Work Text:
'I still remember the day we met like it was just yesterday.'
I remember the first time we had met. You were following behind your parents who came to greet my father. The moment our eyes met, I finally knew what the colour grey looked like.
You were to be my servant, yet I knew our souls were tied together with a bond unlike any other. However you never mentioned that bond, perhaps I should've known then that our relationship was doomed.
The first time I sacrificed someone else for you was on my 5th birthday. My younger brother had tried to frame you yet I immediately accused him of attempting to poison me.
He had died the next day.
You asked why I defended you yet I only smiled and said that you were my best friend, locking away these morbid feelings.
You always beat me in mancala yet after your mother came in to talk to you, you never won ever again.
After you had turned 16, you had received a letter from Night Raven College and decided to leave. Yet selfish as I was, I refused to let you go. Rather than tying you down with me, I had begged my father to let me go with you as well.
I entered Night Raven College two months later.
Perhaps I should've known that you wouldn't take too kindly to this, but I refused to see the truth and ignored it instead.
In our second year, I could feel that something had reached its boiling point yet I ignored it.
My memories started having blank spots in them. I knew of only one spell that could cause this yet I ignored it. I would say it's because I trusted you but I know it was because I saw it as retribution.
The strings that bind us are getting tighter.
I could've avoided this but I have always loved your eyes and never once looked away.
I could've prevented all of this. I regret it. I had almost lost you.
You continued to look beautiful even as ink dripped all over your body. Ethereal yet disturbing.
We managed to save you yet I continued to feel regret for putting you in such danger.
Staying in the library for the past few days, I found a book. Now I realise that not all soulmates are bound to be together.
I had been in my room when something seemed to wrap around my heart. Coughing unendingly, what finally came out was something I didn't yet at the same time expected.
Petals the colour of red, red roses.
I threw away the petals and hid the blood that came with.
While you continued to complete your duties, you never initiated contact with me. Of course I knew you wouldn't, after all you hated me.
The flowers continued to grow yet I also continued to ignore them. However today was different for petals of different colours had also came out.
Along with the red petals, a bright yellow had come with. Petals of yellow tulips had fallen out along with red roses.
As always I hid the evidence of what had occurred.
As the weeks passed by, I could feel the flowers growing. Lilia and Cater had started growing suspicious because of my paling complexion, but I continued to divert their suspicions.
They found out. A whole red rose had fallen out during our club meeting today. They immediately knew who it was that I had loved.
They told me to tell you but I immediately rejected that idea knowing you hated me. In the end, I begged them not to tell anyone and they agreed on the condition that they were to monitor my condition at all times.
We had been in the courtyard today. Me, you, and all the other house wardens and their vices for the headmage had summoned us.
I wasn't prepared for what would happen next.
As we all stood around waiting for the headmage to arrive, I felt something coming out. I wasn't able to do anything as I keeled over and knelt on the ground, coughing out flowers.
I could feel the horror of all the others as they stared at me in shock. Time seemed to have stopped before someone finally snapped out of it and yelled for someone to get the headmage.
You immediately ran towards me and asked who it was that I loved. I could only smile and say nothing as the flowers continued to come out.
Lilia had immediately rushed over as well and told me to say it. Yet stubborn as I was, I refused to say a word.
Then I felt tears, I looked up and saw you crying. You continued to ask who it was and finally I cracked.
I finally said the words I had always wanted to say, "The one I loved had always been you." Ending those words, my mind went blank as everything started to fade away.
Resigning myself to this fate, I prepared for my eternal slumber. But then I heard you utter out something I never expected, "You idiot..! I love you too so don't fall asleep!"
Shocked I looked at you in the eyes, feeling the flowers tangled around my heart start to wither and fade away.
Then I started tearing up. So our bond had always been there. It never once broke.
Truly we were destined to be together. As I felt our strings get tighter, I could finally relax knowing that you had loved me as well.
End
