Work Text:
The clock on the wall is messing with Protag. It has to be.
He’s been listening to it tick for hours , but its hand stays frozen, teasingly clicking over one second every once in a lifetime.
Protag sighs for the thousandth time this hour, giving his eyes a rest from the hellspawn that just so happens to tell time, squinting at the popcorn ceiling and playing the familiar game of ‘connect the dots’.
He sees a star, and a little trail behind it.
A shooting star.
A little to the left he sees a circle with a few dots in it,
The moon? Maybe.
The top of the circle slowly fades, creating a semi circle with something sticking out of it,
Kinda like a cereal bowl. He chuckles at that.
The shapes shift in the dark, slowly morphing into…a piece of cake?
Eh, why not.
…cake sounds good. God, he should have eaten before he went to bed.
“Newbie?”
Crap.
Protag shuts his eyes and lays still, hoping that’s enough to at least convince his partner to not risk waking him up.
“…newbie.” Theres a shift in the bed, coworker rolled over, “Come on, you know that won’t work on me.”
Protag doesn’t move, maybe if he just stays still long enough coworker will just…go back to sleep?
(Yeah, right. Like he gives up that easily.)
“Newbieee~” a hand grazes his cheek as coworker slips his glasses off, fully sitting up and reaching over to protags side table, a little clink echos through the room as he sets them down.
The same overly-stubborn-and-cheeky hand places itself next to his head, sliding up into the crook of his neck and tilting his head up as a pair of familiar, slightly chapped lips press against his own. “I love youuuu~”
“…”
“…”
“…I love you too.”
Coworker giggles in triumph as Protag admits defeat, his eyes fluttering open to an, unfortunately, familiar ‘haha I won and you didn’t’ grin.
“Mmng…” Protag stretches out his arms slightly, as much as he can without hitting the bedframe, sprawling his arms above his head, “That was cheap.”
“It worked though.”
“That doesn’t make it not cheap.”
“Doesn’t mean it didn’t work.”
Protag attempts a glare at him but it comes out as more of a squint, evident by the laugh coworker makes at his expense. He brushes a piece of hair out of his eyes, grabbing his face and peppering under his eye with kisses.
“It’s three in the morning love.”
Protag places his hands on coworkers, coworkers kisses move to his nose as he turns his head to place his own kiss in the palm of his hand, “I know.”
“Is it a can’t sleep or no sleep night?”
He attempts to condense his entire hours long agony trip into one word, his voice scratchy as it attempts to claw its way out of protags dry throat,
“Can’t.”
Coworker pauses loving on his partner for a moment, caressing his cheek with his thumb in circles, a rare moment of ‘coworker thinking before he acts’ happening.
A small smile forms on his lips, Protag started to get a little distracted (and his face started to get a little heated) by the fact that, due to a lack of glasses, coworkers face is the only thing he can really see, so he almost misses it when coworker whispers:
“Can I be your blanket?”
“Huh?”
“You said you used to have a weighted blanket- one that helped you sleep-right? Until you had to throw it out-“ Protag stiffens, oh crap wait uh, “or uh- leave it at your old place?”
“…yeah?”
“Well- I’m a pretty big guy! I could weigh you down pretty nicely! And besides-“ he brushes another piece of hair that got misplaced- Protag really needs a haircut - “you’re like a body heater- you’re so warm it’s insane.”
He sits there, waiting for a response. He didn’t really expect Protag to say no- usually him letting him kiss his face was a good sign -but his prolonged silence made him a little giddy with anticipation.
Protag snorts.
He grabs the back of coworkers shoulders, yanking him down into a kiss. Arms wrap around his neck, and Coworker fully shifts himself so that he’s fully above Protag, moving his legs from his side of the bed to the surprisingly warm other side, Protags side.
Protag giggles into the kiss, “That was the weirdest way of asking to cuddle I think I’ve ever heard.”
“Pshh. Still worked tho.”
“Doesn’t make it not weird.”
“Doesn’t make it not work.”
Coworker snuggles into the crook of protags’s neck, sighing contently as a hand weaves into his hair and a kiss is placed into it. Protag starts running his fingers through his hair, humming lovingly.
“How does your hair never get any sleep knots in it?”
“Magic.”
“Ah, of course, I should have known.”
“It’s an honest mistake, love.”
His free arm hugs around coworker, shifting so he’s more flat against his pillow, the newfound pressure on his chest causing a satisfied sigh to be pushed out of his lungs. This really did help.
Maybe he should say that instead of just thinking it.
“Thank you. This honestly feels really nice.”
A little laugh comes out of him as Coworker sneaks a kiss on his neck, “you are very welcome.”
They just sat like that for what felt like nothing at all but forever at the same time, the fresh and…lemony scent? Yeah, lemony scent from coworkers hair breathing through his nose.
the ticking of the clock becomes…not so bad.
“Mmm…I wasn’t kidding about your heater-ness. I love cuddling you.”
“And I love you.”
“Hehe. Love you too, love.”
