There were only about 8 minutes left until the end of the 30-minute lunch period at Shiratorizawa, and Tendou hadn’t touched his food. Instead, he’s opted to ramble all period about anything and everything. It wasn’t like he was trying not to eat, but it was more interesting to talk about manga, the crazy thing that had happened in class earlier, or making silly jabs at Semi and Reon, who were sitting right in front of him. It didn’t matter that Semi had begun to tune him out, or even that most of the people at their table weren’t listening to him anymore. He knew at least one person was, and that was enough to continue talking.
At that point, everyone around had more or less finished eating, a contrast to Tendou’s full tray. Ushijima was slightly worried. He knew that if Tendou was deliberately not eating, he wouldn’t have gotten as much food as he did, leading him to believe that his boyfriend had just forgotten about the food in front of him.
Boyfriend.
He still wasn’t completely used to having one of those. The two had gotten together just two weeks prior after Tendou’s spur-of-the-moment confession. He’d simply blurted out that he thought Ushijima was cute and that he really liked him at one point while they were studying. As soon as he’d said it he covered his mouth, apologies on the tip of his tongue, when Ushijima leaned forward and kissed him on the cheek. Tendou, feeling emboldened, turned Ushijima’s face and kissed him on the lips.
Since then, the two decided to start dating, much to Ushijima’s excitement. They decided to wait to tell the team until after the volleyball season ended to not cause any distractions. Things had remained very similar to before (Ushijima couldn’t afford to let his performance slip because of his new relationship) except now Tendou would drag him off to a secluded corner or storage closet to make out with him occasionally.
And that brought them to the present day, the two sitting next to each other with their legs pressed together to be close but not draw suspicion. Ushijima watched fondly as Tendou rambled on about a new manga he was reading.
“Tendou-san, aren’t you going to eat?” Reon tried for the second time. Tendou just waved a hand and continued his story like he hadn’t been interrupted.
Ushijima smiled very slightly. He thought his boyfriend was adorable when he rambled, but he did need to eat. If they couldn’t let their performance change due to their relationship, it definitely couldn’t change over something as trivial as not eating enough. He needed a way to get Tendou’s attention, but to do that he had to get him to stop talking for long enough. Within seconds Ushijima had an idea that would be sure to work.
As Tendou went to start a synopsis of the next chapter in his manga Ushijima put his hand onto the other’s face, turning it towards his own. Before Tendou could react Ushijima surged forward and kissed him, making any words die on his tongue. Everyone at the table went silent, eyes wide. The kiss only lasted for a few seconds, but to everyone, including Ushijima and Tendou, time seemed to slow.
“You need to eat, Satori.” Was all Ushijima said when they separated. Tendou’s face was nearly as red as his hair as he nodded, smiling. He began to finally eat the food on his tray that had now gotten cold.
“…Okay, what the hell?” Semi asked, breaking the silence that had followed.
“What?”
“Ushijima-san you can’t just- kiss somebody like that!”
“Why not?”
Semi paused, confusion evident on his face. “Well- because- you-“ He sputtered. Shirabu laughed from down the table.
“Are you two dating?” Reon asked finally.
Tendou shot Ushijima a silent glance, asking if he was sure. The quick look Ushijima did back stated simply: yes.
Tendou smiled, turning his attention back to Reon and nodding.
“I knew it!” Goshiki exclaimed.
“About time. Since when Tendou-san?” Shirabu asked.
“Two weeks,” Ushijima answered for him, still wanting his boyfriend to eat more.
“Why haven’t you said anything?” Semi asked.
“We were going to wait until the end of the volleyball season to tell anybody. To avoid distractions.”
“So you decide to kiss him in the middle of the cafeteria?”
“…Perhaps I didn’t think that completely through,” Ushijima said after a pause.
“You could have grabbed my hand or something, it would have had a similar effect Wakatoshi-kun,” Tendou said, laughing.
“You likely would have just brushed it off. Besides, kissing you was more enjoyable.”
“Ugh, gross,” Semi mumbled. Tendou laughed harder, but the blush was creeping back up his face. He leaned over onto Ushijima’s shoulder. Ushijima smiled down at Tendou, lacing their hands together.
