Summary
After emerging from his past struggles with addiction, Mikey Way travels to Tokyo, Japan, to reunite with his brother, Gerard, as a form of celebration. The two musicians have always had an unusually close and intense relationship, even after having faced a strain two years prior. During this three-day stay, memories--both good and bad--begin coming back to Mikey, of when he and Gerard toured as the rock band, My Chemical Romance.
Alongside these reflections is Gerard's marriage to fellow musician and artist, Lindsey, something Mikey has always felt a little off about. The more he learns of the details from Gerard about her treatment of him, the more uncomfortable Mikey becomes. Eventually, this leads to the question of Lindsey possibly being a culprit to a mysterious blog that ended up causing the aforementioned strain between the two brothers.
With the intimacy of Sofia Coppola's Lost in Translation and the themes of obsession and desire from André Aciman's Call Me by Your Name, "It Hurts to Love You" explores relationships that are more complicated behind closed doors than they appear to the general public.
