If I Had Known

Summary:

Pietro and Erik discuss their relationship at a café in New Orleans.

House of Dadneto 2024, Prompt, Acceptance

Work Text:

"Thank you for meeting with me Pietro, I had feared that you would wish to keep away." Erik said, walking toward where he sat outside the small café.

"Have a seat, Magnus, or is it Erik you go by these days?" He asked, crossing his arms.

"Either will be fine." Erik sat down.

"What is it you wished to speak to me about? Wanda didn't want to come and I didn't press the issue, but I can always relay the information back to her."

"I wanted to apologize for what happened to your mother." Erik said, "Magda meant the world to me, and the very idea of me hurting her, hurting her children-our children- destroys me."

Pietro looked down at his lap for a moment.

"It's strange for me, Django and Marya are my parents, but yet so are you and Magda." He said slowly, "And I'm angry that Magda died in part due to you, even though it's not really your fault. But still, she wouldn't have been on Wundagore if it wasn't for you."

"And while I'm so glad we were raised by our mother and father, I can't help but wish we had known you both." He continued, "I don't know if that makes sense, it's hard to reconcile the two."

"It does, and I know Magda would be so proud of you both."

Pietro chuckled.

"I look like you. That's the one thing that stuck out to me, just how much we look alike."

"We do. If you wish, I could show you some pictures of when I was your age."

"I would like that."

"And I am grateful for Django and Marya Maximoff." Erik continued, "They raised you both well."

"You've talked to Wanda once."

"And she was a confident young woman, something any father would dream of raising his daughter to be."

"I'm glad you don't hate them." Pietro confessed.

"They are your parents, I can only imagine how hard it is for you to accept me as your father."

Pietro nodded.

"It is harder for Wanda, she's a very empathetic person, and it's hard for her sometimes to grapple with things such as this."

"That is one piece of the strength she carries." Erik agreed, "To feel like that allows her to better understand others and show them kindness."

"The great Magneto, speaking about kindness." Pietro laughed.

"It is a virtue few hold." Erik said seriously, "Most only pretend to care about others, their kindness comes from self-preservation, you must remember this Pietro."

“I know, Erik.”

The older man nodded.

“Is there anything else on your mind?”

“What was she like? Our mother?”

Erik felt a large smile cross his face.

“She was the most marvelous woman in world….”
