“Get some sleep, OK. You’re safe now.”
Rose stared at him a moment longer and then headed toward the bedroom.
A few hours later, Peter scrubbed his hand across his forehead. Farr’s agents hadn’t found anyone in his apartment, but the fact they’d been there made this all suddenly a bit too real.
Somehow, he hadn’t quite believed that Rose was really still in danger. But these people had tracked them somehow. Suddenly he had a need to check on Rose. What if something had happened to her while he was out here talking to Farr? There was a window in the back bedroom – what if these people had tracked them here? Had dragged Rose out and –
Peter jumped to his feet and quickly took the few steps needed to get into the bedroom. Rose had left the door open, and he could hear her deep breathing as he stepped into the room. His shoulders relaxed and he let out a breath. In the faint glow of the lamp light from the lounge room, he could see her curled onto her side, hands tucked under her chin clutching the blankets. A sheaf of her straight, brown hair had fallen across her face as she slept.
Don’t be a creep, he thought to himself. She’s sleeping and you’re going to stare at her?
Peter quietly stepped back out of the room. Before settling back in his chair, he dragged it slightly closer to the bedroom doorway. He could faintly hear her breathing from here. He sank back into his chair with a sigh and trained his eyes back on the window.
