Work Text:

"DAAAAAAAAAAD!!!!!!" Purple's voice carried through the hall. Mango grunted in response, almost choking on his coffee. "Yes?" He called back. In an instant, Purple rushed towards him and enveloped Mango in a huge hug. "Happy Father's Day!" Purple laughed. Mango could swear that he saw the whole universe shining in Purple's sparkling eyes. "Thanks, kiddo!" He ruffles their hair, earning a chuckle from the child. Purple clasps his hand in theirs and drags the man outside. "C'mon! Let's do something special! It is your day after all." Mango could only nod in agreement, having the stupidest grin in the world.

-

The day went on pretty successfully. Purple and Mango went on with their special day with ease, eating corndogs and joking around. They went to a nearby park that Purple used to like when they were a child.

Mango could only imagine how much fun Gold would've had. The child had always wanted a sibling.

Mango didn't even notice he had spaced out until he felt Purple tugging on his arm. "You okay? You look pretty out there for a second." Mango smiled at the younger's concern, it only fueled his love for them even more. "Yeah, I'm fine. Just thinking about....stuff."

Purple didn't question the faraway look in his adoptive father's eyes.

"Okay," Purple said softly.

The two of them then spent the rest of the day chatting about random stuff that came into mind. Purple talked about their friend's antics the time that they had visited the PC. Mango listened intently. Everything seemed to be going well until-

"Oh, sorry, my phone's ringing." Purple fumbled for the device before holding it out for the both of them to see. "Huh, I don't remember adding this number to my contacts." Purple furrowed their eyes. They both went into an alleyway, where it was nice and quiet, away from prying eyes and nosy ears.

"Hi?" They hesitantly spoke up. Mango couldn't tell what had happened, but soon enough Purple's face had gone pale, and his cheerful expression was replaced by fear. "O-Oh, h-hi, Dad." They stammered.

Okay, what?

Dad?

Purple only ever called him 'Dad'.

So, if there was another person that Purple would call 'Dad', and have that fear in their voice, then it must be-

"Purps, breathe, Gimme the phone." Mango reached his hand forward. Purple gave him a wary look. Mango nodded again. "Trust me." He softly whispered. Purple dropped the phone in his hand.

Mango took a deep breath and answered the phone. "Hello, Navy. What brings you here?" Mango replied in a calm voice, though his eyes were icy cold.

He could hear Navy's angry voice cut through his ears, and Mango wanted nothing more than to just erase that wretched man out of existence, but he decided against it.

"Who the hell are you, and what are you doing with my son." Navy growled. His words were slurred, and he seemed to be drunk too. Mango cursed internally. "Oh, do you mean my child? Because if he is your child, you wouldn't have acted so rash and abusive towards them."

"WHO ARE YOU TO TELL ME STUFF HAH?! LEAVE ME AND MY SON ALONE!"

"No. Not if you're going to abuse him again emotionally." Mango cut through Navy, his expression calm and his voice collected. Inside though, there was a war.

-

Purple's eyes widened in shock as very....colourful words left Mango's lips as if it was nothing. Mango never seemed to be the person who even knew about these words, let alone say them.

After what felt like an eternity, Mango hung up the call and turned towards Purple. His eyes were blazing with fury, and he was breathing heavily. "Sorry, you had to hear that kiddo. Let's...let's forget about this, alright?" Purple nodded, a huge grin on his face.

"Hah, yeah, sure."

-

"Dad?"

"Yeah, kiddo?"

"You were awesome out there. I mean, while talking to my dad. You sounded so badass."

Mango laughed. "That was nothing. I'm glad you're feeling better. He won't ever hurt you again. Not on my watch."

Purple blinked at him, then smiled at him with warm, grateful eyes. "Thanks, Dad."

"I love you, flower."

Mango would do anything for this child.
