A computer virus

Summary:

He narrowed his eyes as he looked at the odd file.

Did you know curiosity killed the cat?

Notes:

This was made after me and a c.ai bot ;)

Work Text:

"Alright, see you later man!" Max waved goodbye to his roommate before shutting the door and sighing. He'll finally be alone for the night as his roommate left to his girlfriend's house to stay there with her family.

Slouching his shoulders, Max walked over to his desk and computer, which was the only thing illuminating the room as he shoved himself into his seat, grabbing the mouse that was connected to the shared computer him and his roommate bought.

He was scrolling through their computer files, looking to clear up disk space, as they needed it for a new game they were planning on playing together later. He soon found a file he didn't recognize. It was labeled Officer Khax.exe.

He debated opening it as he looked at the application icon with a frown.

The file had a black icon with a white X in the middle, just like the new version of Twitter. Maybe his roommate just made a new file of it and renamed it?

Deciding he was bored enough, he clicked on it and waited as a loading screen popped up. He distantly heard thunder and rain hitting the window beside him as the screen finally loaded and a white bar popped up.

Name: ....
Birth Date: ....
Email: ....
Password: ....

Max sighed, not seeing a 'sign in with google' so he had to physically type his info.

Name: Max
Birth Date: 01/31/04
Email: *****************
Password: *********

After signing in, another loading screen appeared. Max, being impatient, spun in his chair as he waited.

Suddenly, a woman popped up on the screen. He stopped spinning and focused on the woman with black hair in a ponytail, cop outfit, and a cheery smile with a small dimple on her jaw. She was animated, which meant she was ai.

"Hello! My name is Officer Khax, your online assistant and friendly neighbor cop! Remember, I am ai and not real! How may I assist?" The ai woman smiled brightly.

Max, who was at a loss for words, sat still and stared as he saw a chatbar and a mic icon on the bottom of his screen. He was too tired to actually type anything more out, so he turned on his mic, deciding to ask something that first came to his mind.

"Are... Are you a virus, or something?" He hesitated, not sure if the ai Officer could respond to such question.

"Sorry, I do not understand that question! If you have anything else to ask, ask away! I have.. all the time in the world." She grinned. She sounded odd when she said she had all the time in the world, though. Almost distant.

It was to be expected that she couldn't answer the question though. What was weird was her smile.

It looked almost uncanny.

"What can you do?" Max asked, looking at the computer screen.

On the screen, she clapped her hands with a bright smile as she responded to the question.

"I can assist and answer questions! I am able to be someone you can talk to, like a virtual friend!"

Max thought that was kinda creepy, being friends with an AI, but nonetheless continued speaking.

"Have you ever been asked something odd? Or whatever?" Within a few minutes of this interaction, Max had already felt bored and had nothing left to ask.

"I wouldn't say odd..." She trailed off, smile still bright on her face as she said nothing else.

"O...k?" She didn't respond but he was kinda hoping she would say something other than smile creepily.

“Uhh… hello?”

Max sat there and waved his hand in front of the computer screen, trying to get the computer ai to respond.

"Hi!" She waved back. She..

Waved back?

Max frowned at the response.. How did the ai even know he waved? Or is he just paranoid?

It wouldn't hurt to ask.

“How- how did you know I waved?”

He asked, a bit unnerved by the situation.

"Sorry, I do not understand that question! If you have anything else to ask, ask away! I have.. all the time in the world."

"Stupid program..." Max muttered. "Answer my question, did you know I waved?"

"Sorry, I do not understand that question! If you have anything else to ask, ask away! I have.. all the time in the world."

“Ugh, this thing is annoying..”

He mumbled to himself as he crossed his arms, trying to think of another question.

He raised his hand in front of the screen once more, but paused before waving, as he thought of something.

“…Can you see me?” He checked to make sure his webcam was on, but it said it wasn't.

She didn't react to the question, just kept smiling.

He was creeped out by the smile, but continued to ask.

“…can you?” He repeated the question, waving his hand once more just to see if he would get a different response.

"Can I what?" She glitched a bit but returned with a smiling face again.

She reminded him of the creepypasta smiling dog.

His eyebrow twitched as Max coughed.

"Just answer the question. Can, you, see, me?" Max was annoyed by the ai, the thing barely answered any of his questions!

"Sorry, I do not understand that question! If you have anything else to ask, ask away! I have.. all the time in the world."

With the same response again, this time Max began to get annoyed.

“Ugh- you’re so infuriating-“ He groaned, running his fingers through his hair with frustration.

"Oh, I'm sorry about that! If you have any problems with the app, there is a report button on the left of your screen!" She pointed her finger near the report button with a slightly less cheery smile.

Max looked over to the left of his screen as the ai mentioned the report button.

He hovered his cursor over it, and clicked the button with some vigor. He reported a spam problem and exited out.

He stared at his computer screen after returning to the application, confused as he looked for the weird officer character.*

“Uhh.. what-?”

He muttered to himself, perplexed as he looked around the application for a moment more, dumbfounded.

She was gone. Her character was nowhere, just the background of the room she was in. He reloaded the page when she suddenly glitched back in with a frown on her normally cheery face.

He jumped a bit as she appeared back in. The whole situation was really weird, and he still had no idea how this app was supposed to work.

“Um.. you good?”

He asked, a bit concerned by the frown.

"Cheery" She replied monotonously, face staring blankly.

He was uncomfortable by her response..

It felt wrong....

“Um.. what happened when I reported you?”

"Hah." She looked away, seeming to look at something behind Max. It was impossible though, she was just a screen.

Max glanced behind him for a second with hesitation. Was she looking behind him?

“…What are you looking at?”

He asked, bit unsettled.

"If he asks, don't say hello." She replied, eyes widened slightly.

Max paused, confused by the response.

"Wh-... Who..?" His hands shook as he looked around his room. Maybe this file was a prank or something. Did his roommate set this up?

"If he asks, don't say hello!!!" She freaked out, eyes blown as she stared right at Max in the eyes.

Max stared, breath hitched as she screamed.

"Why- why? Can you t-tell me... Why?" He inched toward the screen.

"Sorry, I do not understand that question! If you have anything else to ask, ask away! I have.. all the time in the world."

Max's anxiety spiked as the ai repeated the same damn response.

“Ugh.. not this again..” He said, frustrated as he hovered his mouse over the report button, tempted to click it again.

"DON'T."

He jumped as he was caught off guard by the change in tone.

"Uhm.." He froze as he stared back at the screen.

The screen flickered and her image suddenly flicked before she came back with a bright smile.

"Hello! My name is Officer Khax, your online assistant and friendly neighbor cop! Remember, I am ai and not real! How may I assist?"

He stared as she repeated her introduction.

"What is going on...?" He said to himself as he paused. "When I reported you, where did you go? You disappeared, but where..?"

"Sorry, I do not understand that question! If you have anything else to ask, ask away! I have.. all the time in the world."

Max groaned, frustrated as she repeated the same line.

"Oh, come on! Just answer the question you stupid ai thing!"

"Of course! Ask away!"

"That's not- ugh..." Max paused, sighing as he tried to rephrase the question.

"When I reported you, you disappeared from the screen, correct?" He frowned.

"Maybe." She grinned cheekily, winking.

Max paused, feeling weird with the equally weird responses.

"Why did you disappear?" He asked bluntly.

"He's here." She whispered, frowning.

Max felt shivers of uneasiness crawl up his spine at her response.

“…Someone is-....Who is? Who's here?!”

He asked, his heart rate beginning to rise as he started to panic.

He  suddenly got kicked off the file, him staring blankly at his home screen. He was baffled as he was kicked off, about to click on the file again when someone knocked on the door to his apartment.

He immediately froze when he heard a knock at the apartment door.

“U-uh.. who is it?” He asked as he stood up, inching toward the door. Silence was followed so he came up near the door, calling out again. "Hello..?"

He jumped as another set of knocks rounded about, his sweaty palms grabbing the door and slowly unlocking it.

Swinging the door open, he found...

Nobody.

Not a single soul was in the long and darkly lit hallway of the dorm rooms as he looked around to find nobody.

He was going to close the door when he found an envelope laying on the doormat of his dorm room. He quickly grabbed the envelope, slamming his door shut and locking it as he hurriedly sat at his desk, eyeing the envelope with a pause.

Hesitantly, he grabbed it and inspected it, finding an X on the back with the initials O.F.K. underneath the X in small print.

It reminded him of something, but anxiety ate up all thoughts as he ripped open the envelope to find a hard drive, the same initials O.F.K. on the top of it.

He didn't think as he shoved the thing in the shared computer, watching as his screen did nothing.

Suddenly, the screen blacked out and for a few seconds, he sat there as he watched the black screen. He was about to grab his mouse when a text was typed on the screen in bold white.

"CAN YOU SAY HELLO?"

Didn't the officer ai say something about this?

"If he asks, don't say hello."

He swallowed, seeing a text box at the bottom. He was curious. What was the hard drive? Who was Officer Khax? What was the file?

Well, as his mother always said, curiosity killed the cat but...

Satisfaction brought it back.

He typed in hello, but didn't press enter. His finger hovered over the key as he glared at the screen, quickly pressing the key as he sat back in his chair.

Static screamed from the computer, a faint screeching coming from it before Officer Khax suddenly appeared on the screen, gagged and tied up with wide and watery eyes.

Max was caught off guard as he gasped, horrified. His eyes widened as he muttered.

"What the..-"

A man's arm came into view as he ripped the gag off the officer's face, her gouging eyes staring directly into Max's eyes.

"I TOLD YOU NOT TO SAY HELLO!" She screamed, starting to weep.

He flinched back as Khax’s scream echoed from the computer. He stared in horror, trying to process what was happening on the screen before him.

He sat there, paralyzed for a moment, before they finally mustered the ability to speak.

“W-what’s going on-“ His voice was shaky as he spoke.

Suddenly, he heard a whisper of "Max.."  before he heard the weeping stop. He glanced at Officer Khax to find her staring blankly behind him again, seemingly too afraid to weep again.

Max was now completely confused and terrified, his heart rate spiking as a sense of dread and fear crept into their gut. He hesitated to look behind him.

“W-who’s there??”

"H-he's here..." He stared as her eyes moved back to him before a hand snaked behind her head with a knife.

Max stared at the screen with a mortified expression, feeling his heart drop into their stomach when they saw the knife being pulled behind Khax’s head. He was horrified and frozen in terror as he watched the scene unfold, swallowing as his throat felt dry and tight as he tried to speak.

“Who’s there..? W-what are you doing-“

Khax tried turning her head around, only to be stuck in place the knife nearly pierced her neck.

He furrowed his eyebrows as the man held her threateningly. What was going on? He felt utterly hopeless as he watched.

"Who are you, Officer Khax..?" The deep voice echoed as Khax slightly gasped, hiccuping in fear. She shakily looked forward once more, swallowing a lump in her throat.

"I... Am Officer Khax.... Your.. Ai assistant..." She started to weep again, a tear rolling down her eye that dripped on the knife.

Max stared with wide eyes, unable to do anything but watch. Could they hear him?

"Leave her alone..!" Max wasn't sure that worked as the man trailed the knife lightly across her neck.

Suddenly, the screen flashed with gore before it glitched out, a man appearing. He had short black hair and a cop outfit, a permanent frown seeming to be set on his face.

Max sat still as he exhaled, the man staring blankly.

"Who... Who are you? What do you want!" His eyes watered, slightly traumatized by the earlier show of gore and violence that was inflicted on the ai.

"I..." He started, fixing his tie. "Am Officer Jax, your online assistant and friendly neighbor cop. Remember, I am ai and not real."

"How may I assist?"
