    Ned wasn’t really the kind of guy who flew off the handle. He’d lost count of the amount of times he’d watched Joe get pissed off on his behalf, but Ned preferred to handle his conflicts cordially, with words instead of fists.

    Okay, so he’d punched a guy or two in his days as Nancy Drew’s boyfriend, but that was usually because their lives had depended on it, or he’d been under a lot of stress.

    Joe didn’t stress him out, didn’t make him be part of his detective life if he didn’t want to, and didn’t make him feel bad about that. It was refreshing.

    And it made what happened one night all the more surprising to both of them.
