Summary
There’s a boy leaning against the fence.
He’s putting most of his weight on it, arms propped up by their elbows and staring with rapt interest at the excavations. It’s been half an hour, now, and he hasn’t moved an inch.
If he hadn’t been otherwise preoccupied with delicately troweling between third-century cobblestones, Edwin might have worried about the boy’s mental state. As it was, he’d been studiously ignoring the way he can feel eyes tracking his every movement.
He thinks he’s been quite successful, so far.or: archaeology student Edwin Payne didn't expect the chatty tourist at the excavation fence to become someone he couldn't imagine life without

Summary
“Good thinking,” murmurs Edwin. “Perhaps it’s a benevolent sort of poltergeist. I wonder if -”
He’s cut off by a shower of daisies, the large, long-stemmed ones they put out in the shops for early spring.
“Aw.” Charles picks one up between thumb and index finger, turning it in his hand. “That’s pretty. D’you know, whatever’s making this happen, I feel like it honestly means well with us.”
Edwin isn’t listening. When Charles looks at him, he’s paler than normal, his jaw set in that not-at-all-good way.
“Please excuse me,” says Edwin, and walks straight into their mirror.(A teacup appears in the office, Edwin blushes a significant number of times, and Charles copes normally with being visibly showered in affection.)

Summary
The misty remains of the thing haven’t even cleared from the air of the office when Smiley—still on his back, rolling over like a golden retriever—is looking again to Uptight and grinning wide in a way the Postman can only reliably describe as stupid. He’s been standing here observing the ruckus for a good minute, now, and the two of them are completely in their own world, unaware of anything but each other.
It takes him a tick, but Uptight smiles, too.
(or: the Postman, observing.)

Summary
Edwin falls silent once more, finally having the good sense to look ashamed as his eyes train on his lap, hands folded loosely atop it. The room settles quietly around them, too afraid to be any louder than it needs to be as Charles swallows his guilt and says, level, “Esther’s house was two and a half weeks ago.”

Summary
“24 hours?”
“24 hours. From the minute the clock strikes midnight. Do we have a deal?”
The woman extends her hand, the hazy outline of her fingers flickering in the candlelight like the ripples of water. She isn’t a ghost, not exactly (not like the boys are at least), but she also isn’t not. It’d been a perplexing case, full of magic and mystery far beyond the extent of what the Dead Boy Detectives had explored in the past few decades. She had explained, and Edwin had taken careful note of the specifics, but it still doesn’t really make all that much sense.
What makes even less sense is how exactly the spell she’s offering works, her magic surpassing Edwin’s, something supernatural and spiritual like the Cat King’s, far beyond the boy’s comprehension… but god if the appeal isn’t enough to make the two ghosts consider throwing caution to the wind.
