Good Friend Hunk

Summary:

Lance convinces Hunk to go and talk to Keith while he listens in the background.

Notes:

Prompt; Eavesdropping to find out if they like you

Work Text:

“Would you please just do it??”

Lance asked, his eyes squinting into horrible puppy eyes. Hunk stared down at them with a frown on his face, his emotions running around over the situation he had gotten himself into. The idea of setting Keith up into some sort of explanation of his feelings, just for Lance to hear, was an insult to the brooding man. Keith had a hard time as it was, what if he found out and hated Hunk for it?

”Why do you want me to ask so badly?”

Hunk asked, fiddling with his fingers. Lance sighed and tilted his head back, groaning slightly.

”I told you, Hunk—I just want to know–“

”You’re not going to make fun of him, are you?”

Hunk asked suspiciously, his eyes narrowing at Lance, obviously not getting the hint that the Latin boy just wanted to know for his own sake. Lance gasped dramatically and shook his head, only making his best friend more suspicious. This could go one of two ways, both of them not being the ideal for Hunk. Lance would figure out who Keith liked, then make fun of him for it-or, Lance would find out who Keith liked, and try to play match maker for the both of them.

The bigger teen sighed and looked beside himself, weighing the options. He looked and Lance and nodded somberly, agreeing to the plan. Lance smiled widely and got a look of gleam in his eyes, clearly excited about Hunks decision. Now all that left to do, was make sure Hunk knew what to say and how to say it so Keith wouldn't get suspicious.

////////////

Hunk had tried his best to remember the things Lance wanted him to ask, but with all his rambling and strangely specific requests, Hunk was thrown into a loop and came out of that conversation with less then he would have liked. Now he was getting nervous, sitting here beside Keith, waiting for him to start the conversation off, maybe give Hunk a reason to ask the questions.

"Why are you acting so strange, Hunk?"

Keith asked, peering over to his friend from the corner of his eyes. He was currently cleaning his blade, which he had just used on a mission not too long ago. Hunk smiled awkwardly and lifted his eyebrows in the attempt to seem surpised by Keiths words.

"Me? Strange? I'm not acting strange!"

Hunk tried to defend himself, his voice going higher pitched than normal. Keith hummed and turned to fully look at the bigger teen, watching over his twitching face and uncertain body language.

"Did you have something you wanted to talk about?"

Keith asked, nervous that Hunk was trying to hide some sort of news. Hunk looked down and fiddled with his fingers, thinking desperately for a subject to come into mind. He peaked out of the corner of his eye to the door across the room, seeing Lances face there with a look of pleading. Hunk looked up and Keith and offered him an awkward smile.

"I uh, i know its a weird question--but do you...miss anyone from home?"

Keith blinked, looking at Hunk with questioning eyes. Of course he missed someone from home, every single one of them did. They had talked about things like this before, family wise and all.

"Yeah, i do. My dad, for one."

Keith didn't need to go into the remembrance that the only way he would see his father again back home on earth, was in a graveyard. Hunk shook his head and chuckled a little.

"No, not like family--but like, you know?"

Keith scrunched up his face, racking his brain. Hunk frowned and continued on the best he could think of, even though he really did not want to throw himself out there.

"I miss this girl from my class."

He said, hoping it would futher make Keith understand. Keith nodded and looked back to his blade, now understanding what Hunk was meaning. This was a personal subject, and something about the timing was somewhat strange--yet Keith hummed and started to speak softly, embarrassment in his tone.

"You mean like a partner?"

Hunk nodded, to which Keith sighed and hyper focused on his shiny blade.

"No, i don't really miss...them."

Keith responded. Hunk raised his eyebrows and watched as Keith started to shrink in on himself, which was something he often did when uncomfortable. Hunk really did not want to continue this, but every time he so much as glanced up to look at his surroundings, Lances head would come into view with a sour look on his face.

"Why not?"

Hunk asked, scooting closer to Keith. The raven haired teen shook his head and shrugged, rubbing away a nonexistent spot on the handle of his blade with his finger.

"I don't have a reason to."

Bingo. At least Hunk considered that worth noting. If he didn't have a reason to miss them, did that mean they were here? Hunk continued on, now wondering about who it was for himself rather than for the rat of a friend he had lurking around. Keith looked over to Hunk, noticing how quiet he had gotten.

"Is it someone here?"

Hunk asked, a smile suddenly on his face. Keiths face went a little pale, while glowing with pink blush. He looked away and stood up, walking away a little bit to give himself some kind of space.

"N-no of course not. I didn't mean to say that he was here."

Hunk got up, not following Keith but staying still.

"He?"

Keith opened his mouth then quickly closed it, shaking his head. He put his sword away and rubbed his face with embarrassment. He obviously hadn't meant to say that, and now he was stuck between a wall of saying 'yes, he.' or 'what??? nooooo' in a very obvious tone of voice. Hunk knew the answer already.

Hunk gasped and went forward to Keith, his eyes glittering for a moment as he looked at the shorter teen.

"Its not me...is it? Because im flattered! B-but i really just like you as a friend."

Hunk tried his best to make it sound as indented, that he really did find it flattering if Keith had a crush on him. Keith wipped around and stared at Hunk with large eyes, shaking his head desperately.

"No! No, uh, not you."

Keith spoke loudly, defensive. Hunk smiled and nodded, trying not to show that it stung a little that he wasn't the one. Before he could ask anything else for even say anything regarding not being the one Keith was talking about, the red lion driver quickly grabbed his jacket from the floor and booked it out of the room, going to his room.

"Good talk, Keith!"

Hunk yelled, furrowing his eyebrows. He sighed and shook his head, already figuring a way to apologize for putting him on the spot like that. Meanwhile, Lance came in with his eyes a little wider than normal and a thick layer of pink covering his ears and cheeks. Hunk looked at him and put a hand on his shoulder.

"Sorry buddy, i guess we'll never know-"

He stopped, looking at the face that his best friend was making. Then it clicked. He? Who else was a 'he' on the ship other than Hunk?

"Oh my god-"

Hunk started, but Lance quickly shushed him, putting a waring hand over is mouth. Hunk nodded and watched as Lance carefully took his hand away, the look of shock still on his face. Hunk grinned widely and grabbed Lance, putting him in a bone crushing hug.

"That's why you wanted me to ask!"

He exclaimed. Lance whined from the lack of air and continued thinking back to the conversation, and the way Keith had ran out straight past him without even noticing. Hunk finally put him down and looked at him with the happiest expression he could possibly muster. Lance smiled weakly.

"Dios mío..."

He mumbled.
