Work Text:
Miles Edgeworth could barely contain his nervous energy and excitement as he sat in the lobby area leading to the wedding hall. He could hardly be blamed - one’s wedding day was a fairly momentous occasion, after all.
The venue was adorned with flower arrangements in a multitude of colours, ranging from white gardenias, pink peonies, red carnations and roses, to blue hydrangeas, yellow sunflowers, orange tulips and lilac freesias. Arranging this wedding had provided Phoenix with a much-needed lesson in the names of flowers.
The morning had been a whirlwind of preparations for the day, but this was a rare moment Miles had to himself. The guests were seated in the hall and the wedding processional would soon be commencing, marking the beginning of the rest of his life with his husband-to-be.
Miles gazed down fondly at the sapphire engagement ring on his finger, twisting it around before remembering to move it to the ring finger on his right hand ahead of the ceremony. The ring finger on his left hand felt naked now, but he knew his wedding ring would soon be on it.
Miles took a deep breath and, with trembling hands, pulled a piece of paper out of the breast pocket on his white blazer. He unfolded the paper and read the words he had carefully penned just days ago:
Dear Father,
Even though you are unable to read this letter, I feel that it is long overdue. Writing to you beyond the grave admittedly feels strange and not necessarily my style. Alas, I seem to have changed in recent years.
I wanted to tell you that I am marrying the love of my life this week. Phoenix Wright. You will remember him as my best friend when we were in the fourth grade, who I talked about constantly and who frequently came round for sleepovers. I did not realise at the time, but you were so happy for me for making a friend. He became a defense attorney, just like you. In fact, the reason he became one was to save me. I am forever grateful that someone would love me so much so as to change the entire trajectory of their life for me.
It is thanks to Phoenix and his unwavering faith in me that the DL-6 incident was finally resolved after 15 long years. For that entire time, I blamed myself for your death and was plagued by constant nightmares about it. Perhaps you also believed I was at fault in your last moments. But Phoenix uncovered the truth and laid the case to rest. I hope that you somehow know the truth now too.
I must apologise for everything that I have become. Phoenix says that you would be proud of me, but I am not so sure. Perhaps now you would be; I have changed my ways since the beginning of my career. After being led astray by my former mentor and then being saved by Phoenix, I came to realise that the law is not about winning by any means necessary. It is about finding the truth and serving justice. And I will not stop trying to find the truth as a prosecutor.
Plenty of times, I find myself wondering what could have been, had it not been for the DL-6 incident, although I know this mindset is not a healthy one. And had it not been for that case, who knows whether I would be walking down the aisle today? Though Phoenix believes the two of us would find each other in any universe and I have to say, I might be starting to come around to some of his absurd ways of thinking.
What I do know is that you would be overjoyed to see me marrying the love of my life. I wish more than anything that you could be here with me on my wedding day. As much as I am a man of science, there is a part of me that wishes to believe that you are watching over me today, or that you are here with me in spirit.
Thank you for being the greatest father I could ask for. I am trying to be a good father myself now, to darling Trucy. I hope I can do justice to the amazing job you did.
All my love,
Miles
Miles meticulously folded the letter up again and tucked it back into his pocket. Reading his words again had been painful, but also strangely…freeing.
Miles heard familiar footsteps and looked up to see Phoenix for the first time that day. He was a vision of beauty dressed in a striking black suit and trousers, with a cobalt blue waistcoat and tie bringing out the lighter specks of his dark brown eyes. The outfit contrasted pleasantly with Miles’s own white suit and trousers and pink waistcoat and tie.
“Wow.” The mere sight of Miles had seemingly rendered Phoenix speechless. Tears started springing to his eyes. “You look so beautiful, Miles.”
Miles walked towards Phoenix and wiped the tears out of his eyes.
“You’re one to talk. You are the most handsome man I have ever laid eyes upon,” Miles said breathlessly.
“You clearly don’t own a mirror then.” Phoenix had a suave grin on his face.
Miles rolled his eyes, smiling all the while. Phoenix had that effect on him.
“Are you crying too, Miles?”
“N-no…,” Miles denied as tears fell from his eyes.
“Aww, you’re such a big sap,” said Phoenix, taking his turn to wipe Miles’s eyes.
“Takes one to know one,” Miles retorted. “Anyway, I can’t help it. Today is a big day.”
“It is,” Phoenix agreed. “It feels like we’ve been waiting our whole lives for it. Today is the start of a new chapter for us.”
“That it is. A new chapter which I will not permit you to enter with a crooked tie. Allow me to fix it.” Miles moved closer to adjust the tie.
“It is so not crooked. You’re just using that as an excuse to touch me.”
“Am I really that transparent?”
“To me, yes.”
His ruse having been uncovered, Miles gave up on pretending to fix Phoenix’s tie and kissed him on the lips.
“You’ll get a chance to do that at the altar,” said Phoenix as they pulled apart.
“Yes, but this moment is just for the two of us.”
Phoenix grinned and the two of them sat down, nestled closely together and holding hands in a rare moment of peace. This was their moment - it had been years in the making. But after all this time, they had finally made it.
Soon enough, the rest of the wedding party entered the lobby, the moment of walking down the aisle nearly upon them. The grooms were being pulled every which way by their loved ones as the room reverberated with animated chatter, excitement for the ceremony brewing.
Eventually though, it was time for the wedding processional to begin. The room gradually emptied out as everyone took their positions.
“You ready?” Phoenix asked Miles as he watched Trucy, the flower girl, and Apollo, the ring bearer, walk down the aisle.
“I’ve never been more ready for anything in my entire life.”
With smiles on both of their faces, the couple linked arms as the music changed and they began to walk towards the altar. Towards the rest of their life together.
