Work Text:

Margot sat alone in the light of the moon shining through the broken windows in her small hideout, the weight of regret pressing heavily on her chest. The silence of the night was deafening, forcing her to picture everything that happened over and over again. She could see the hurt and confusion in Mikayla's eyes, a look that haunted her whenever she closed her eyes.

She had done it for her parents, believing that it was the right thing to do. But as the nights turned into days, and the days turned into weeks, the guilt gnawed at her insides like a relentless beast. She had betrayed her friend - her sister - and the pain of that betrayal was a wound that refused to heal.

Margot picked up a crumbled photograph, one of the few things left from her past. It was a picture of her and Mikayla, taken during happier times. They were smiling,  bond unbreakable. But now, that bond was shattered, and Margot was left to pick up the pieces of her broken heart.

She remembered the moment vividly, the moment she chose her parents over Mikayla. Her mother had always been a guiding force in her life, but in that instant, Margot realized that the cost of loyalty was too high. She had lost a friend, and in doing so, had lost a part of herself.

Tears built up in her eyes as she whispered into the darkness, "I'm so sorry, Mikayla. I never meant to hurt you."

But the words felt hollow, a weak attempt to make up for the irreversible damage she had caused.

The nights were the hardest. Alone with her thoughts, Margot replayed the events over and over, wishing she could turn back time and change the outcome. She longed for the days when they fought side by side, when their friendship was an encouragement of hope in a world filled with hate.

As the first light of dawn began to break through the cracks in the wooden walls, Margot turned her head to the side to look where Rupert was sleeping peacefully. He was the only one that she had left, now that the rest of their family was gone.

She couldn't change the past or find a way to make things right between her and Mikayla, but she could take care of her brother and make sure that he was safe, much like she had used to do with Mikayla. The road ahead would be long and difficult, but she was determined to survive and become a better person. She had to, for Mikayla, for herself, and her brother.

After all, she owed them that much.
