She thinks, briefly, if she and Art had gone touring, or if Patrick had followed them to school — if she’d seen them play more than that one match. If she’d watched them play doubles, maybe. She could have seen them like this. She could have known — what it is to watch them, in the moment they become more than themselves. More than this world, more than she has been since her body gave out beneath and betrayed her. They are more than in love, they are love, itself, and she is victorious and overjoyed and blisteringly angry, that all the work she had put into them led to this moment she wholly separate from.
