Chapter 1: Metamorphosis

Chapter Text

Rikki

I watched as Zane high-fives his butt-buddy Nate after tricking Cleo into his Zodiac boat and pushing it away from shore. Apparently her not knowing how to swim is a thing.

“Tell you what, Cleo. If you can get it to work, it's yours!” Zane yelled, I took that as my cue, running off the dock and landing into the Zodiac. Cleo gasped as Zane and Nate looked on in shock. I smirked and held up the spark-plug, getting a squee of excitement from Cleo.

“ You took the spark plug!” Cleo exclaimed.

“Zane's a pig. Anything to ruin his day can't be bad.” I replied with a smirk, placing the spark-plug back into place and turning back toward Cleo.

“Thanks, Rikki.” Cleo spoke cheerfully, but I frowned. No one had so much as spoken to me, but she...

“You know my name?” I ask. Cleo hesitates, face flushing slightly.

“Oh, well, I've seen you around. I meant to say hi, but...” Cleo clearly wasn't good at this, but she seemed more like a little puppy so I dropped it.

“Let's go for a spin.” I interrupted, grinning. Cleo nodded enthusiastically. I took the helm before taking us out of the marina to cruise around. Soon enough I noticed Cleo waving enthusiastically to another girl I recognized from our classes.

“Emma! Wanna join us!?” Cleo exclaimed to her. Emma looked over at us and her cool gaze landed on me.

     “Are you licensed?” She inquired.

“Are you my mother?” I quipped back, getting a smirk in return.

“That's fair, I'm coming down.” Emma said, walking down to meet us at the water's edge. I held out my hand to help the blonde into the boat which she accepted. Emma gave a confident smile and took a seat as I returned to the helm. We rode for a bit longer before I got a brilliant idea.

“Why don't we go out to sea?” I suggested.

“Is this boat even seaworthy?” Emma asked with concern.

“Should be.” I replied with a shrug, switching directions toward the open sea. I'd been curious what the water around the Gold Coast would be like and was glad to have someone to share it with, not that I'd admit it. We were having fun on the open sea when we approached an island in the water. I contemplated going toward it when the engine sputtered to indicate we were out of gas.

“That didn't sound good.” Cleo said with a frown.

“Well, shit. Out of gas.” I told her, moving to see if there were ores.

“Well, this is fantastic.” Emma spoke with sarcasm, I found two ores and rolled my eyes as I handed her one.

“Let's get rowing.” I ordered, but Cleo looked slightly panicked.

“But Mako Island has sharks and mangroves and─” But Emma cut her off.

“Cleo, we'll be fine. Just relax.” She promised the brunette. Emma and I rowed together toward the beach of Mako. It felt like it took longer than it actually did as Emma and I got out of the water to pull Cleo and the boat safely onto the shore.

“You both are lucky I have this.” Emma spoke confidently, pulling out a new-looking flip-phone and began to call out.

“Emma's always really prepared.” Cleo said like a proud parent.

“I'm so happy for her.” I replied, face scrunched in clear sarcasm when Emma frowned.

“No signal. We'll need to go higher.” The blonde says, grimacing. I felt my excitement come back, I was so down to explore the island.

“Lead the way, Fearless leader.” I joked, Emma didn't reply but began to walk confidently deeper into the island's forests. Cleo and I followed suit. It wasn't too bad, but it was slowly getting darker as time passed. We came toward a small waterfall area with rocks allowing for people to cross at the top.

“I still can't get a signal, let's keep going.” Emma ordered.  I didn't reply, opting to just follow behind her until Cleo let out a scream. Emma and I turned toward the sound, finding a hole that had a slide-like decline into a cavern. “Cleo! Are you alright?” Emma yelled.

“I─I think so. I can't get back up, though!” Cleo called. Emma's brows narrowed as she turned toward me.

“I'm going after her.” Emma spoke with confidence, going down the hole next. I groaned as Emma fell deeper. “Are you alright, Cleo?” I heard Emma ask.

“I think I hurt my foot a bit, but nothing major.” Cleo replied as I decided, fuck it! I followed down the hole and landed next to them, getting a glare from Emma.

“You were supposed to stay up there and find a rope!” Emma yelled in annoyance.

“What am I? A Mind reader?” I asked in frustration, “And what rope, exactly?” Emma deflated at my logic, but didn't reply as Cleo spoke up.

“It's probably better if we stay together. Let's follow the path?” Cleo suggested, the idea not being a bad one.

“That seems like the best option.” Emma agreed. I kept quiet as we made our way through the cavern-like area. It would make for a sweet place to escape from it all. Eventually, we found an opening in the center of what was an old volcano.

“It's not going to erupt, is it?” Cleo asked suddenly.

“It's been dormant for 3,000 years, I think we'll be fine.” Emma replied, I felt myself smirk.

“Oh? So you do know sarcasm.” I joked, getting an eye-roll from Emma as we all noted the pool of water in the middle of the area. Emma kneeled down and looked at the edge of the pool.

“It has tide rings, that means it's connected to the ocean.” Emma announced, proceeding to remove her shoes and socks.

“You mean, swim out?” Cleo asked nervously.

“I'll check. Wait here.” Emma ordered, driving swiftly into the water. I couldn't help but be impressed by her boldness and confidence as I sat with Cleo to wait for Emma's return. As time was creeping by I began to feel nervous.  Would Emma be alright? Fuck, I hoped so. Cleo was getting restless.

“Emma! Emma! Come back!” Cleo began calling in a panic; I placed a hand on her shoulder.

“Emma will be fine. Just you watch.” I spoke with confidence, glad that Emma chose then to reenter the area of the pool and resurface.

“There's an opening that leads out. We'll have to hold our breath for about 20 seconds, but we should make it easy.” Emma told us, the moon filtering through the top of the dormant volcano.

“But I... can't swim.” Cleo spoke sadly, I turned toward the brunette.

“We don't have much of a choice, Cleo. Plus, we'll help.” I promised her as I began removing my own shoes and sock, tying my laces together as Emma exited the water and did the same. Cleo reluctantly followed our lead, but when it came to entering the water, she was hesitant.

“Guys, do I really have to do this?” She asked, fear clear in her brown eyes.

“Cleo, you won't be alone. We've got this.” I promised, holding out my hand. Emma and I were already back in the water. Cleo started to reach out, hesitating a moment more before grasping my hand. She entered the water and started to go under. I dove and helped her to resurface. Right as we did, the full moon shone over the mouth of the volcano. The pool of water began to bubble, but there was no heat. It seemed to glow with an ethereal light around us. It was breathtaking, but we still had to get out.

“Okay, follow me.” Emma commanded suddenly. Cleo and I nodded as we all took deep breaths and began to swim out of the cavern. It was harder to swim with Cleo at my side, but I wasn't going to let go. Relief flooded me as we surfaced from the water, but I didn't get to enjoy it long.  The Water Police blinded us with a searchlight and commanded us to board at the rear of the boat. Emma and I helped Cleo to the boat and to finally get home.

Emma

I wanted to celebrate not getting in trouble and could think of no better idea than to go for a swim at the beach. I felt confident as I ran into the water of the secluded area of the beach. I dove in and felt the water around me. This was bliss, swimming is my life. Then it changed suddenly. I felt a shift, my body seeming to turn into water for a moment before I suddenly grew a golden orange tail. I breached the surface and looked around, trying to process the fact my legs were now a tail. I tried to keep my cool, deciding I needed to call Cleo. I exited the water and grabbed my phone. Cleo didn't answer immediately so I sent a text saying we needed to find Rikki and meet up.

I was on my way toward Cleo's when I saw Rikki looking perplexed slightly off the path. I walked closer to the blonde, unsure what to expect. Rikki saw me and jumped up, sky blue eyes filled with panic.

“Em, I think we need to talk.” Rikki spoke suddenly, looking around fearfully as-if someone would suddenly show up.

“You're right. I'm headed to Cleo's. She hasn't called me back yet and something... strange is going on.” I hesitated to say more as my phone dinged with a text. I looked and felt some relief, texting her back that I'd found Rikki and was going toward her place, “That was her. You coming?” I asked, Rikki nodded and we walked in silence to Cleo's.

Cleo let us inside the back door, since that's the direction Rikki and I came from and we all immediately began to word-vomit.

“It was orange and covered in scales!” Cleo exclaimed.

“The minute I hit water I─” I began, but Rikki cut me off,

“I was water for a second!”

     “I was a fish !” Cleo added

     “What's going on?” I asked

“That's what I wanna know!” Rikki said, before she and I paused to look around, “Is there anyone else here?”

“No, dad's at work and my sister and mom are shopping.” Cleo assured us.

“Okay, what happened to us?” I inquired.

“About ten seconds after we touch water we grow these...” Rikki began.

“And it vanishes when we're dry.” Cleo added, “And that's the same with you two, right?” I nod to Cleo to confirm. “The... tails. Are like...”

“Exactly like...” It begins to hit me.

“We look like mermaids.” Rikki finishes.

“I told you before you aren't funny. Mermaids don't exist.” I counter, “That's just too weird.” Then, a knock at the door.

“Oh no, it's Lewis. I forgot he's helping me with biology today.” Cleo explained as the door opened.

“Cleo?” Lewis called as Cleo went over to him. “Cle─o, did I get the time wrong?” Lewis asks while walking further inside toward the table.

“No, we said 9.” Cleo confirms.

     “Oh.” Lewis spoke quietly.

“But something has come up.” Cleo tells him.

     “Like what?” Lewis inquires.

“Just something important.” Cleo says, turning to Rikki and I. We make it clear not to tell Lewis with body language, “But... not so much you need to know about it.” Cleo says as she leads him back toward the door, “Sorry Lewis. I have to cancel.”

“Oh.” He says, clearly still lost, “Maybe some other time?” He asks in confusion.

“Lewis?” Cleo asks suddenly, “You're smart, do you know anything about mermaids?” I could slap Cleo and it was clear Rikki felt the same.

     “No? Not really.” Lewis replies.

“Okay, sorry. Bye” Cleo says, leading him out the door. Once it shuts, Rikki and I walk to face Cleo. “What?” Cleo asks.

“Do you know anything about mermaids?” Rikki said in a sarcastic high voice, “Are you crazy?” She demands, I felt the same as we stared at Cleo.

“Cleo this is really serious. If anyone found out about this we could really be in big trouble.” I added.

“Well, maybe─” Cleo began, but I interrupted her.

“Something very strange has happened to us. We don't know how─” I look at Rikki for a moment before turning back to Cleo, “─we certainly don't know why.”

“There is a way for us to find out more.” Rikki says.

     “How?: Cleo asks.

“Go back in the water?” Rikki suggests like it's obvious.

“No way. Not me.” Cleo says firmly, sitting down. Rikki and I sat on either side of her.

“I'm going.” Rikki states, “I just don't think I should go alone. Any volunteers?”

“I'm in.” I confirm with Rikki who gives me a genuinely happy grin.

“Have fun with that.” Cleo grumbles, making it clear she wouldn't join us. I shrug, walking out with Rikki.

“Should we really leave her?” Rikki asks.

“We can't force her, but we can still enjoy this.” I assure Rikki. I lead her to an area I know is extremely secluded, glad no one is on the beach as we arrive. We stand on some rocks, looking out at the waves.

“I'm not so sure about this.” I say, arms crossed.

“It's alright, I am.” Rikki replied confidently.

“That gives me no confidence whatsoever.” I reply, but it actually does make me feel better. We walk off the rock and toward the water. Rikki held out her hand and I grasped it in mine, pulling it closer to me for support as we walked into the water.

“About ten seconds, right?” Rikki asks, sky blue eyes gazing at me.

“Yup.” I replied stiffly as we both began to count down. We hit five (since we started counting late) before we transformed. We both fell into the sand next to each other, I'd forgotten to think about the fact our mermaid forms had no covering around our breasts. I grinned at Rikki who grinned back before we both flopped our way into the ocean. It felt natural to me, but Rikki was struggling slightly. I moved toward her and swam around to give her a visual of how to move. Rikki picked up on what I was doing and followed my lead. It wasn't hard for instinct to take over for Rikki like it had me as we swam deeper into the water. I tried not to focus on the fact that Rikki's breasts were beautiful. Round and perky with small, pink areola and protruding nipples. My own breasts were similar, but my nipples were flat. I shook my head, this was not the time to be entranced by Rikki's breasts. We began swimming through the reefs, playing hide n go seek and racing through the water. The sea life is amazing and we even got to play with wild dolphins! I could spend forever in the water with Rikki.

Cleo

I found Lewis in the JuiceNet Café looking up─of course─mermaids. I paused and felt myself grimace.

“Lewis, you don't need to do that.” I told him, biting my lip.

“It's fine, I have too much time on my hands.” He replied, I did my best to hold in a sigh.

“Can we go for a walk?” I asked, he grabbed his bag and logged off.

“Sure, let's go.” He said as we walked out of the café and began telling me various things he'd learned about mermaid lore. “...mermaid legends have been around for about 3,000 years.”

“People really believed in that stuff?” I asked.

“Yeah, apparently sometimes they were good omens, sometimes they brought trouble with them.” Lewis said.

“What kind of trouble?' I asked, but as if the universe wanted to answer my question, Zane rode up on his motorbike. “Oh no...”

     “Just ignore him.” Lewis said.

“Let's go back.” I pleaded, but Zane revved up and drove between us before stopping to block our way.

“Nervous?” Zane asked, placing his helmet on the bike.

“What do you want, Zane?” I demanded.

“My father didn't appreciate having the water police knock on his door.” Zane spat.

“Well, you shouldn't have told me to keep the Zodiac.” I countered.

“I don't like people making me look bad, Cleo.” Zane spoke threateningly, walking closer to Lewis and I, “Especially chicks like you.”

“In front of your dad, you mean Zane?” Lewis shot back, “Sounds like you're scared of him.” I noticed the fire-hydrant and something told me I could use it to help.

“You think you're better than me, Lewis?” Zane sneered, “Is that it?”

“Almost everyone is better than you, Zane. Deal with it.” Lewis was on fire, but I was focusing on the hydrant, moving my left hand back and forth slowly as Lewis stood in front of me as Zane crept closer.

“Tough guy.  Got yourself a protector have you, Cleo?” Zane taunted.

“You and whose army?” Lewis asked. Zane chuckled.

“It's not going to do you any good. You know, Cleo, one of these days with or without Lewis... something really bad might happen to you.” As Zane finished his threat the hydrant burst open and water spewed out at a high frequency. Zane was launched back and far into the water. The torrent only stopped when I stopped my hand motions. Lewis was shocked, but I turned tail and left before he could say anything to me.

Rikki

Emma and I were walking back to her house, discussing our day at sea.

“So, we climb out of the water and everything's back to normal when we're dry. Like nothing ever happened!” Emma exclaimed, the joy apparent on her face.

“But it did! Aw, it's got to be the best experience of my life. I mean, are there even words for that?” I asked as we approached her door.

“I don't think so.” Emma replied, giving me a wink. I didn't have time to react as Cleo's voice rang out.

“Wait!” Cleo exclaimed, running up, “You will never believe what just happened!” She grabbed our arms and drug us inside and up to Emma's room. “I'll be back.” She spoke suddenly, rushing downstairs to leave Em and I confused until she came back up with a glass of water. She sat it down and began slowly moving her hand like turning a knob slightly to cause water to flow out of the glass like a snake while also not running out of water.

“And it grows even more.” Cleo spoke stoically.

“Where's the extra water coming from?” I asked.

“I dunno.” Cleo replies, stopping her hand movements which causes the water to fall toward Em and I, but Em fucking freezes it. We all look shocked.

“Did I do that?” Emma asks.

“It wasn't me.” Cleo confirms. Em doesn't move, but I sit up.

“Okay, this is over the top. I'm getting tingles now.” I admit, not that I wasn't getting plenty of tingles at seeing Em swim earlier, but no one needed to know that.

“All I did was...” Emma says as she sits up and does the motion with her hand again, freezing water in a jar that was holding a white rose. It was amazing. We were all grinning. I couldn't help but wonder what I could do, so fuck it. I did the pose for Spider-Man's web shooting, but nothing, then like I was doing a hand blast out of a shonen anime.

“Not fair, why don't I get to do the cool stuff?” I demanded.

“I don't think cool is the word.” Cleo said, “It's scary... but you should've seen the look on Zane's face.” I couldn't help but giggle at that.

“This isn't funny!” Emma growled, “We've got to keep this a secret. From everyone. We could end up dissected or in the circus or something.”

“So this secret, it's just between the three of us?” Cleo asks

“Our secret. Our responsibility. Whatever happens we're in this together.” Emma says with confidence.

“That doesn't mean we're married, does it?” I joked, smirking.

“Now that was actually funny.” Emma replied with a grin.

Chapter 2: Pool Party

Summary:

Chapter two on day 1! Don't get use to this. xD 5 chapters total going up today.

Chapter Text

Emma

Miriam was giving out invites to a party and makds it clear to Rikki she isn't invited, but of course Rikki gives no fucks which I like. Cleo, on the other hand, is excited to go until Miriam tells us it's a pool party. For a moment, she was going to go with Lewis, but changed her mind. She walked alone to class, so I turned to Rikki.

“We should talk to her after school.” I state, to which Rikki nods. We both walk to class together as we have been lately. I felt I had to figure out something to keep Cleo from being so depressed. After class I told Cleo to meet up at my place after school, which she reluctantly agreed to. We had to figure out this mermaid thing. I already would have to skip swimming practice...

“Maybe it just takes practice to not change? Like exercising a muscle.” I suggested, Cleo sighed.

“We should just ask for help.” Cleo suggested again, but I felt myself frown and Rikki sat up to look at Cleo flabbergasted.

“Not going to happen, Cleo.” Rikki stated, Cleo sighed.

“But I tell my mom everything! It would be alright.” Cleo argued.

“Do you want to be locked up?” Rikki asked.

“Why would we be locked up?” Cleo asked clueless.

“Because we're different?” I spoke, feeling slight anger, “Because we can do things other girls can't do? Because they're scared of us?”

“Fine, I won't tell anyone... except Lewis.” Cleo answered, I wanted to scream but Rikki spoke up.

“No, Cleo. Not Lewis. Not anyone.” Rikki made it clear.  Cleo pouted, but conceded.

“I had to miss swim practice today.” I told them to change the subject.

“Oh, Emma, I'm sorry...” Cleo said, I waved her off.

“So we need to practice keeping ourselves from changing sooner rather than later. Any idea where we can?” I asked.

“Actually, yes.” Cleo replied, “I know exactly where.”

The area was extremely secluded, but Cleo was still intent on not going into the water. Rikki and I, on the other hand, were intent on doing it. Rikki and I held hands again as we envisioned having no tails, but we failed. Unfortunately, we heard someone coming. Rikki and I got to a safe place as Lewis appeared with his fishing supplies. Rikki and I were looking over a rock at him.

“Oh, guess my secret fishing spot isn't so secret.” Lewis spoke, sighing softly, “Cleo, you're a great secret keeper.” He spoke with sarcasm, but it was kind. “Well, since I can't fish I'll join you for a swim.” Lewis says, beginning to unbutton his shirt.

“We're naked, Lewis.” Rikki said suddenly, which was technically true, but I felt my face flush.

“Just a quick dip then?” Lewis asks, I felt frustrated at his failed humor.

“Goodbye, Lewis.” I snapped back, Lewis sighs in defeat.

“The offer was there.” He states before walking off. Cleo rounds on us after he's a ways away.

“Did you have to say that!?!” Cleo asked, her voice high-pitched.

“It worked, didn't it?” Rikki argued.

“Plus, she isn't wrong.” I added, Cleo shifted uncomfortably.

“Right... I didn't think of that...” Cleo mutters, then looks at Rikki and I with surprise. “You two are okay with that?” I felt my brain shut off for a moment, unsure how to answer.

“I didn't think of an alternative.” Rikki admitted, Cleo turned to me.

“It hasn't come up.” I admitted.

“How has it not come up?” Cleo asked, looking between the two of us.

“Well, since it has now Em and I can come up with something.” Rikki stated.

Arriving back to my place, I felt a bit lost. We couldn't find a way to be in water without transforming, which meant I'd have to quit the swim team... we walked into the kitchen and Cleo grabbed a glass of water as I began pouring some orange juice.

“I hate this, why can't we just be normal?” Cleo complains as she moves a ball of water to her mouth so she doesn't have to drink it from the glass.

“I'm going to have to quit the swim team, it's been my entire life.” I complained, placing a Popsicle stick into the OJ and freezing it. Rikki glowers at us.

“All you two do is whinge whinge whinge! You ─” She indicated Cleo, “Just drank water midair and you ─” She indicated to me, “Just made your own freezie. I don't even have a power and do you hear me complaining?” She asks, Cleo and I look away, because no she hasn't. “I've had enough. I don't want to hang out with whinges.” Rikki spats before walking out of the house. I feel disgusted at myself as Cleo speaks up.

“I know how she feels... sometimes I don't want to be around me...” Cleo admits, but I had nothing to reply. What could I say to that?

Rikki

It had been a few days since the fight and I hadn't talked to either Cleo or Emma. I'd kept to myself at school as well. I was chilling at the JuiceNet Café when Lewis walked up and tapped my shoulder from behind.

“Rikki, can I sit?” Lewis asks.

“I certainly hope so, just not with me.” I replied as I flipped the pages of the magazine I was reading. Lewis sits with me anyway.

“I know we've had our differences, um, thanks.” He says as a coke is brought to the table for him, “Uh, but I wanna know what's wrong with Cleo.”

“What makes you think there's anything wrong?” I asked.

“Well, I've asked her to go to Miriam's party, like, a hundred times now and every time she changes her mind.” Lewis tells me.

“Maybe... she doesn't like you! Did you think about that?” I asked with a mix of cheerful disgust.

“Yes, it actually did cross my mind.” Lewis admits, “But I thought oh no, she hangs out with you! Her standards must be pretty low.”

     “Goodbye, Lewis.” I sneer.

“No, no, can you tell me what's wrong or not?” He asks.

“Not.” I reply, my anger rising.

“Please, I know there is.” Lewis pressed.

“Look, I'm not even speaking to her at the moment, okay?” I pull my right hand that's on the table into a fist, “I'm just trying to be alone right now. So, if you can just...” But the coke begins to boil and steam rises, shocking Lewis and I.

“What the...?” He touched it, “Ah! It's hot! Is this somebody's idea of a joke?” Lewis questions. I look at my fist and smirk. I'd finally found my power! I wanted to test it more, so I left Lewis in the dust and walked to the beach. I found a small tide pool and began to clench my fist to heat it up and it worked perfectly. I immediately called Em and told her to meet with me.

“I'm glad you called. I'm sorry I was being so negative before, I'm not usually like that.” Emma says, but I stop her.

“Em, it's cool. I need to show you something.” I tell her, unable to hide my grin. We go to Lewis's secret spot. We enter the water and swim for a moment before laying on the rocks.

“Okay, I'm officially curious! What do you have to show me?” Emma asked.

“Hey, it's you guys.” Lewis's voice comes at us, shocking us. “Are you naked again?” He asks as we duck down a bit.

“Um...” I begin as I look down at my bare chest and tail, “We're having a bit of a girl talk Lewis.”

“Yes, but are you naked?” He asks again.

     “Go, Lewis!” Emma squeaks out.

“No, no I'm here to fish! I'm having withdrawal. I need the relaxation. If anyone's going, it's you guys.” He demands.

“Don't push it, Lewis.” I told him.

“Yeah, shouldn't you be following Cleo around?” Emma shoots at him.

“No way, I'm totally over that. Trust me. I don't know what's going on with Cleo lately. She just can't make up her mind.” Lewis pauses as he gets a text. “You see what I mean, It's Cleo. She's going to the party again. I give up.” Emma and I look at each other with panic.

“Lewis, you've got to do us a favor. Make sure Cleo doesn't go to the party on her own. Call her back!” Emma pleads.

“No, I'm here to fish.” Lewis says.

“Lewis, this is important. She could be in trouble.” I told him.

“I am not some lackey,.” He said while dialing her number, “I am not some all-purpose servant.” He has the phone at his ear, “You really think you can tell me what to do and I'll jump─And her phone's off.”

“She could be in big trouble, Lewis! You like her, don't you?” I ask.

“Well, in a friendship kind of way.” He replied.

“Well?” I say. He relents and leaves. Once he's gone I turn to Emma, “I'll show you my power now.” I tell her as I steam-dry us back to human form.

“Holy shit, that's─no time, let's go.” Em stops herself as we dash back to help save Cleo.

Em and I turned the corner to see mer-Cleo holding Lewis's hand.

     “Where is everyone?” Emma asks.

“Inside.” Lewis replies and I note Emma freezing the sliding door handle and rushing back to my side. “She weighs a ton, help me.” Lewis demands of us.

     “We can't.” Emma tells him.

“If we get wet we'll grow tails too.  Is that what you want?” I asked Lewis.

“Both of you?” He asks, Emma and I nod, “All of you?” He asks turned toward Cleo who nods. “Seriously?” He says as he lifts Cleo out of the pool. Zane tried to open the door, so I hurried and began to dry Cleo.

“It stings...” Cleo complains, but I ignore her and she turns back human.

“There you go, steam dried.” I smirked.

“You found your power!” Cleo exclaims with a smile.

“What's going on?” Lewis asks, but Cleo stands.

“We'll explain later, come on.” Cleo orders as we began to rush away. I stopped for a moment, debating if I wanted to be petty. Emma comes back for me.

“Rikki, come on.” She pleads. I quickly hold out my hand and begin to evaporate the pool, leaving it empty.

“Never liked pool parties anyway.” I chuckle to myself.

Soon enough we're at Em's house to talk with Lewis as well.

“Tell anyone and we'll maim you.” I threatened and Lewis looked offended.

“I'm not that stupid! If anyone found out you'd end up as science experiments.” Lewis points out, confirming he had no intention which made me feel better.

“I quit the swim team.” Emma informs us and I actually feel bad for her, but no one speaks for a bit.

“It's bizarre, isn't it?” Lewis asks.

“It's good... and not so good.” Emma speaks, but she had a slight smile.

“I don't have the word.” Cleo says.

“I do: Random.” I say with a smirk, “Totally absolutely awesome.” I add. Emma nods in agreement, her ocean blue eyes meeting mine in a familiar way. Lewis grinned, but Cleo huffed. It was clear Cleo was having none of it.

Chapter Text

Emma

Rikki and I were swimming quickly, we'd been holding our breath for ten minutes already. Rikki stopped for a moment, grinning at me while pointing out a school of fish swimming past. We couldn't talk underwater, but we'd found our own way to communicate with facial expressions and motions. I nudged Rikki's shoulder which caused the other blonde to turn to me and grin. She pulled me into a tight embrace and I embraced her back. I tried not to think about how our breasts were pressing against each other, but no one else could see so who cared? It was Rikki and I alone at sea so why couldn't I enjoy the intimacy? Part of me dreaded when Cleo finally accepted the water since she'd balk at these kinds of things.

Rikki pulled back, giving me a wink before taking off. I took off after her, no way was I going to let her beat me in a race even with a head start. I overtook her easily, but she was getting better quickly. I reached out and grabbed her hand, stopping our race. Rikki looked at me quizzically as I tried to sort out my emotions. I felt the urge to kiss her, but I didn't want to do that... right? So I compromised with myself, kissing Rikki softly on the forehead. Rikki flushed a bit, but smiled. Then, as payback for cheating earlier I sent frost up her arm, sticking my tongue out as I dashed off.

“Guess how long we can hold our breath, Lewis?” I asked, excited.

“Umm...” Lewis clearly didn’t have an answer.

     “15 minutes.” I state proudly, giving Rikki a high-five.

“It's pretty cool.” Rikki adds, smirking.

“We probably could stay down longer if we tried.” I said casually.

“You're on.” Rikki challenged with a smirk, sky blue eyes twinkling.

“You think you can beat me?” I scoff.

“I know I can.” Rikki grinned with confidence.

“Bring it on.” I can't help but love the rush of having Rikki around.

“You guys must be jumping out of your skin at this stuff.” Lewis said, seeming proud.

“Yeah.” I turned to look at Rikki, knowing how much we loved it all. “Well, two of us are.” That's when Cleo walks up.

“Guess what! These two can hold their breath for 15 minutes!” Lewis exclaims.

“Lewis!” Rikki and I scold in unison, but Cleo ignores it as she sits down. She begins to talk about our Biology assignment and refuses to discuss the mermaid thing, storming out of the café. Lewis leaves Rikki and I a little while later, so she and I begin to walk toward my house.

“I've got no idea how to get Cleo to swim with us.” Rikki said, frowning. I didn't say anything in reply, but nodded. It has become easier, not needing to verbally reply when we've been relying on body language more. Which is why it was hard not to notice how we kept more distance on land than we did at sea. I keep telling myself it must be normal for mermaids. Cleo would probably be the same.

Rikki

At school, we'd hope Cleo would listen to Lewis. Em and I listened in on the conversation, but it didn't go well.

“I am not one of those things !” Cleo says in disgust, “I don't like the water and never will!” But Em and I knew Cleo protested too much. She loved her fish and marine life, she just didn't know how to swim.

“You can't hide from this forever.” Lewis tells her before walking off. He finds us and signs. “I bombed.”

“We noticed.” I replied, Emma gave me a look and I quieted.

“We'll try to talk to her. It's... a girl thing.” Emma told Lewis as we walked over to Cleo. “We need to talk about this.”

“No, we don't.” Cleo muttered, but she wasn't walking away.

“Cleo, we're in this together. Can't we just─” But Cleo interrupted me.

“There are more important things than how long you can hold your breath or frolicking with dolphins!” Cleo exclaimed.

     “I don't frolic, I glide.” I deadpanned.

“Cleo, it's amazing. Plus, Rikki and I will be with you, like on Mako.” Emma told her, causing the brunette to go quiet. “Can't you try?”

“I'll... consider it. But first I want a way to have my chest covered.” Cleo demanded, which didn't surprise me.

“Em and I have been taking a bikini top to put on once we transform.” I lied, getting a dubious look from Emma. “As long as we take it off before we transform back, it's all good.”

“Well, I'll try that at home I guess.” Cleo spoke carefully, not committing to anything. “But we need to get to class.”

I sat at Emma's house as she was biting her lip while looking over her homework. I smirked, finding the small detail adorable. Not that I'd tell her that. I'd kept my sexuality hidden for a reason. I didn't want anyone to judge me like at my old school, plus the mermaid thing... Em would likely freak out if she knew I was a lesbian. Not that I didn't wonder if she was possibly bisexual.

“So, we've been swimming in bikinis?” Emma asked suddenly.

“Yup. Totally normal mermaid things.” I replied, but Emma was giving me that look . It made my knees weak, especially since I didn't get it on land a lot.

“That was a good idea. Hopefully it opens Cleo up to swim.” Emma replied before closing her biology book. “So, you should know why she both loves and hates water.”

“Yeah, the contradictions do keep adding up.” I reply, waiting for Emma to tell me.

“While out on her dad's boat when she was five she almost drowned. She fell off the deck while everyone onboard was distracted. She remembered seeing a─she called it a sea monster. It scared her, grabbing her as she passed out. She woke up on the boat, soaking wet. No one could figure out how she got back onto the boat. I always thought she hallucinated the sea monster... Now?  Not so much. She loves being around the water, taking care of fish and other marine life, yet is deathly afraid of the risk of drowning.” Emma took a deep breath, “She's refused to enter the water ever since.”

“We'll help her, Em. I promise.” I reach out and grasp Emma's hand, Emma entwines our fingers and I try not to think of how my heart flutters.

Cleo

I sat on my bed, debating what bikini top would look good with the mermaid tail. I wasn't sold on the idea of being in the water, but I should at least be prepared. I decided on a purple top I enjoy when sunbathing. I wondered if Emma or Rikki had tried to keep the tops on, so I decided to try myself, grabbing an older top I didn't wear anymore and walking to the bathroom. Might as well take a bath while I'm at it.

I entered the tub after it filled with water and waited until I was full mermaid. I enjoyed my time relaxing until I knew I needed to get out. Didn’t want Kim banging on the door again.  Reaching over the side of the tub, I pull the old bikini top up and put it on as the water drains. I grabbed the hair dryer from the sink and began to dry myself. I bit my lip, wishing I could dry myself quickly like Rikki. Finally, I was able to leave the bathroom. I took my time and began to finish my homework until it was near bedtime. I used my power to bring a bit of water from the fish-tank to land on me. I covered my mouth feeling pleased as the bikini reappeared. I took the old one off and put the preferred purple one on.

I felt confident as I walked up to Emma and Rikki at school. Both blondes were deep in conversation, so I decided to interrupt.

     “Guess what?” I asked, excitedly.

“What, Cleo?” Emma asked, raising an eyebrow as Rikki crossed her arms.

“We can keep at least bikini tops on when transforming! They'll disappear when we go back to being human and reappear as mermaids.” I informed them, getting a surprised look in reply.

“Well, that solves that issue.” Rikki said, but her eyes narrowed on me a bit.

“So, does that mean you'll try to get into the water?” Emma asked, practically pleading.

“On one condition.” I replied, frowning.

I was in Lewis's boat with him as Rikki and Emma swam beside us on our way toward the beach at Mako Island. They agreed to let Lewis come for moral support plus transportation so we could practice away from the coastline.

“I'm really glad you're doing this, Cleo.” Lewis said, smiling.

“I'm not.” I replied dryly, “But I trust Emma and Rikki. They didn't let me drown here when I was a human and they won't now.” I was trying to hype myself up. Lewis let silence fall onto the boat as we approached the shore. I stayed in the boat as he pulled it up onto the beach. Lewis held out his hand for me which I accepted, getting off the boat. I moved forward, Rikki and Emma coming onto the shore and pulling themselves onto the beach. Rikki dried them off and I noted both had on bikini tops. Rikki's was red while Emma's was blue and vanished with their mermaid forms to reveal their attire from school.

“Okay, Cleo. How do you want to do this?” Emma asked, smiling softly.

“Um, what do you suggest, Emma?” I asked, unsure what the best thing to do would be.

“I think we should just dive in to not give you time to panic.” Emma suggested, I frowned.

“If... you really think so.” I muttered.

“We've got you, Cleo.” Rikki smirked, her and Emma walking to look for a good place to dive. Lewis walked up to me, smiling.

“You've got this Cleo, you're absolutely amazing.” Lewis said.

“Just because I have these powers, doesn't mean I'm amazing.” I huffed, walking to follow Emma and Rikki. Lewis said something, but I ignored it as I walked to the other two girls. “So, I just... jump in?”

“I'll dive in first. Follow my lead.” Emma instructed. I watched her dive like she always did for her swim meets, but made sure to take in her form.

“Okay Cleo, you next.” Rikki ordered.

“I'm not so sure about─'' But before I could finish speaking I was pushed into the water. I managed to take a breath before I went under, transforming not long after. Emma swam near me, pulling me away from the outcropping of rocks as Rikki dove into the water. I glared at Rikki as she transformed and swam toward us, smirking. I glared, but she swam quickly out, winking at me as she did so. Emma held onto my arm as I tried not to panic about holding my breath. Emma's look gave me the feeling of You're okay . Usually I was bad at reading people's expressions, but somehow it felt easier underwater. I relaxed, glad that holding my breath was easier than I expected. This… could actually be fun?

Emma

Cleo was picking up on everything as quickly as Rikki and I did, thankfully. Part of me was convinced it was partly because Rikki was provoking the brunette. I shook my head as Cleo began to gain more confidence in herself as she swam. Once we swam to the surface for air, Cleo began laughing. Lewis was sitting at the rocks we jumped off of, clapping as she surfaced.

“I knew you could do it, Cleo!” Lewis exclaimed excitedly, causing Cleo to blush.

“Thanks, Lewis. Honestly, it's actually really fun.” Cleo admitted, blushing.

“I'll be right here, Cleo. Go have fun!” Lewis promised. Cleo nodded and dove back under. Rikki and I exchanged smirks as we followed suit.

We spent hours in the water, until it got dark enough that we all needed to go home. Rikki and I helped Cleo pull herself onto the beach as Rikki dried us off, Lewis walking over.

“Are you swimming back, Cleo?” Lewis asked.

“I─I want to try to.” Cleo said bravely, making me very proud of her.

“Brilliant! I'm glad, Cleo!” Lewis was thrilled, pushing his boat off the shore. Rikki and I helped lead Cleo to the shore, Lewis coming behind us.

Rikki and I entered my house later than I intended. We'd walked with Lewis and Cleo to her house first, dropping Cleo off before saying goodbye to Lewis.

“Emma, is that you?” Mom called out.

“Yeah! Rikki, too.” I replied. Rikki closed the door, hip-checking me before we walked around the corner. Mom was setting the table for dinner─a spot for Rikki already set─and motioned for us to sit down. Dad and Eliot were already seated.

“Do I come over that often?” Rikki joked, but Eliot nodded.

“Yup, you do.” He spoke honestly. I noted Rikki's face flush slightly.

“Your father called to say he was working late, Rikki. I insisted we'd keep you for dinner, plus you and Emma usually work on school work late.” Mom said. I didn't think of how often Rikki and I usually stayed up working on school work or just chatting.

“Oh, okay. Thanks Mrs. Gilbert.” Rikki seemed slightly on edge, but I didn't want to think too much about it.

“It's no problem, Rikki. You're a delight to have around.” Dad spoke as Mom sat down. Dinner was mostly uneventful. Afterward, Rikki and I walked up to my room. I closed the door behind us as Rikki grabbed her backpack.

“So, what class are we starting with, Em?” Rikki asked, not even trying to fight doing schoolwork.

“Have I been this much of a good influence on you?” I asked, getting an eye-roll in reply.

“I mean, I have gotten you to sneak out with me for late-night swims so I'm pretty sure I'm countering your good influence with my bad.” Rikki retorted, I grabbed my Algebra book and pulled out my agenda to check what pages we needed to do. Rikki followed suit, moving to lay next to me on the bed. I felt myself flush as her hand brushed my arm, giving me goosebumps.

Rikki

The alarm blared loudly, I rolled over to turn it off, finding myself on top of Emma as I did so. I quickly shut off the alarm─committing to it by that point─and rolled back onto my side of the bed. It was clear we'd passed out while watching Torchwood.

“When did we pass out...?” Emma asked, I shrugged.

“Before the episode was over, sadly.” I replied, moving to the drawer I'd claimed to grab a pair of clothes for school. I motioned for Em to grab her outfit for the day as I began to change. Emma paused for a moment, eyeing me before she picked out her own outfit and changed. The idea of modesty was pretty far gone for the two of us at this point, but I couldn't deny Em was hot. Not that I'd tell her that. I threw my outfit from the day before into Em's hamper before the two of us walked downstairs to grab breakfast.

“Morning Emma, Rikki.” Eliot said, eating his cereal.

“Morning, Eliot.” Em and I answered in unison. I moved to make us an omelet as Em made me coffee and herself one of her odd smoothie things. Once we'd finished, I sat our plates on the table as Em sat down my coffee for me and her smoothie for herself. The morning was peaceful, for which I was thankful.

“So, I want to get a job at the Marine park.” Cleo told us, causing Emma to give Cleo an appalled look.

“Cleo, that's dangerous.” Emma spoke with a panic, “I mean, water?”

“I have an interview tomorrow. It'll be fine. After you both helped me with swimming I decided not to let my fear control me.” Cleo spoke confidently. I couldn't argue the point, but Emma turned to me expectantly.

“I say go for it, Cleo. If it becomes too risky I know you'll do what you need to do.” I stated, Cleo gave me a thankful smile while Emma looked like she would be sick. I could only hope it would all turn out well.

Cleo

“Emma, it's a tradition we're talking about! You've got to have the party.” I insisted, but Emma once more changed the subject to her concern about my new job. “Yes of course the tank is full of water Emma, they're aquatic mammals. Yes, I do remember what water does to me, but I told you before I'm not going to let that run my life.” I insisted once again. I heard my boss coming, quickly closing the phone and pocketing it.

“Ready, Cleo?” She asked. I nodded and took the buckets out to the trainers. I smiled as I watched the show before going back to continue my work. When I dropped a fish too high up into the water and got splashed I began to panic. My towel was already soaked! Emma was going to kill me!

“Try this!” An old woman spoke, throwing me a towel. I caught it and wiped the water away quickly. “Timed well, wouldn't you say?” She asked, eyes sparkling.

“Ah, yeah, thanks. Nearly got salt water in my eye. Would've stung.” I covered, trying not to panic.

“It does sting, doesn't it? But not when you're actually underwater. Why is that I wonder?” The woman asked, giving me a knowing look.

“I don't know.” I lied, did this old woman know?

“Lots of things are a mystery. Still, you've got time to learn. Staying dry! That's the big one.” The old lady clearly knew something.

“Cleo.” My boss said, motioning for me. I turned around and the lady was gone...

Emma

“She can be so stubborn at times.” I said to Lewis, handing him back my phone since I was in the water. I leaned over the edge of the boat to look at the book he was reading. “So, do you really think that's going to tell us something useful?”

“It's already told me you all are hotter than the average mermaid and they don't have cool water powers.” Lewis replied.

“There is only one place we can find answers to why we became mermaids.” I said, looking toward Mako Island. Lewis turned to follow my gaze. “That's where it happened. That's where the answers are.”

“Well, I'll just pull in my line and─” But I interrupted him.

“No, not you, Lewis. I'm faster on my own.” I told him.

“Are you really sure that's a good─” But I took off before he could finish. I did take a moment to follow a few dolphins. Once I got to the moon pool I was surprised to find a locket in oddly good shape at the bottom. I picked it up, deciding to get a better look I entered the surface of the moon pool.

“Looks like an old necklace to me.” Lewis stated as we sat in my room with Rikki.

“Whatever was in it is long gone, but I found it at the bottom of the moon pool. It's got to be important.” I said the last part while looking directly at Rikki as Lewis set up spray bottles for his latest experiment.

“Maybe there's earrings that are supposed to match it.” Rikki jokes.

“I'm just trying to find answers here.” I shot back. Lewis sighed.

“Settle, ladies. Emma, it still doesn't explain why you guys are mermaids.”

     “See.” Rikki chimed in.

“However, I think I've just about figured out which liquids won't turn you into fish.” Lewis continued, I reluctantly stayed quiet. Lewis then sprayed Rikki.

“Lewis, what are you─you think you're funny?” Rikki snapped as Lewis looked at his watch. “Eugh, what is that stuff?”

“4. 3. 2. 1.” Lewis turned to look at a still-human Rikki as I smirked. Rikki looked appalled and Lewis disappointed. “Mostly vegetable oil, No change.” I grinned at Rikki. “Interesting.”

Time went on as Lewis continued when mom called. I sighed as she kept asking about the party.

“I really don't think so mom. Okay, love you.” I hung up the phone. Rikki was almost done with her nails and I felt content.

“Is that the party again?” Lewis asked, grabbing Rikki's attention.

     “Party?” Rikki asked excitedly.

“Every year my mom throws this party for me. Only this year it's not happening.” I insisted. “Can't have heaps of people and drinks spilling and tails appearing.”

“When was this party supposed to be?” Rikki asked, sounding annoyed.

     “Tonight.” I admitted.

“Tonight. I hope I would've been invited.” Rikki's attempt at making me feel bad was kinda working, but I narrowed my eyes.

“It's not really your scene.” I told her.

“Party? Me? Those words were welded together!” She insisted, but I stayed quiet. “Oh. You don't want me there? Is that it?” Rikki sounded hurt.

“Of course I do.” I retorted.

“So the party's on?” Lewis asked.

     “No!” I exclaimed, “It's not,”

“Pity. Would've been great. Boys, dancing, boys.” Rikki seemed to be working hard to put on a front with Lewis here, which was a bit annoying.

“It's not really that kind of party, Rikki.” I informed her.

“What do you mean?” She asked, voice softening as she looked into my eyes. I looked down, feeling shy.

“It's a sleepover.” Lewis said for me, clearly feeling second-hand embarrassment. Rikki's eyes got wide as her expression went giddy. I knew she'd poke fun at me later. Then, Lewis sprayed her and I with another liquid.

“Lewis!” I chided. Rikki seemed to give up telling Lewis off, instead turning toward me.

“So a sleepover.” She grinned as I wiped the liquid off my leg, “Wow, that is so neato.” Rikki teased, I rolled my eyes at her, “Wish I hadn't painted my nails, we could've painted them together!”  I felt so embarrassed at her teasing. “Then we could've had a pillow fight and made each others─” Rikki then turned into a mermaid mid-sentence, “hair.” I gave a huge grin, karma was a bitch.

“That one had a 32% water content.” Lewis said proudly.

     “You okay?” I asked sarcastically.

“Fine, thanks Lewis.” Rikki spoke with annoyance, waving at the boy. Lewis shrugged, clearly finding it funny. I did as well, truth be told.

Rikki

“She knows something.” Cleo stated as we sat at the JuiceNet Café.

“Like what?” I asked, not sure how anyone could know.

“I'm not sure, but she knew it was dangerous for me to get water on myself.” Cleo replied.

“You got water on yourself!? I knew it.” Emma exclaimed, annoyed and cocky.

“One drop.” Cleo argued, “I wiped it straight off. Nothing happened, I took precautions. I can do this job.” Cleo was determined. I rolled my eyes.

“I still think we should've discussed this further.” Emma argued, like we already hadn't.

“What would that prove?” Cleo challenged, “You're just scared.” I was stunned Cleo would say something so bold, yet so true.

“No I'm not.” Emma shot back. I raised an eyebrow to indicate to Emma I didn't believe her.

“Yes you are!” Cleo challenged, “Scared for me and too scared to have your own party.” Emma had the decency to look disappointed in herself, fiddling with the locket she found. “Well I'm not living like that anymore, Emma. I'm not going to be scared of every drop of water I see.”

“As crazy as it sounds, I agree with Cleo.” I felt proud of how far she'd come in a short time, “Just this once.” Cleo's smug look was nice, though.

“Wow, where'd you get that?” Cleo asked about the locket to change the subject.

“The moon pool at Mako Island.” Emma told her, cheering up.

“It's beautiful.” Cleo said. Emma smiled, then pulled out her phone and called her mom.

“Hi, mom. I need you to start texting the invitations. Yes, all the girls on the list. Plus Rikki.” Emma said, giving me the sweet smile I'd come to love. I knew I was grinning like an idiot despite my teasing of her before. “Cleo's right. If I don't have this party it's like I'm not even putting up a fight.” Zane then came over with drinks.

“Free frozen colas.” Zane said with a wicked smile.

     “What about them?” Emma demanded,

“You looked thirsty.” Zane replied, but it was clear he was lying, “Enjoy.” Before I could stop her, Cleo took a drink, almost spitting it out.

“Prune juice?” Emma asked knowingly. Cleo nodded. Tiffany and Miriam laughed as I turned my head.

“Real mature, Zane. Real mature.” I chided. The invitations began to arrive on various girls' phones. All the girls in the JuiceNet─except Miriam─got the text. It felt good to see her squirm.

Emma

Cleo and Rikki helped me get the party ready, but I was still stressed.

“Emma, are you sure alfalfa and black carrot juice is the way you want to go?” Cleo asked.

“What do you mean?” I asked, not sure where she was going with this.

“I mean, I just thought maybe this year, now that you've quit the swimming team, it'd be a good change to try something new.”

“Like what?” I asked, throwing down a beanbag chair.

     “Like, sugar.” Cleo stated dryly.

“Sure, and why don't we have full cream milk whilst we're at it!” I challenged, “That's just crazy talk.” I was firm. “Are you sure people are going to go for these?” I asked, indicating the bottles.

“Sure, people will love them.” Cleo assured me, “Individual bottles. Any spillage? Contained!” She assured me as I placed down another set of towels.

“And these?” I asked, indicating the towels.

“Just say your mum was doing the washing.” Cleo suggested. The doorbell rang and I opened the door.

“Come in, you're right on time.” I assured everyone as they poured inside. It was starting off with a bang.

“Your mum's still serving vegetable salad, right?” I was asked, “I brought my supplement just in case.”

“I may not be on the swim team anymore, but I still eat sensibly.” I assured her.

“I'm tapering,” The other girl said, “But I've got to be up at 5 in the morning for training. So does Jay. So does Kelly─”

“Relax, I've set up a quiet room upstairs for anyone who has to crash early.” I assured them.

“That's our Emma. We so miss you on the swim team.”

“I still swim, occasionally.” I assured them.

“These are so cute.” They said about the bottles, getting a smile from Cleo.

“I told you it wasn't your scene.” I told Rikki.

“I can't believe it's anyone's scene.” Rikki clapped back, but I smiled because that's what I love about her. Then, the doorbell rang and I turned as Miriam let herself in with Zane.

“I don't know which of my numbers you sent my invitation to, but it managed to get lost.” Miriam said with her arms crossed.

“So how about joining it.” Rikki quipped.

“Glad you could make it.” I said with my voice dripping with sarcasm. To my chagrin, mum came downstairs.

“Zane! Fancy seeing you here!” Mum said with excitement. I rolled my eyes, walking toward mum and Zane. “What a delightful surprise!” Mum walked around the corner with Zane, “And Miriam! I haven't seen you in ages!” Mum hugged Miriam and I wanted to scream.

“I can't stand gate crashers.” Rikki muttered, “Want me to kick them out?” She offered, my hero.

“Forget it.” I said reluctantly, “I don't want to make a scene in front of mum.” I walked around the corner to the kitchen, Rikki following me.

“Your mum has invited us to stay and eat with you guys.” Zane stated, putting on his best 'good boy' act.

     “I hope there's enough food.” I stated.

“Oh, well Zane must have thought the same thing. He's brought along a contribution.” Mum said, buying his act.

“Pastries. Good and fresh.” Zane stated.

     “Very thoughtful.” Mum said.

“Mum, can talk to you.” I asked, pulling her to the side. “Mum, they weren't invited.” I stated, annoyed.

“Oh, well they're here now.” Mum said.

“And you asked them to stay.” I tried to keep how utterly pissed I was out of my tone.

“Emma, you and Zane might not get on the way you used to but he's an old family friend. You should make more of an effort.” Mum chided me, “He's a lovely young man. Alright, time for me to go. Have a good one.” She then went back upstairs, leaving me with this disaster.

“Hey, let's get into our pjs.” One of the girls suggested, others agreeing. Miriam forced Zane to stay focused on her as I went back to Rikki.

“This has got to be a parallel universe.” Rikki muttered.

Zane was surrounded by girls in their Pjs and everyone was focused on him.

“Well, this is boring.” Cleo complained, “Everyone's just talking to Zane.”

“He's up to something.” Rikki muttered.

“Taking over my party.” I growled, “Zane, I need to speak to you. Now.” I ordered.

“Sorry Emma, can't. The girls need me.” Zane stated, getting giggles.

“Zane.” I seethed, standing and walking toward him.

“Emma, really. I'd be letting them down.” He bemoaned.

“They'll cope.” I countered, dragging him away.

“Excuse me ladies, we're going to need a moment in private.” Zane's voice was smooth, but it had no effect on me as I dragged him to my room. I glared at him, but he just began to look at my trophies and such. “Aw, check this.” He said, picking a photo up, “Our old primary school photo.” He actually sounded like he cared, but I refused to be fooled.

“Whatever you're trying to pull, Zane, forget it.” I told him firmly.

“Hey, I'm just here with Miriam.” He argued.

“Oh really? And what does your girlfriend think of you flirting with everyone else?” I challenged.

“Girlfriend? I don't think so. Miriam's the girl I let follow me around whenever it suits me.” Zane replied.

“You are such a loser!” I snapped back.

“Me? Hey, I bought her a new outfit for tonight.” He said, placing the photo down. “She's getting a good deal.” He shot back. To my delight, Rikki entered the room with one of the plates of pastries.

“Pastries anyone?” Rikki asked, standing in front of Zane. I smiled, Rikki was the best.

“I really shouldn't. They're a gift for you and your guests.” Zane looked nervous, I liked that.

“Oh, but you are a guest Zane.” I insisted, “Go on. Go ahead.” Zane reached out for one, but Rikki stopped him.

“No, how about... that one.” She said, pointing a different one out. I smiled, knowing Zane would get it. He reached out and bit into the pastries, but he didn't actually do anything to them.

“Mmhm. Delicious. Perhaps I'll eat them all myself.” Zane smirked, “What? You didn't think I'd be so immature as to put prunes or something in them, did you?” Rikki looked ready to punch him and I felt the same way.

“Okay, let's go Zane.” I ordered, leading him to the door with Rikki following.

“You'll be sorry.” Zane said, “You're looking at the life of the party here girls!”

“Hey Emma, come show us your necklace!” Someone asked.

“Just a minute.” I replied, turning to Rikki. “Get rid of him and do me a favor? Keep an eye out. I wouldn't be surprised if he made a reappearance.” I asked Rikki who nodded.

Rikki

I pushed Zane out the door, waving smugly at him as I did so. Emma walked into the other room and I watched as she took off her necklace to show everyone.

“Are you going to get into your pjs?” A girl asked.

“Yup, just going to get some more pillows.” Emma replied, walking upstairs. The girls then started a pillow fight, but I watched from the corner. One of the girls went to one of the juice containers and Cleo shot up and went closer. I didn't hear what they said, but they began to pull it between them. Cleo ran into the closet and I realized she'd gotten wet. I paled as they opened the door, but Cleo covered by getting into a sleeping bag. The girls grabbed a different sleeping bag and began tossing each other in them as Cleo stayed still. I couldn't do anything to help her, plus I was watching the door. Miriam then turned it on Cleo, but she used her power to cause the juice to explode out from the containers which I silently applauded as the liquid got onto Miriam. Emma then came back downstairs. I watched from the corner as Emma gave out a nervous laugh.

“Oh, not again. Any time this room gets hot and full of people something just happens to the air pressure and bang! There go the drinks.” Emma said, I let Cleo pass to go upstairs to get dry as I kept an eye.

“Those drinks just ruined my new top.” Miriam whined. Emma was clearly nervous, turning around and going upstairs to help Cleo. One of the girls handed Miriam a towel and I kept watching. The girls sat down and Miriam got onto her soap box.

“You know, I'm thinking this is the worst party I've ever been to. Thanks for three hours of my life I'll never get back.” She sneered, walking away, but stopping and grabbing Em's locket. She went to leave, but I blocked the door.

     “Give it back.” I ordered.

“Give what back?” She asked innocently, as if I couldn't tell she was lying.

“You know what I'm talking about.” I retorted.

“Get out of my way.” Miriam sneered, but I grabbed her wrist and she dropped the locket. I picked it up, moving to allow her to exit. “I've got better things to do with my time. Chow.” She went to saunter away.

     “Thief.” I growled.

“Get over it.” She said with a smirk, “It's your word against mine and no ones going to believe you. Hey, some people might even think you took it.” Miriam grinned, “See ya.” She then left. I couldn't deny that she wasn't wrong. I went upstairs to the bathroom. Emma was having a heart-to-heart with Cleo, thanking her for convincing her to have the party and telling her she was right to get the job at the marine park. I smirked, deciding to wait for them downstairs.

We sat a little bit away from the group of girls and I'd just finished telling them what Miriam did.

“Miriam's got some nerve taking this.” Emma muttered.

“Should we tell everyone?” Cleo asked.

“No point.” I said, “Like she said, it's my word against hers.”

“We should join the party.” Cleo insisted.

“I'm thinking not, it's not really my scene...” I admitted reluctantly, Emma looked disappointed.

“Hey Emma, which guy on the swimming teams got the cutest legs?” Someone asked. I expected Emma to answer swiftly, but she looked like a fish out of water. I nudged Cleo to answer for her.

“Emma told me Sam.” Cleo lied, unsure what was going on.

“No way! Joshua!” Another girl challenged.

“Come on, we're building the perfect guy out of the guys on the swim team.” Another said. To me it sounded like Dr. Frankenstein came to live rent free in their heads.

“This might be safer with you.” Emma spoke quietly, handing the locket to Cleo.

“With me? You found it.” Cleo replied.

“And I nearly managed to get it stolen. I know how much you like it. Here.” Cleo took the locket.

     “You sure?” Cleo asked.

“Anyone who can hide a mermaid tail in the middle of a party has got what it takes to look after that.” Emma assured Cleo before the brunette joined the other girls in creating their Frankenswimmer.

“Rikki, can we talk in my room?” Emma asked.

“Sure.” I replied, following her upstairs. It did feel odd to be alone with all the girls downstairs, plus I wasn't doing the best job at pretending I like guys.

“Rikki, I think somethings wrong with me.” Emma looked frightened, I reached out and grabbed her hand.

“Nothings wrong with you, Em. Why would you think that?” I asked, genuinely confused. Emma tightened her grip on my hand, but said nothing. I kept silent as well, waiting.

     “I─”Emma hesitated, looking lost.

“Whatever it is, I won't judge you.” I promised, Emma took a breath to prepare to speak when she suddenly shook her head and sighed.

“Will you stay? Even though it isn't your scene?” Emma pleaded, I didn't know what was bothering her, but if me staying would help then I would.

“Anything for you, Em.” I promised.

Cleo

I was taking food out to the dolphins when I saw the old woman again and paused in my tracks. I put down the buckets and walked over to her, determined for answers. She looked at me and her face paled.

“You found it.” She stated, I touched the locket, “In the moon pool, didn't you? On Mako Island? That's where Gracie lost it...Fifty years ago.” She almost whispered, touching the locket.

“So you mean your─” But she interrupted me.

“I'm sixty-five years old, yes. But I don't look anymore than sixty-eight right?' She joked.

“That's not what I meant─” She interrupted again.

“I know what you mean. Even if you don't.” Her expression got sad. “What's your name again?”

     “Cleo” I replied, she smiled.

“You've got spirit, Cleo. Enjoy it! Enjoy it all you can! You and your friends! Maybe...” She went from excited to deep sadness. “You'll be alright.” She spoke softly, running a finger across the locket. “Eventually.” She then began to walk away.

“Wait! Don't go!” I pleaded, “What do you mean!?”

Chapter Text

Cleo

You'd think working the ice cream stand at the marine park would be easy, but then the old lady walked up to me suddenly.

“I've come to warn you.” She spoke ominously.

“Warn me about what?” I asked.

“Don't ever talk to sea perch. You can't trust those fish.” She stated carefully.

“Why would I talk to fish?” I asked, she grinned then got closer.

“Listen carefully, it's very important. You must not look at the moon's eye.”

     “The moons...?” I was lost.

“The full moon! It's dangerous. Do not look at it. Or it's reflection. When it's out do not touch water... whatever you do.”

     “But─”

“Hi, Cleo!” Emma called out, I turned to look and saw her walking up with Rikki. Turning back I saw the old lady was gone.

“Did you see that?” I asked, “That old woman! She was standing just there!”

     “What old woman?” Rikki asked.

“She knows about us! She said something about the full moon being dangerous.” I pleaded.

“I didn't see anyone.” Emma stated.

     “Me either.” Rikki echoed.

“She told me not to talk to sea perch. And something about reflections. And beware the full moon.” I told them.

“Sounds like she's had too much sun.” Rikki replied. I shrugged.

“There's something different about her.” I continued, but I realized they weren't having it right now. “We'll just talk later.” I muttered.

Emma

Since mum and dad were going out for his birthday, I was staying home with Eliot. Cleo and Rikki were coming over as well, which was a relief. Only two people for board games was dull. I was reading a book as Eliot sat in his room finishing his homework when the doorbell rang. I quickly answered it and let Rikki and Cleo in. I was glad it was a weekend since they were staying the night.

“Hey, thanks for coming.” I smiled, Rikki winked as her and Cleo walked in. Cleo seemed a world away. “Cleo?” I asked, concerned.

“Sorry, I can't stop thinking about what that old woman said: Beware the full moon.” Cleo said, looking distant.

“We're mermaids, not werewolves.” Rikki groaned, rolling her eyes.

“Enough of that, we'll be fine.” I assured Cleo.

“Alright, Emma. So, what games first?” Cleo asked.

“Can we play Uno?” Eliot asked, coming down the stairs.

“If you're ready to be beat.” Rikki challenged.

“It's on!” Eliot retorted. I snickered, tonight was going to be fun.

“I'm going to go grab a drink. Anyone want some?” I asked, standing.

“No, but Lewis should be here soon with Risk Legacy.” Cleo said with a grin.

“I'll take a coke.” Rikki said with a wink. I smirked, walking into the kitchen and grabbed a coke for Rikki and a bottle of water for me. I turned to grab a straw when I looked out the window. I caught the pool's reflection and everything seemed to...

Rikki

Emma seemed distracted by something, turning suddenly without grabbing herself a straw. She came back over and placed the coke down in front of me before sitting back down.

“Em? You okay?” I asked, confused by her ignoring the straw.

“Of course I am, Rikki baby.” Emma purred, winking at me. My jaw dropped at Emma's words, Eliot looked between us, confused.

“Um, Emma?” Cleo asked, I felt flush.

“What? She's fantastic!” Emma exclaimed, but before anything else could be said the doorbell rang.

“That's got to be Lewis.” Cleo said, jumping up to answer the door. Eliot looked between Emma and I. I didn't have a clue what to do.

“Anyone up for Risk Legacy?” Lewis asked, “Brand new and everything.”

“New!?” Eliot exclaimed as Lewis sat it down.

“Lewis, you and Cleo can play with Eliot while Rikki and I go upstairs.” Emma spoke with a seductive tone and I choked on my soda.

“Why?” Eliot asked, not understanding as Lewis, Cleo, and I were stunned silent.

“To─” But Cleo clasped her hand over Emma's mouth.

“Eliot, I'm sorry but can you go upstairs while we talk to Emma?” Cleo pleaded. Eliot nodded, walking upstairs. Once he was out of sight, Cleo let go of Emma's mouth.

“Em, what the fuck?” I demanded, but Emma just smirked.

“The plan is to fuck.” Emma retorted, I felt my head spinning,

“Emma, did you... see the moon?” Cleo asked. Realization dawned on me.

“Yeah, it's so pretty tonight.” Emma purred, “We should go swim to Mako.”

“Emma, no.” I demanded, Emma pouted.

“I'll do what I want!” Emma exclaimed, rushing out the door and toward the pier attached to her house. Cleo, Lewis, and I followed as we watched Emma jump into the water.

“Bloody hell, this isn't happening.” Lewis moaned. I wanted to snap back, but then I laid eyes on the moon. Everything around me seemed inconsequential, but then the clouds covered it again as Lewis went to backhand me. I shot up my hand and stopped him

     “Don't even.” I growled.

“You both─you almost got─” Lewis faltered.

“Let's get Emma out before Cleo and I fall under the moon spell. I can feel it's fucking pull.” I muttered.

Lewis got Em out of the water, but no amount of drying would turn her back. We needed a plan.

“Rikki, you'll just need to stay with Emma in her room.” Cleo told me.

     “Wait, what?” I exclaimed.

“Otherwise she'll try to find you. Lewis and I will keep watch over Eliot. Just keep her safe.” Cleo pleaded. I groaned in reluctance as we worked together to get Em back to her room and into her bed. I locked the door behind Cleo and Lewis. Emma─thankfully─couldn't do much to me while she was a mermaid.  I looked toward the bed where Em laid with the covers over herself, pouting.

“Em, you─” I began, but she turned her head away.

“You’d never date me, I’m not your ‘scene’.”  Emma scoffed, refusing to meet my gaze.  I felt so very lost.

“It’s the moon, Em.  This isn’t like you.”  I tried to remind her, not about to pour my heart out to her while she wasn’t herself.

“What?  Can’t handle me being bold?”  She challenged.

“We can talk when you’re yourself again.”  I promised.  Emma glared at me, but couldn’t do anything while in her current state.

“So, never.”  She hissed.  I gave a loud groan.  It would be a long night.

Cleo

“Is Emma sick?”  Eliot asked, causing me to panic for a moment.

‘Is she?’ I asked myself, but gave Eliot a smile.

“She’s been stressed lately, she’ll be fine.”  I promised Eliot, hoping I was being truthful.  Thankfully, Lewis and I kept him focused on the game until Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert came home.  After greeting us, they looked around confused.

     “Where’s Emma?”  Mr. Gilbert asked.

“She’s not feeling well so Rikki is keeping her company in her room.”  I partially lied, “She should be better in the morning.”

“Then thank you both more for looking after Eliot.”  Mrs. Gilbert thanked us.

“It’s no problem.  Eliot’s cool.”  Lewis said, getting a grin from Eliot.  We packed up, but I figured I couldn’t exactly leave myself with the full moon…

“See you at school, Lewis.  I should stay here as well.”  I told him, quickly texting my parents I was staying the night at Emma’s.

“Good luck.”  He spoke quietly before I walked upstairs and he left.  I knocked on Emma’s door.

“Rikki, it’s me.  I can’t go home, so…” I trailed off as Rikki opened the door, looking tired.

“Em passed out.  Can we please sleep?”  Rikki pleaded, looking like she’d been crying at some point.  I decided I didn’t need to know.

“Yes.” I whispered, getting a look of relief from Rikki, “Are you okay?”

“No.”  Rikki replied honestly, “But I will be.”

Emma

I stretched and felt a body at my side.  I looked over and saw Rikki next to me with Cleo next to her.  I felt very confused.

‘Wasn’t I getting water?’ I asked myself, unable to remember what happened the night before.  I gently shook Rikki who woke with a start.

“Rikki, it’s okay!  What happened?”  I asked, biting my lip.  I noticed her give a relieved sigh.

“You got hit by the moon spell.”  Rikki told me, “You weren’t yourself.”  She looked distant, frowning slightly.

“Did I do something bad?”  I asked fearfully.

“Nothing we couldn’t handle.”  Rikki promised, but it was clear she wasn’t telling me everything.

“Rikki─” I began, but she interrupted me.

“Em, it wasn’t you.  Don’t worry about it.  Please.”  Rikki pleaded, causing me to relent.

“Alright.” I agreed as Cleo began to stir, sitting up and looking at us.

“I told you so.”  Cleo huffed, getting a groan from Rikki and I.

Rikki

I sat in my room, trying hard not to think about the night before.  Emma wasn’t herself, but what she said…

“Am I really so unappealing?”  Emma asked, hurt in her eyes.  It felt like my own personal hell as I argued with Emma.

“You’re beautiful, really.  I just don’t think we should talk about this now.”  I kept trying to deflect, but she was wearing me down hard .  Emma pouted, putting her hand on my cheek.

“Then when?”  Emma asked, the lack of self-restraint was infuriating.

“Emma… I’m gay.  I─I do like you, but I’d rather not ruin what we have.  You aren’t yourself.”  I admitted, frustrated as I realized I’d begun to cry.  Emma looked shocked, but backed off.

“Oh.  Do you not trust me?  Is that why you didn’t tell me before?”  She asked.

“I didn’t want to make things… awkward.”  I admitted.  She turned away from me, covering herself with the covers and I moved onto the floor, trying not to let my crying be heard.

“She doesn’t remember any of it…”  I muttered aloud, “Is that good or bad?”  I wondered as I shifted my position on my bed.  I outed myself, she got hurt I didn’t tell her, and woke up remembering none of it.  “I should be thankful.”  I told myself, but part of me wished I could just get the nerve to tell her.
