this is also not beta read, so sorry if there are some pretty choppy parts!

happy (late) birthday hinata!

Work Text:

Kageyama gets out of the taxi, sweat lining the top of his head.

It was a blisteringly hot evening and it just had to be the day that Hinata was coming back, inciting Yachi to suggest a meetup for the five of them. None of them could ever say no to Yachi, all of them having a soft spot for their former manager.

He didn’t know the details of why Hinata was out of town, just knowing it was something about a magazine shoot. It was the volleyball off season and both of them were back in Japan for a bit, before having to go back to their respective leagues in a couple of weeks.

He had no recollection of when it became a tradition for all five of them to start hanging out. They had all been quite close in their high school years, only to break contact during the years after. As always, it had been Yachi that had instigated their first dinner in a while, simply lighting up their dormant group chat with a “ How is everyone?”

Said group chat lit up Kageyama’s phone, making him pause before entering the small restaurant that Yachi had picked out.

Hinata

Sorry guys, I think I’ll be a bit late! My moms making me take photos with our neighbors lol

Yachi

No worries!

Yamaguchi

Say hi to your mom for me!

Tsukishima

Take as much time as you need! Like seriously!

The last message seemed nice, but knowing Tsukishima it was probably sent with a sort of sarcastic intent that Kageyama couldn’t pick up through text.

He looked back at Hinata’s text and sighed, his chest tightening. Kageyama wasn’t an idiot. He might have been completely and utterly shit with feelings in middle school, but years and years of setting for people, learning to read their emotions and their state on court, he’s learned a thing or two. More than anything, he’s learned how to read himself better, to pick up on what he’s feeling and what that means to others.

If there’s one thing he knows for sure, it’s that he is undeniably in love with Hinata.

He had never been aware of it in high school, volleyball taking up so much of his head. Hinata had always been associated with the sport, both of them melding into one another. They couldn’t have been separated if they had tried. Sometime along the way, their third year he thinks, he started feeling something more. Something a tad bit separate than what he was used to. He started becoming cognitively aware of things that really had no connection to volleyball. Hinata’s scent. His arms. His hair. His skin. His voice. Just Hinata.

Throughout their year, he began to have these little fireworks of infatuation, going off in his head like pop rocks. At that point in his life, he was, unfortunately, not aware of just how much he had liked the boy, pushing it off as some sort of volleyball awareness that he had developed after all their years of working together.

It wasn’t until Hinata left for Brazil that Kageyama realized it was not that. He still played volleyball. In fact, volleyball was all he was doing. He couldn’t avoid it and he inevitably had to partner with another spiker. But those feelings still stuck on to him, popping in his head every now and then when he saw something that reminded him of Hinata.

This was more than some crazy sixth sense. This was a crush. Kageyama knew that much.

The way he realized it had also been pretty normal. No intense slow motion or dramatic wind like he had always seen in Miwa’s K-Dramas.

It was a sweltering summer day and Kageyama felt like he was going to be a puddle in minutes. He was out with his team and had just finished dinner before coming out of the restaurant and being blown away. He had looked up at the sky, the summer sunset bouncing along buildings all over the city skyline. It bathed everything in a sort of orangeish, red, glow that made the whole city shine. It was a beautiful sunset, the whole team taking out their phones and taking photos, eager to send it to their partners or post it on their story. But Kageyama couldn’t move. The only thought in his mind was Hinata. It seemed cliche in his head, borderline stupid. But it was an undeniable fact. The sun set at night. Gravity sticks things to the earth. He liked Hinata. Undeniable.

His feelings only seemed to multiply once Hinata came back to Japan. Before, it had been a soft thrum in the back of his head. Now, it was a loud-speaker cranked to max power. You would have to be blind to not see that Hinata had grown to be incredibly handsome. Kageyama had always been keenly aware Hinata was not an ugly dude, even garnering a bucket load of confessions in their third year. This was different, however, from an innocent high school charm.

There was no doubt in Kageyama’s mind that Hinata was one of the hottest men he had ever laid his eyes on.

His time in Brazil had made him incredibly muscular, any shirt he wore melding to his shoulders. His skin had developed an incredible tan, something that just made his hair stand out more. Every step he took exuded confidence, his experience with sand volleyball giving him the necessary push to believe that he could do anything if he tried. His personality, however, didn’t change much. Hinata was simply Hinata, just with his handsomeness spiked to infinity. He acted the same around Kageyama, teasing him and fighting with him over menial issues, but he just gave off this mature, experienced vibe that drove Kageyama off the wall. There were times where he would feel like an awestruck kouhai, staring in wonder at a senior. He just seemed so cool for lack of other terms.

Whatever this new Hinata was, combined with Kageyama’s crush from highschool, tipped him over the edge. He found himself thinking about Hinata constantly, wondering stupid, childish things like if he ate or what he was doing. Everytime he looked at something that reminded him of Hinata, he could feel warmth migrate across his face, his ears probably turning a bright red. If he ever found himself looking at any media containing Hinata, he would unconsciously put on this dopey grin, smiling at himself before snapping out of it and slapping himself.

There were also times that made Kageyama just feel the need for Hinata, like he was missing a part of himself. One instance had been at a dinner where it was just him, Yachi, Yamaguchi, and Tsukishima, Hinata having to do some interview. They had just finished eating some barbecue and all had been hit with some food coma symptoms, the drinks they had making everyone feel a bit sleepy. Yachi had gone to the bathroom and he had been left with Tsukishima and Yamaguchi, quietly talking about something across from him. As Kageyama drowsily looked at them, he could feel his brain spark in a familiar way. They were both leaning their hands, looking at each other with a sort of affection that Kageyama immediately became jealous of. Both of them were quietly speaking, all hush hush over something in their own world. Yamaguchi giggled at something Tsukishima said, lightly shoving him in response. Tsukishima only let out a small chuckle, a flush and a small smile adorning his face as he looked at the other man.

Kageyama had always known what he wanted. He always knew what food he wanted to eat, how he liked to play volleyball, or what clothes he wanted to wear. That’s just how he was. He knew he wanted what Tsukishima and Yamaguchi had. He wanted it with Hinata. He yeared for it. It was undeniable.

It all made Kageyama incredibly sure that he was, in fact, in love with Hinata. The problem was…what does he do with that information?

He had told Yachi, physically unable to hold back something like this. She had merely chuckled, holding back a bigger laugh with her hand on her mouth.

“Congrats, Kageyama! You are officially the last person to know!” she exclaimed, a teasing smile on her face. “Well, except Hinata.”

Kageyama had been shocked at the fact he was so readable, a little bit concerned as to what that would bode for his setting career, but tried to stay on the subject at hand.

“So, how do I get him to know?” he asked.

She gave him a deadpan look. She looked surprised that Kageyama had even asked her a question like that.

“You tell him, of course.”

Kageyama’s heart stopped.

No way in hell that was happening. He was quick to deny it and even quicker to change the subject, asking Yachi about how her work was going. Yachi had looked at him a bit suspiciously, but had heeded in his desperation, starting to talk about some guy who was a douche at her office.

She clearly hadn’t forgotten, howerever. The next time Kageyama showed up to one of their gatherings, he was greeted by Yamaguchi and Tsukishima giving him a shit-eating grin, both of them looking a tad bit psychotic.

And Ushiwaka called him a monster.

“So Hinata, huh?” Tsukishima had started, his eyes jeering with excitement, as if he was a dog with a new play toy.

“You know everyone knew right?” Yamaguchi added, his innocent face contrasting with the teasing lilt in his words. To the side of him, Yachi only stared at Kageyama, a cheeky smile on her face as she observed him.

Kageyama sighed. “I am aware. Also, I am never EVER telling you ANYTHING again Yachi!”

The three of them started laughing, pointing at Kageyama and holding their stomachs as they laughed at his misfortune.

Kageyama’s eye twitched. “You assholes! Tell me what I have to do about it!” he yelled, his voice only slightly - at least what he thought - above room level.

“What do you have to do about what?”

Hinata had finally shown up and the subject was shelved for that day, the three devils quickly regaining composure and Yachi making some excuse.

It was not the end of Kageyama’s misery, though. Hinata always seemed to run late to these dinners, meaning it would be minutes - though it felt like hours - of Kageyama getting bombarded with suggestions of confessions, questions about feelings, and being teased about the whole thing. They would attack with all of this, only for Kageyama to dodge everything.

He couldn’t confess. He just couldn’t risk what they had. It was cliche he knew that. But just because it was cliche, doesn’t mean it wasn’t the truth.

Which is why when he presently walks into the restaurant and sees the three of them already there, he can only sigh, waiting for Hinata to arrive.

He sits down, expecting a bombarding amount of voices at the same time, only to receive nothing. They are all talking to each other when he gets to their booth, each one of them greeting him like usual. Tsukishima and Yachi fall back into their conversation while Yamaguchi places his attention on Kageyama, asking him about his day and what he has done the past week. As Kageyama starts talking, he has Yamaguchi’s attention, seeing no teasing eyes or anticipatory smile. There’s no mention of his feelings or confessing. It’s almost like they are pre-Kageyama feeling enlightenment.

All of sudden, in the middle of Yamaguchi telling Kageyama a story about his work, he slams his hands on the table, his eyes wide with remembrance.

“GUYS! Oh my gosh, I can’t believe I forgot! You will never guess who I met up with yesterday,” he exclaimed, a smile wide on his face as he looked at each of them. Tsukishima and Yachi looked at him, their conversation abandoned. “Miya Osamu.”

Kageyama’s face contorted. “Atsumu’s brother? Why did you meet up with him?”

“We met each other at the MSBY V. Adlers game and just became friends! We always send each other tiktoks, but never had time to meet up until last week!” Yamaguchi replied, his voice coming down to a whisper as he continued. “But guess what he told me? You guys have to promise to not tell anyone!”

Everyone promised, immediately nodding. They had learned quite early into their friendship that each and everyone of them, Tsukishima included, were gossip fiends, Tsukishima simply being a lot more subtle about it. No one could resist the pull of good old gossip.

“Apparently, up until Atsumu joined MSBY and started talking to Sakusa, he had a raging, and I mean RAGING crush on Hinata!” Yamaguchi revealed, his eyes wide with excitement.

Kageyama could feel his eyes widen. “ NO way. Absolutely not. That was impossible. How? HOW?” was all he could think, his mind racing while his face was frozen. He had fucking played with Atsumu multiple times in that period of time. How had he never noticed?

Yachi gasped, her hands covering mouth in shock. Tsukshima’s eyes widened before they settled in thought.

“That would explain why he always seemed to get this weird look when he played us,” he replied, cooly and calmly.

Yamaguchi eagerly nodded. “According to Osamu, everytime Inarizaki played us, it was always followed with Atsumu pining and whining about Hinata. Like I’m being so for real, he would gush for hours about Hinata’s arms and jumps and his smile. It would drive Osamu up the wall!”

Kageyama flushed at this news. There had been various times where he had similar thoughts throughout his high school career, his mind racing and his brain frying over Hinata’s arms. Of course back then, Kageyama had justified himself by saying he was looking at Hinata’s progress in muscle accumulation. Good god, he had been an oblivious high schooler.

Tsukishima cleared his throat, everyone’s eyes switching from Yamaguchi to him. “That reminds me of that thing Kuroo once told me, though I don’t think I told any of you.” He paused for dramatic effect. He could only last a few seconds before Yamaguchi smacked him and Yachi yelled at him, making him startle and flinch. “Fine, fine! Jeez. According to Kuroo, there had been a period of time while we were in high school where Kenma had a huge crush on him. Not only-”

Kageyama had been taking a drink of water only to choke on it. He could feel his throat burning as he swallowed it, only to yell, “WHAT?!”

Tsukishima’s face instantly darkened, a clear indicator for Kageyama to know that he had spoken much too loud. With a nasty side eye, he cleared his throat. “As I was saying before, Kageyama forgot how to behave in public, it wasn’t just Kenma,” he had this almost menacing look in his eye as he stared straight at Kageyama. “Apparently, there was at least one person on each team that had some sort of infatuation with him. Every training camp. All three years.”

Yamaguchi’s mouth dropped and Yachi’s gasp probably could be heard down the block. An odd feeling creeped up Kageyama’s throat, a tightness making it slightly difficult to breathe. Why was Kageyama’s mind running at a million miles an hour? Why did his head feel much more warm than it was a few minutes ago? Hinata was an amazing person in high school, not to mention inviting and warm. It made sense that so many people had some sort of romantic feelings towards him. It was just pure logic at play.

So then why was his brain cheating his ability to accept said logic? What was this feeling?

Yamaguchi’s voice broke him out of his trance. “Damn, I guess Hinata was a heartthrob back then.”

Yachi tapped her hand on the table, shaking her head vigorously. “Not just then! My friend works at this marketing firm in Brazil for Hinata’s team. I met her when we went to meet Hinata a couple years ago! Actually funny story about that, it was during this pole dancing contest or something like that and there was this really pretty girl and I was going to get her number but then there was this bird-”

“YACHI!” all of them interrupted, though Yamaguchi made a mental note to ask her later. He had the gossip disease worse than any of them.

“OH yes, yes sorry guys! Anyway, Hinata is probably one of their most popular players, if not the most. Apparently they are constantly bombarded with requests for him for interviews, magazines, even reality shows. Like he is the hearthrobiest of heartthrobs. And,” she paused, coming close to the group, all of them leaning in with her. “There are requests for him to be in SWIMSUIT ADS. And you won’t believe-”

Kageyama could feel his own flush creep up, the back of his neck probably becoming hot to the touch.

Swimsuit ads? The thought of it made him want to throw up, but like in a good way? He couldn’t explain it, his brain felt like it was on fire.

Oh god swimsuit ads? Kageyama had remembered the first time he had seen Hinata’s body in a while, his brain going crazy at the memory. It had been during their group trip to Brazil, going to a beach volleyball tourney just to watch. Of course, Hinata couldn’t help but get dragged into a random 2v2, the infamous Ninja Shoyo being impossible to avoid.

He had been wearing a white tank top, the color flush against Hinata’s tanned skin. He wore regular black shorts, his thighs ridiculously big as they cut through the sand. Every single fiber of muscle flexed when he hit the ball, and with it Kageyama remembered losing his breath at every hit. There had come a point where the tank top had been doing nothing, and Hinata just slid it off, throwing it to the side. Kageyama remembered the screams he heard that day, everyone around him going crazy at the sight of Hinata’s chest and abs. They were incredibly defined, and despite the slight lightness compared to his arms, they looked deep, contracting and being emphasized during every hit. With every pause, Hinata would look around him, basking in the attention. He would smile his signature smile, encouraging the audience to cheer louder. If he got a hit, he would let out a visceral yell, sliding in the sand rockstar style, the audience yelling in unison. His thighs would become emphasized and Kageyama faintly remembered acknowledging that they were at least the size of his head. It had all made Kageyama’s head spin at the time, having to blame the sun when asked about it.

OH god, swimsuit ads.

He could hear his head throbbing. From a distance he could hear Yachi's fuzzy voice, detailing the further details. He felt a little bit dizzy.

“Hellooooo. Earth to Kageyama,” Yamaguchi softly said, his hands waving in front of Kageyama’s eyes.

Kageyama flinched, out of his stupor. He looked at each of them, all of them looking at him.

“Are you okay, Kageyama?” Yachi asked, her eyes visibly concerned.

Kageyama nodded, before stopping and scanning everyone. This whole conversation seemed odd. It was ticking off some alerts in his mind. “What is this? What is going on?” he questioned, his eyes naturally regressing to a glare of some sort.

They all slightly froze, akin to a deer in headlights, Yamaguchi snapping out of it first.

He sighed before putting his head on his hand, looking at Kageyama with an exasperated expression on his face. “It was us trying to get you to realize that Hinata is a heartthrob. And that he has options. It is a bit backhanded, I will admit, but you need to realize that Hinata is not someone who is in a scarcity of people who value his presence and are not scared to show it.” He got this look as he spoke. It was what Kageyama imagined predators had when they had an easy target. “If you do not realize this, Hinata has no reason to even give you a second of his time,” he finished, his eyes icy and intense. He looked at Kageyama for a second and then blinked, before grabbing his water and looking back at the menu, leaving the three other people to look at him blankly. In his peripheral, he could see Tsukishima let out a low breath before looking at Yachi, the latter shrugging.

Kageyama took a few seconds to catch up. Yamaguchi was right. He knew Yamaguchi was right. He needed to tell Hinata. He needed to. It was imperative. Unavoidable.

“Hey guys!”

It felt like Kageyama’s heart had known who the voice was before he even spoke. His heart started to pick up, his conviction from before hammering against his head. He could feel his throat start to dry up, his mouth tasting like cactus. He had been sitting on the side of the booth that did not get any exposure to the entrance, an empty slot next to him saved for Hinata, with Yachi sitting on the front of the table and Tsukishima and Yamaguchi sitting on the other side of Kageyama and Hianta. He was the last one to see him. There he was. In all of his glory.

Mr. Heartthrob himself.

Everyone gave their greetings, with Yachi smiling and holding onto Hinata’s arm as he sat down. At some point, Hinata had become a quasi older brother for Yachi, often acting as her bodyguard during their training camps. It had made them much closer, enough that casual touch was common for them. He had helped her grow a lot, become more confident in herself.

Tsukishima gave him a small nod. People never thought it would be possible for Tsukishima and Hinata to be close, their personalities quite different. It had taken time and perseverance, on Hinata’s part, for them to become as friendly as they were right now. It was due to Hinata’s influence that Tsukishima decided to join the Sendai Frogs.

Yamaguchi dapped him up with a laugh, Hinata reciprocating with a laugh of his own. Yamaguchi and Hinata had always been friendly, never that close but never having any animosity. They had developed a bond during their final year, Yamaguchi often being lifted up by Hinata’s optimism and vice versa. He had allowed Yamaguchi to realize that he had the ability to be more than someone on the sideline. That he had the ability to be more if he just tried.

Hinata had meant more than he realized to every single one of them. And they knew, beyond any reasonable doubt, that Kageyama was made for him. They were made for each other. Summer and Winter. Yin and Yang. Opposites, but soulmates nonetheless. It was an undeniable fact.

As he sat down, he looked at Kageyama, his already wide grin turning to one of teasing and fun. Oh god he looked beautiful, his skin all glowy from the sunset. “Wooooahhh Kageyama! What’s wrong with you? You look like you just saw a ghost!”

It was now or never.

Yamaguchi cleared his throat, getting Hinata’s attention, pouring him a glass of water to distract him from Kageyama. “Oh you know him! Always thinking about something crazy! He was talking about some volleyball thing before you came. Do you know who I met a couple days ago? It was-

“GO OUT WITH ME HINATA!”

Everyone froze. Kagyeama looked incredibly fierce, staring at Hinata with conviction. Next to him, Hinata choked on his water, much like Kageyama had done a few minutes before.

“WHAT?!” he yelled, his hands coming up to wipe the excess water from his mouth.

Across from him, Tsukishima slammed on the table, groaned and stood up. “OH god! These idiots have absolutely NO social awareness. C’mon Yamaguchi. You too, Yachi. If we stay here through them piecing it together we might die of stupidity.” He slid out of the booth, waiting for Yamaguchi. The latter however, was not moving, seemingly still frozen from Kageyama’s outburst. Tsusksihima rolled his eyes, leaned over, and tapped him on his shoulder, flinching when Yamaguchi flinched, his loss of balance causing him to faceplant into the seat cushion.

Tsukishima's eyes widened. He was already infected by their monster dose of stupid disease. He quickly pulled Yamaguchi out of the booth, dragging him to the door despite the latter’s protest to want to see the result. Yachi followed behind, vigorously bowing at the other guests as they left. This was yet another restaurant that they were no longer welcome at. Yachi would need to add it to the list.

That left Hinata and Kageyama staring at each other, some sort of hypnosis making everyone around them invisible.

“What the hell are you talking about Kageyama?” Hinata asked, his voice filled with some sort of uncertainty that Kageyama hated. “Are you pulling a prank on me?”

Kageyama’s eyes widened, his neck shaking before he cognitively told it to. How could he think that? Never in a hundred years did Kageyama think that he would say that. But that was beyond the point. Now was now. And Kageyama needed to confess. He took a deep breath.

“No, no, no of course not. No, Hinata,” he started, twisting himself so he was facing Hinata. Hinata looked back at him, his eyebrows crossed in confusion. “I. I- I think. No, I know. Hinata, I know without any doubt, that I am in love with you.”

Hinata’s eyes lifted and his jaw dropped slightly. He slowly turned to face Kageyama the same way, his leg lifting up to the seat cushion, their knees touching. Kageyama’s vision seemed to laser in and his senses heightened. The world around them became fuzzy as he looked at the other man.

He took a deep breath before continuing. “Hinata, I know it sounds weird and I know maybe it sounds stupid. But I don’t think I can continue to lie to myself. I find myself thinking about you wherever I go. Whatever I do, I want to do with you. Whatever I eat, I want to eat it with you. When I’m around you, it feels like the whole world just sets into place. Just like a little click. Everyday I think about you and what my life has led up to you, I realize it’s all thanks to you. You gave me a chance. You helped me grow back in highschool. Whatever I am, any part of me, any figment of who I have become, it’s all you. I know I haven’t been the best at showing appreciation, or just understanding what it means to feel for someone. For someone to take up all of my thoughts. But now I have. And I absolutely cannot imagine my life without you. So please,” he paused, pausing to look at Hinata. To really look at Hinata. He hoped that he looked how he felt. He slowly put a hand on Hinata’s. “Please let me show you how I feel.”

Hinata looked at him, his eyes large and his expression indecipherable. He was breathing slightly rough, and Kageyama could feel his hand sweat a bit. But he didn’t let go. He couldn’t. He kept on looking at Hinata, praying that there would be something to just give him a hint. A clue as to how Hinata would react. He couldn’t figure it out for the life of him.

Just as he is about to give up, resign himself to a life of misery and darkness, Hinata places his other hand on Kageyama’s, the warmness radiating through Kageyama’s skin. “You beat me to it. Guess that’s a win for you,” he murmured, a small smile on his face as he stared at Kageyama, his eyes glowing.

Kageyama didn’t understand. What did that mean? Was it a yes or no? Did he just get rejected? Was this a good thing? “H-huh?” he stammered, eloquently. “What do you mean, Hinata?” he asked, trying to keep his voice stable.

Hinata’s smile widened as he let out a small sigh. “I mean,” he started, before inching closer to Kageyama, and leaning forward so their faces were inches apart, his warmth radiating on Kageyama’s skin. “I would absolutely love to go out with you.”

A smile involuntarily creeped on to Kageyama’s face and he felt his breathing pick up. It felt like every article of sunlight was setting his skin on fire and his mind was trying to keep up, every ounce of intelligence he had turning to mush. His chest felt like it was blooming, a warm rush spreading throughout his body, reaching the fingertips that were in between Hinata’s palms. Hinata looked at him for a few seconds before releasing a laugh. It sounded like a song to Kageyama, his shoulders releasing a tension he never knew he had.

‘You’re such a dork!” Hinata laughed. Kageyama frowned, his brain not being able to cognitively think of a comeback. “Come here,” Hinata crooned, opening his arms wide, a wide grin on his face.

Kageyama hesitated at first. He had never hugged Hinata before. Heck, he thinks the last time he's hugged anyone had been when he left for Italy and he hugged his sister goodbye. Where did his arms go? Would one go above and the other go below? How close does he get? When should he let go?

Hinata let out yet another breathy laugh at Kageyama’s struggle, rolling his eyes before pulling Kageyama into the hug. He surrounded his arms around Kageyama, the angle they were sitting at making it so that Hinata’s chest was flush against Kageyama's. Kageyama froze, again not really knowing what to do. Hinata breathed into the embrace, making every possible gap nonexistent. Slowly, Kageyama lifted his arms, crossing them over Hinata’s back and squeezing. He sighed into the hug, as if he was transferring his love through touch. He wondered if Hinata was able to tell just how much Kageyama loved him.

Hinata pulled back, still resting his arms on Kageyama’s as he smiled up at him. “You know, I’ve liked you for such a long time, but I would always get nervous you wouldn’t like me back. The fact that you’re a gigantic heartthrob didn’t help my nerves!” he laughed, his eyes all squinty from his smile.

Kageyama froze at the choice of words, the irony of it all making him smile an incredulous smile. “A heartthrob?”

Hinata eagerly nodded as he looked up at him. “You know what that is, right?” he teased, a small smirk at the thought of Kageyama being stupid.  A swoosh of affection traveled through Kageyama’s body, fireworks exploding throughout his mind.

“Yes,” he started, leaning down and kissing Hinata on the forehead, before looking down at him. He had a small flush on his face, his mouth slightly open at the sudden affection. Kageyama felt like he was floating on air, his mind all fuzzy and warm. He cradled Hinata’s head, slowly pulling him in for another hug. “Yes, I do.”
