"Only A Fool Gives Up On A Woman Like Her."

Summary:

"Only a fool gives up on a woman like her." Was a sentence that Gobber as well as the rest of the village had been hearing for the past 14 years.
The night Valka had been taken by a four-winged dragon; Stoick didn't hesitate to begin a search for her. Gobber stayed back to watch over their son, Hiccup, as he'd figured that the parties would find her in a month or so. Little did anyone know, he was so, so wrong.
No matter how many years went by, Stoick never stopped searching. Others would tell him that it was time to give up, that his son needed him, and the village needed a chief. But he still couldn't give up. She was out there, and he was going to find her.
~
What if Stoick never stopped searching for his wife, leaving his son without a father and the village without a chief?

Chapter Text

"Uncle Gobber?" The young Viking boy pulled on the large man's shirt.

"What're you doing up at this hour? It's the middle of the night!" Gobber replied, ruffling Hiccup's hair.

"Is dad already gone again?" Hiccup asked sadly.

Gobber paused, realizing that Stoick had left a few hours ago now, just after Hiccup had drifted off to sleep. "Yeah. Sorry kiddo." Gobber replied solemnly as Hiccup walked over to the couch and sat down next to him.

"Does dad care about me? He leaves for months, and when he does come back, he ignores me and doesn't even say goodbye when he leaves again!" Hiccup ranted, tears welling up in his eyes.

"Of course your dad cares about you!" Gobber said, bringing Hiccup in for a hug. "He's just grieving. He loved your mother very much, so it's hard for him to let go even after these 4 years."

"Do you think he'll eventually come back and spend time with me?" Hiccup asked softly.

"Of course! As soon as he finds your mother he'll be back home, and he'll teach you all you need to know to be the next chief of Berk!" Gobber said, shaking Hiccup playfully.

But it seemed it didn't get rid of Hiccup's worry, "But what if he doesn't find her? What if she really is dead?"

"He'll find her." Gobber said, hugging Hiccup.

He has to.

Notes:

Hi! I hope you like this first chapter, this idea randomly popped into my head and just kept expanding so now I'm writing it!
This is a universe where Stoick never stopped searching for Valka, leaving Hiccup neglected and Gobber to raise Hiccup for him.
I'm just writing as the idea expands so I have no idea how long it'll be, but it'll definitely be more than just a few and most of the upcoming chapters should be much longer
