Mirri Elendis stood in the grand foyer of the estate, her arms folded tightly across her chest. The crimson dress she wore clung to her like a second skin, a stark contrast to her usual attire of leather and steel. It was a garment that whispered of wealth and elegance, but she felt more like a caged animal than a lady of the evening. The Dark Elf's eyes narrowed as she surveyed the room, her foot tapping impatiently on the polished marble floor.
"Mirri, my love!" Alea Velothi called out, her voice a soothing balm amidst the cacophony of the ball. Mirri's expression softened as she turned to face her mate. Alea looked resplendent in a tailored black suit that accentuated her lithe form. Her Blood-Forged skin glowed warmly in the moonlight that filtered through the windows, casting a gentle aura around her. Her pet wisp, a glowing blue orb with a playful streak, hovered by her side, mimicking her every move.
"You look like you're about to tear the place apart" Alea joked, her eyes sparkling with mischief "Care for a stroll in the gardens? It's a bit more... peaceful out there" She pointed in that direction with her thumb.
Mirri nodded, more than happy to leave this fancy bullshit "Lead the way, my lady" She said, her voice dripping with sarcasm but Alea simply smirked. As they stepped outside, the cool night air washed over them, a welcome relief from the stifling heat of the ballroom. The moon hung high in the sky, casting long shadows across the meticulously manicured lawns. The scent of night-blooming flowers filled the air, sweet and intoxicating.
The gardens were a maze of hedges and statues, the pathways lit by softly glowing mushroom lanterns that painted the scene in an otherworldly light. Mirri felt more at home here than she had inside the opulent mansion. Alea, noticing the shift in her demeanour, took her hand and gave it a gentle squeeze "Better?" She asked, her voice low and concerned.
Mirri let out a slow breath, her eyes scanning the area "It's... tolerable" She conceded, her tone slightly less acidic. Alea chuckled, the sound as warm as the glow from her wisp "Well, I can't say I blame you. These fancy Altmeri parties are a bit much for me too" She kissed Mirri's temple much to the woman's pleasure.
They strolled along the winding path, their footsteps muffled by the soft moss beneath their boots. The silence was broken only by the distant sound of laughter and music from the ball, which grew fainter with every step. Mirri felt the tension in her shoulders ease a fraction as they moved further away from the prying eyes of the high society.
"You know, you could stand to loosen up a bit" Alea said, her voice as light as the wisp that danced around her "You're in the presence of potential allies, not enemies" She nudged Mirri playfully.
Mirri rolled her eyes but couldn't help the small smile that tugged at her lips "And here I thought I was the diplomat of the two of us"
Alea shrugged, her smile widening "Perhaps, but even diplomats need a break from the politics of the ballroom" She stopped walking and turned to face her love, her eyes earnest "You're among friends here. Let yourself enjoy the night"
Mirri's gaze searched Alea's for a moment before she nodded, a reluctant smile playing on her lips "Very well, I'll try" She said, her voice softer than it had been all evening. Alea's wisp, sensing the shift in mood, drifted closer to the two of them, its light casting a comforting glow.
The gardens grew quieter as they ventured deeper, the music now just a faint hum in the background. They came upon a small pond, the water's surface shimmering with the light from the moon above. A few lilies floated lazily, their petals open to the night sky. Alea released Mirri's hand and stepped closer to the water's edge, her eyes reflecting the tranquil scene.
"It's beautiful, isn't it?" Alea murmured, her voice barely carrying over the soft whispers of the breeze.
Mirri stepped up behind her, the warmth of Alea's body seeping through the fabric of her dress. Without a word, she wrapped her arms around Alea's waist, pulling her close. Alea leaned back into the embrace, her eyes fluttering shut as she felt Mirri's cheek press against hers. The Dark Elf's sigh was content, a contrast to the growls and snarls she usually reserved for her enemies.
Their embrace grew stronger, and Alea turned to face Mirri fully. Their eyes met, and Alea saw the storm clouds of irritation part in Mirri's gaze, revealing the tenderness she knew lay beneath "Thank you..." Mirri murmured, her voice a warm caress against Alea's ear.
Alea nuzzled her, a soft smile playing on her lips "For what?"
Mirri shrugged, her arms tightening around Alea "For being you, you goof" She said, her voice gruff but earnest "And for putting up with me..."
Alea chuckled, her eyes shining with affection "Always, my love" She whispered, her hand coming up to cup Mirri's cheek "Now, let's enjoy this peace while we can"
They stood there for a moment, their breaths mingling in the cool night air. Alea's warmth was a comfort to Mirri, whose skin was usually cold to the touch. They watched the wisp dance around them, its light casting a soft blue glow on their faces. Mirri's thumb traced gentle circles on Alea's waist, the fabric of the suit smooth beneath her touch.
"A dance, perhaps?" Alea suggested, her voice light and airy "It's not often we get to indulge in such... non-threatening activities"
Mirri raised an eyebrow, her grip on Alea loosening slightly "You think I'd make a good dancer?" She asked, a hint of amusement in her tone.
Alea's eyes sparkled "Well, you're certainly nimble" She said with a wink, her cheeks dimpling "Besides, I'll lead"
Mirri couldn't resist the tease "Fine" She agreed, releasing Alea "But if I trip over these ridiculous shoes, it's your fault!"
Alea just laughed, taking Mirri's hand and leading her to a clearing nearby. The music from the ballroom was faint, but the rhythm was clear enough for them to follow. She placed her other hand on Mirri's waist, her thumb brushing against the soft fabric of the dress. Mirri's eyes searched Alea's for a moment, then she took a deep breath and allowed herself to be led.
They began to move together, the steps of the dance foreign to Mirri but she followed Alea's lead gracefully, their bodies swaying in time with the distant melody. The moon cast long shadows across the grass, making it seem as if they were dancing in a realm of shifting light and dark. Alea's wisp hovered around them, its glow bobbing in time with their movements, casting a soft blue light that painted their faces in a serene glow.
As they danced, Mirri felt the last of her anger slip away, replaced by a warm contentment she hadn't felt in a long time. Alea's hand was firm but gentle, guiding her through the steps with ease. Despite her initial protests, Mirri found that she enjoyed the rhythm, the way Alea's eyes never left hers, filled with patience and silent encouragement.
Their laughter mingled with the rustle of the leaves as they stumbled and corrected their steps, the tension of the evening evaporating with every beat. Alea's cheeks were flushed with excitement, her eyes alight with joy. Mirri couldn't help but feel her own spirits lift in response.
"You're not so bad at this" Alea said, her voice filled with genuine surprise.
Mirri snorted "Don't get any ideas. I'm just not tripping over my own feet... yet"
But Alea only chuckled, a sound as bright as the wisp's glow "You're doing splendidly" She whispered, her voice a warm caress in the night air.
Mirri allowed herself to be swept up in the moment, her movements growing more fluid as she became more comfortable. They danced under the moon's watchful eye, the silver light casting a shimmering halo around Alea's silver hair. The dress Mirri wore swished around their legs with every step, a fiery red blur in the blue-tinted darkness.
As the music grew softer, Alea gracefully dipped her girlfriend. Mirri's heart raced, the thrill of the dance mingling with the warmth that always surged through her when Alea was near. She felt Alea's breath against her skin as the Dunmer whispered "Thank you for this"
Alea's cheeks were flushed with the exertion of the dance, her eyes shining with happiness. As Mirri straightened, Alea took her hand and brought it to her lips, placing a gentle kiss on her knuckles. The gesture was so unexpected, so foreign to Mirri's usual rough-and-tumble world, that she felt a lump form in her throat. She cleared it awkwardly, not quite sure how to respond.
The music from the ballroom grew softer still, almost a whisper on the breeze. Alea stepped back, her hand still holding Mirri's. She executed a perfect bow, her head tipping low in a show of respect and affection. The wisp above them mimicked the motion, its light dimming and brightening in a playful wink.
Mirri couldn't help but chuckle, her own bow slightly sloppier than Alea's "I love you" She said, her voice tinged with admiration.
Alea grinned at her "I love you, too" She replied, her voice as warm as the embrace of the sun.
Without another word, Alea stepped back into Mirri's arms, and they hugged tightly, their bodies fitting together as if they were two pieces of a puzzle. Alea's head rested on Mirri's shoulder, her cheek pressing against the cool fabric of the dress. Mirri's hand moved to cradle the back of Alea's head, her long fingers threading through the soft, silver hair.
For a moment, they just stood there, holding each other in the quiet of the garden. The distant laughter from the ballroom seemed a world away, drowned out by the pounding of their hearts and the soft sigh of the wind through the leaves. Alea's wisp hovered close, its light pulsing in time with their breaths.
Mirri tilted her head, and Alea met her gaze, her eyes filled with the warmth of a hundred suns. Mirri leaned in, her lips brushing against Alea's in a gentle, feather-light kiss. It was a kiss that spoke of love and friendship, of battles shared and dangers faced. Alea's eyes fluttered closed, a soft gasp escaping her as she returned the kiss, her hand coming up to cup Mirri's cheek.
When they broke apart, Alea's arm snaked around Mirri's shoulders, pulling her closer. The warmth of her touch was like a blanket on a cold night, and Mirri felt a shiver of pleasure run down her spine. They stood there for a moment, the world around them seeming to hold its breath. The wisp's light cast a soft blue glow around them.
"Ready to face the music?" Alea asked, her voice filled with warmth and affection.
Mirri nodded, feeling a bit more at ease than she had earlier "As long as I have you by my side, my love" She replied, a hint of a smile playing on her lips.
They made their way back to the ballroom, Alea's arm still around Mirri's shoulders, her warmth a comforting presence against the chill of the night. The garden had provided a brief reprieve from the formality of the event, but now it was time to face the music—literally and figuratively.
As they approached the grand doors, Alea took Mirri's free hand, raising it to her lips. Her eyes searched Mirri's, filled with a love so profound it seemed to glow brighter than the stars above "I adore you, beautiful" She whispered, her breath warm against the Dark Elf's skin.
Mirri felt a blush creep up her neck, but she didn't pull away. Instead, she leaned into Alea, her cheek pressing against the soft fabric of the black suit "I love you too, goof" She murmured, her voice thick with emotion. It was a declaration she didn't make often, but when she did, it was as true as the moon's pull on the tides.
So maybe... just maybe... those stupid balls aren't so bad. Only as long as they have each other.
