Work Text:

Chayanne ignored his aching body and the blood dripping from one of his injuries as they trudged through the overgrown woods. He held his sword in one hand, using it to chop through bushes and weeds, while his other hand held Tallulahs hand. “I think we’re almost there…” He said. After spending the entire night running through the woods hoping to find home and battling mobs, home was more than a welcome sight. Chayanne just hoped that their scolding for wandering off would be light. Their fathers were definitely going to be worried sick.

Chayanne and Tallulah had wandered off without Phil or Missa to explore the area around their new home. They had not planned on going far, but their excitement had guided them far from home. Then the sun had set, and they could not find their way home. Both of them had minor injuries from their exploration and from the mobs that had found them. But Chayanne had taken the brunt of it. There was no way he could let Tallulah get hurt when he was the one who had suggested their exploration.

Relief flooded Chayanne when they finally made it through the undergrowth and their little home came into view. He took a step, then he was crashing to the ground painfully as his vision blurred. The pain he was in intensified. Thankfully, he didn’t drag Tallulah down with him.

“Chay!” She shouted, then crouched down beside him. Tallulah tried to help him up, but he couldn’t seem to get his body to respond how he wanted it to. Everything felt so heavy and he was so tired. Chayanne heard the door open. “Papa! Over here!” She called.

Chayanne heard the approaching footsteps. Then he was being taken into gentle arms. He could feel exhaustion pulling on him, but he didn’t dare close his eyes yet. The young dragon looked up into the worried eyes of his father. He finally let go of his sword.

“You did good, son…” Phil said gently. “You can rest now.”

Those few words finally convinced Chayanne to close his eyes, giving in to the exhaustion. He could worry about the scolding he would receive later. Right now, he could rest. Knowing that he had done what he had always promised to do. Keep Tallulah safe.
