Work Text:
Oikawa liked taking the train in the afternoon.
It was quieter than it was during morning. Rush hour and all that. He always felt cramped, especially since he was taller than most people. But during the afternoon most people were already at work; which meant that Oikawa could stretch out however he liked.
He checked his phone as he passed by the Tokyo landscape. Buildings blurring together in his periphery. His law professor cancelled the lecture last minute due to a family crisis, which was fortunate for Oikawa. A giddy smile made its way to his face as he thought about getting home early and surprising Iwaizumi. It’s been awhile since their busy schedules lined up like this.
Both of them were full time students at Tokyo University, Oikawa doing law on a volleyball scholarship and Iwaizumi doing sports medicine. Their schedules were both so jam packed it was hard for them to fit in date nights. At first they both tried really hard to maintain a scheduled date, but soon they both resigned themselves to trying to fit dates in around their hectic lives and not the other way around.
It’s been about a month since they’ve both had a free evening to have a date. So the prospect of it has Oikawa leaping for joy.
The electronic train voice alerts the carriage their next stop will be in five minutes. Oikawa tightens his grip on the box he has resting in his lap. His leg bouncing up and down in impatience. Since Oikawa’s lecture was canceled and he was already in the area, he decided to stop by a bakery that Iwaizumi loves before heading back on the train. His boyfriend was a sucker for the lemon blueberry tarts they made. The way his eyes lit up when he took his first bite made Oikawa want to capture that moment forever.
Oikawa raced off the train when his stop came. Speeding around the station whilst trying not to bowl over every person in his way. He held the bakery box like a life line. Oikawa could feel himself smiling like an idiot as he ran home to his Iwa-chan.
He had to take a minute to regain his breath after running a normally ten minute walk in five minutes. Slumping outside the apartment door, Oikawa peeked inside the box to make sure the baked goods survived his mad man dash. It all looked okay, nothing looked to devastatingly smushed. Letting out a sigh of relief, Oikawa grabbed his keys and unlocked the front door.
As Oikawa entered, he could hear the roar of the vacuum coming from the bedroom. He grinned and slipped his shoes off. Quietly tiptoeing to the kitchen, placing the tart down with the finesse of an international spy. He crept carefully down the hallway, passing by photos of their lives from various moments in time, to the bedroom door that’s been left ajar.
The vacuuming got louder as he pushed the door open. Iwaizumi stood there, back turned to the door, in all of his glory. The white shirt he was wearing stretched over his back muscles, defining them and the work Iwaizumi put into maintaining his physique. The grey sweatpants that he was wearing was beginning to fray around the hem. They were his favourite pair after all, and he wore them religiously. Not that Oikawa could complain much, especially the way they hugged his ass just right—
Iwaizumi had yet to notice his boyfriend’s ogling him in the doorway. Much to Oikawa’s gratitude.
Oikawa moved carefully followed after Iwaizumi as he began to move. Always staying directly behind him, carefully closing the distance until he was just an arm’s length away from his shoulder. Oikawa made the brilliant decision to scare his boyfriend, which in hindsight wasn’t so brilliant.
Doing a little jump, Oikawa propelled himself enough to slam his hands down onto Iwaizumi’s shoulders yelling out, “Iwa-chan!”
Now of course, when you’ve spent most of your life with a cretin such as Oikawa Tooru. Someone who will never give up an opportunity to prank and jump scare a loved one; any normal person would develop a certain type of reflex.
So it really shouldn’t have come as such a surprise to Oikawa when his loving and doting boyfriend whirled around and smacked him right in the face the vacuum nozzle.
Oikawa felt is eyes begin to well with tears as he immediately stumbled back, clutching his nose. He could hear the hum of the vacuum turn off and hit the carpet with a thud; but Oikawa was too preoccupied by the steady and warm thrum of pain that began to bloom in his nose to properly notice. Opening his eyes (which he didn’t even realise he closed in the first place) he was greeted with Iwaizumi crowding around him with concern.
“Are you alright Shittykawa?” His boyfriend’s eyes were darting about his face, analysing every little minute feature as he guided Oikawa to sit on their bed.
“Yeah I’m fine Iwa-chan,” waving off his worried boyfriend. He tilted his head back to make sure that no blood would be spilt on their sheets. He glanced over to Iwaizumi and gave him a devious smile, “you hit me in the face with a vacuum and I’m the shitty one?” Oikawa exclaimed, finally removing his hand from his nose in a wild gesture once he was sure no blood was going to rush out. “Honestly Iwa-chan are you such a barbarian!”
This earned him a scowl from his overly worried boyfriend. Though it wasn’t serious as Iwaizumi pulled him closer and planted a kiss on his temple. Oikawa just gave him one of his shit-eating grins, leaning into Iwaizumi’s shoulder.
“You’re the idiot cause why the hell would you jump me when I have my AirPods in?” Iwaizumi grumbled out, gesturing to the little white earpieces that Oikawa had woefully failed to notice. “And also weren’t you supposed to come home at six? Why are you here so early?”
“Professor had to cancel class so I thought I could surprise you with a date night!” Oikawa could feel himself getting giddy at the idea it. He had no doubt that his face had broken out into that big dorky grin that Iwaizumi loved so much.
Iwaizumi’s face softened a bit at that. “You’re such a dumbass” he sighed, however stoic Iwaizumi wanted to come across was completely thwarted by his red tinged ears.
“But you love me,” Oikawa goaded as he sidled up closer into his boyfriend’s personal space. Pushing onto his strong shoulders and arms as he half slithered into Iwaizumi’s lap.
“I tolerate you at best.” Though his words were harsh, Oikawa knew it was quite the opposite as Iwaizumi helped scoop up the rest of Oikawa’s body so that he was properly sitting on his lap.
“Nah I don’t think so.” Their faces were so close together that all could Oikawa see was the bright green of Iwaizumi’s kind eyes.
“You don’t think so?” Iwaizumi matched Oikawa’s cheeky tone as he rested his hands more resolutely around Oikawa’s waist.
Titling his head, Oikawa leaned in just enough that his next words were spoken into Iwaizumi’s mouth. “I think you love me Hajime.” He pulled back just in time to catch Iwaizumi’s red face as he smiled at Oikawa without abandon.
“Yeah I think you’re right.” Oikawa felt his eyes go wide as Iwaizumi finally closed the gap in between them. Kissing him with such sincerity that they both got a bit lost in it.
And they spent the rest of the night getting lost with each other. Lemon blueberry tarts long forgotten.
