” He groused. “Look at all of these sweaty savages, those infantile games, that water that has been tainted by all kinds of vile liquids, despite appearing clean and appealing.”

“What about sand castles?” Lucifer asked. “What is your opinion on those? I bet you find them absolutely pointless, do you not?”

“Actually.....” Alastor replied, his eyes suddenly twinkling with delight. “....I have always wanted to craft one.”

“Wait, really?” Lucifer asked, taken aback by this confession.

“Yes, really.” Alastor said, tone absolutely sincere. “I happen to like the idea of crafting something spectacular out of such a simple material. Not just like, actually. But love.”

“Then we better find a suitable spot so that we can get started.” Lucifer said, absolutely thrilled by Alastor's admission. He had truly been thinking that this whole ordeal was going to be a lost cause. But there was hope for him yet.

This day could still be salvageable, it seemed, and Lucifer would summon all of his power to make it so. Said power being the one of positivity. Alastor was grumpy enough for the both of them.

“Yes, let's.” Alastor agreed, the small smile intensifying into something much larger.

Lucifer glanced around, eyeing their surroundings like hawk, in order to locate the perfect position for their project. Fortunately, it did not take particularly long.

“Here!” Lucifer announced, dragging Alastor by the arm through swarms of shirtless people until they found a secluded spot.

“This really is....perfect.” His voice trailed off, choked with emotion. “...Thank you, Luci.”

“No problem, Al. Am I the best boyfriend or am I the best boyfriend?” He laughed heartily.

“You truly are.” Alastor said, face flushing to match the colour of his hair. “Now then, let us get to work!” He added, trying to redirect the path of the current conversation.

He loved Luci with all of his heart but actually voicing these feelings towards him, and aloud in general, was something that he still struggled with. But he was improving. Slowly.

“And how exactly should we begin?” Lucifer asked, eyes travelling from the sand to Alastor and back again. Clearly, this task was going to be one of monumental proportions. But he was up for the challenge. Anything to bring cheer into his beloved boyfriend's life.

“With the base, of course!” Alastor exclaimed excitedly. “We need solid foundations upon which to build our fortress.”

“Fortress?” Lucifer frowned. “I thought that a castle was our goal.”

“But the former sounds far more fun, does it not? Or do you not know the meaning of the word?” He teased, throwing back the taunt to Lucifer and winking cheekily as he did so.

“Fine. I would do anything for you.” Lucifer responded, clasping both of Alastor's hands in his own. “Please remember that. Always.”

“I...uhh....of course....” Alastor stammered, surprised by Lucifer's bluntness. “And I....well....I.....reciprocate those feelings.” He forced himself to admit, knowing that sharing honest feelings with one another was part of being in a romantic relationship.

“I am glad to hear it!” Lucifer beamed, his smile radiant, putting the sun itself to shame.

He scooped up a handful of sand, allowing it to cascade between his delicate fingers. It was grainy and tough and an ideal building material. As he thought this, all of his doubts regarding the difficulty of the task washed away, almost as though the waves themselves had lapped up his fears, obliterating them once and for all.

Besides, it did not matter how complex the fortress happened to be, as long as they enjoyed themselves whilst completing the work. Not that it could be considered as such. Something that brought such joy and giddiness to someone could hardly be deemed as 'work', even if it did involve hard manual labour.

And so, both Alastor and Lucifer combined their efforts, in order to craft the grandest sand sculpture that anyone had ever seen. The hours zoomed by, sweat dripping from their furrowed foreheads, but they barely noticed. They were truly in the zone. In their absolute element.

Who knew that two pale, easily burned, gents would be so happy being underneath the scorching sun for hours without uttering a single complaint?

“Aaaand we are done!” Alastor announced proudly, wiping away said sweat from his eyes that had begun to sting.

“Wow.” Lucifer gasped as their joint creation loomed above them both.

This was no ordinary, run of the mill, sand castle; it was the finest of fortresses, one that both Lucifer and Alastor could envision residing in. Even the most minute details of the sand fortress were striking, to say the least. The immense effort exuded on this piece of art – because art it truly was! - was absolutely apparent.

“Wow indeed.” Alastor beamed broadly, examining their handiwork with pure pride. “Luci....I....I owe you so much. Thank you for making this brutal beach visit into something seriously beautiful!”

“You owe me nothing.” Lucifer said. “Except for a kiss, perhaps.” He added with a smirk.

“That is something of which I will gladly grant you.” Alastor replied before lunging forward and doing as he was bidden, the whole act permeating pure passion. “Perhaps we could visit this spot more frequently.” He added, once their lips eventually parted.

“Perhaps.” Lucifer nodded eagerly before diving back in for more. This man – his brilliant boyfriend - was the epitome of irresistible and Lucifer was well and truly hooked. And the feeling was most certainly reciprocated; one could surmise from Alastor's purrs of pleasure alone that this was the case.

This was definitely one day out that neither of them would ever forget. One that they both would no doubt wish to hurry to replicate. If that were even possible.
