Perfect

Summary:

"Light Yagami needed to be perfect. He absolutely had to. Therefore, every aspect of his life was practiced until perfection, in privacy so no one could see the awful truth that he wasn't perfect from the start."

My piece for the first day of Lawlight week 2024, for the prompt 'First'.

Notes:

I haven't posted any writing in forever and I came back with Death Note fanfiction. I'm sure my mother would be so proud....

It's shorter than I would have liked, but I was suddenly really busy. Now to go work on tomorrow's!

Work Text:

Light Yagami needed to be perfect. He absolutely had to. Therefore, every aspect of his life was practiced until perfection, in privacy so no one could see the awful truth that he wasn't perfect from the start.

His perfection needed to look natural. It needed to look as though he managed to understand the task completely on his very first try.

So he sat in his room and studied so that no class would ever dare to be difficult. He practiced cooking when home alone so that his mother would be amazed whenever he helped her. He had even practiced singing, quietly when in the shower, so that he would be able to amaze his family when singing along to whatever Sayu plays.

For Light Yagami, he could never do anything for the first time publicly. Everything he did needed to be practiced a hundred times until he was ready to pretend it was his first.

L did not allow him time to practice.

When L kissed him, Light’s first thought was that he hadn't practiced this before. He would need to initiate what he saw in movies. His next thought was that L was pulling away far too soon.

“Has Light never kissed anyone before?"

There it was. Proof he hadn't done it perfectly.

"Not really, no.” He admitted. "Sorry if it was bad. I haven't really practiced.”

L nodded in understanding, before moving even closer.

"They say practice makes perfection. Would Light like to practice with me?”

All things considered, it didn't matter that Light’s first kiss was bad. The next one hundred were perfect.
