A little help was necessary

Summary:

Imogen had always known she was different. It just took Luna Lovegood coming out as a transfem for her to realise why she was different.

Notes:

This story was originally going to have s different plot but I ended up re-writing it, so . . . enjoy!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Imogen had always known she was different. She often refused to wear dresses like the ones her younger sisters, Ryenne and Ginny, wore. Rather than doing 'girly' stuff such as painting her nails and wearing frilly clothing, she was outside playing Quidditch and playing pranks on the others. Sure, her younger sisters played Quidditch also, but Ginny rarely played (mostly because they rarely ever let her join games) and Ryenne preferred watching rather than playing.

It wasn't until Luna Lovegood came out as - well Luna, that Imogen realised, what if she wasn't a girl? Maybe her and Fred were more alike than they had originally thought.

She almost immediately told Fred this and he was ecstatic, "We're already identical! All you have to do is cut your hair and wear my clothes. Think of all the pranks we could pull! "

Imogen had known Fred would respond like this but he was still worried. How would his family react? While, yes, they did respond positively to Luna coming out but Luna's not one of Molly's desired daughters. His mother wasn't exactly subtle about her favoritism of her daughter's. She'd buy all three of her daughters new clothes often with the excuse that their older brothers hand-me-downs just wouldn't do because they were 'boy' clothes.

Imogen was--

"Henry?"

"What?" Imogen replied confused as Fred stared at him awaiting something.

"What do you think about the name Henry?" Oh right, they were trying to figure out a new name for Imogen.

"Eh, doesn't feel right. " Imogen said as Fred crossed the name off their list. The same day Imogen told Fred that he was trans they created a list of possible names for Imogen. Most of them were royal names as the Weasleys currently had a trend of royal names for the men: Arthur, William, Charles, and Frederick.

"Yeah, plus Fred and Henry don't really sound good together. " Fred added.

"Neither does Fred and Imogen but mum still chose it. " Imogen retorted.

Imogen and Fred went through name after name trying to figure out the right one but neither of them felt like him. The longer they took to find him a name the more concerned he became. What if he never found his name and was forever called Imogen? Being called Imogen had never felt right. He felt uneasy every time someone used it. At first, he had just assumed that he didn't like his name, nothing more, and started going by Gen instead, just like how Ginny went by Ginny and not Ginevra. It helped soothe her discomfort a little but it had still never felt right. They'd gone through practically every name on the list and none of them had felt right. Alexander, Peter, Philip, James, Louis, Albert, nothing.

"At this rate, I'll never find my name. " Imogen said gloomy.

"Don't worry, mate, we still have plenty of names on the list. " Fred comforted him, "And maybe your name just isn't a royal name. "

"Yeah but, if it isn't a royal name then--" I'll feel like an imposter being the only male Weasley without one.

Sensing his discomfort, Fred didn't push him. Instead he said the next name on the list. "What about George?"

George . . . That name felt both right and wrong but it felt infinitely better than Imogen did. George Weasley. "That- that one feels right. "

"George, Fred and George Weasley. Sounds perfect!" Fred puts his arms up in celebration.

George chuckled as Fred tore up the list full of names. "Well, that's settled then. " Fred wiped away fake tears, "Today I gained a new twin, George. "

Eventually, George couldn't hold it in any longer. He burst out laughing as Fred continued with his theatrics. Tomorrow, they'd cut his hair similarly to Fred's. Tomorrow he'd come out to his family and have to deal with his mother fretting over losing a daughter. But that was for future George to worry about. Right now, George was relishing in the feeling of finally feeling right.

Notes:

I didn't make Georges dead name just a genderbent version of George because I feel as though that would be dysphoric. Like changing your name from Georgette or Georgina to George isn't really a huge difference. Then again, maybe sometimes your name isn't the problem but your gender and hormones are. I once knew a Trans guy named Kate who just never felt the need to change their name.

Here I like to imagine that once Molly gave birth to the twins and had a 'girl' they planned to stop having kids. But then Molly accidentally got pregnant with Ryenne and Ginny. Because they were both girls Molly was glad to have gotten pregnant twice more.

Also once George comes out, she'll suddenly be glad she didn't stop there and accidentally kept going. Cause if she didn't then she wouldn't of had a daughter.
