Work Text:

Sylvain wasn’t sure where to even begin when it came to thanking Yuri. If it weren’t for the former Abyssian, he was sure he would be dead. Earlier that morning the two happened to be part of the same scout party that was sent out to survey the enemy’s movements and predict where they might go next. It was going smoothly until they came across a troop that they hadn’t anticipated. Fighting broke out and before Sylvain knew it he was caught between a rock and a hard spot. He was out of options until his rescue arrived in the form of Yuri, quickly catching the two soldiers that cornered him off guard. Together, the two could fight them off and reunite with the rest of their party, making a hasty retreat.

Now he was at a loss. Obviously he owed Yuri. Maybe he could take him to dinner at the next village they stopped by. Would that be too much like a date? Would he even agree to doing something like that? Sylvain realized he may be thinking too hard about this. He didn’t often worry about repaying his comrades. So…why did he want to make the effort for Yuri?

“Something on your mind, rooster?” Yuri spoke up as he approached him, a hint of a smirk on his face.

Sylvain fought away the heat that dared to appear on his face. It was a nickname Yuri started calling him after their first meeting. It was meant to taunt him but Sylvain couldn’t help but feel like he didn’t mind the nickname as much as he should. “I guess you could say that. I was just thinking about this morning. You risked your neck for me and I feel like it’s only fair I should repay you.” He admitted.

Yuri’s lip curled. “Oh my,” He drawled, “If I had known that saving you would land me a favor from you, I would have been spending every mission at your side.”

“Well, someone as valorous as you should be rewarded. I don’t usually find myself cornered in a fight but if it’s you coming to my aid I don’t think I mind.” Sylvain responded with his signature grin, trying to match Yuri’s energy. “How does dinner sound, just you and me?” That sounded like a date. He didn’t want it to sound like he was asking him on a date. Damn it! What was he so nervous for?

“Like a date?” Yuri asked, seemingly taking delight in his fidgeting. “Is the future Margrave Gautier asking me on a date?”

“It doesn’t have to be a date, we can just get dinner, nice and-.”

“No no, you just described a date, Sylvain.” Yuri teased, taking a few steps closer to him. “And I didn’t say no. In fact, I think I’ll take you up on your offer.” He stopped just mere inches from Sylvain, the faces close enough that Sylvain could feel his breath on his cheeks as he held his own. “I’ve wondered what a date with you would be like. I’m sure you won't disappoint. I happen to know a nice tavern at the next village we’re stopping at. Let’s go there, hmm?”

Sylvain wasn’t used to not being in control. If this was anyone else he might be looking for a way out, maybe an excuse of some kind, but he found himself freezing, still trying to keep his composure. His heart fluttered oddly as he continued to keep contact with Yuri’s gaze. “Yeah. Yeah that could work.” He found himself agreeing.

Finally, Yuri took a step back, allowing Sylvain to release a breath he didn’t realize he was holding. “Then it’s a date. Meet me just outside the village gates when we get there and we can walk to dinner together.” He instructed, eying the other man up and down before beginning to walk away. “Hope you’re as excited as I am. If this goes well we can consider your debt to me paid.”

Sylvain was left glued to his spot, watching him walk away. His mind was still racing to piece together what happened, he could still feel the closeness between them in the heat on his face. Whatever just happened, he didn’t hate it, and that’s what confused him most of all. A date with Yuri…he could get behind that.

Notes:

Yurivain makes me ABSOLUTELY insane the idea of Yuri being able to make Sylvain question things about himself is addicting to me. Welcome to the Liking Men Club, Sylvain!
