Chapter Text
As Ava Grace put down her pencil after finishing her assignment, she stared into the clock hanging upon the wall. She watched as the second hand ticked its way around the rim, waiting for it to cross the minute mark once more. As the clock lulled her into a trance, her vision slowly began to fade in and out. I should be able to lay my head down for a minute, she thought. Immediately after resting her forehead into the crease of her elbow, she drifted off into a peaceful sleep.

She awoke groggily to the blurry classroom around her as she heard the teacher stand up and begin to talk. In response, she adjusted herself and began to sit up. As she sat up however, she felt something was off. Her thighs were wet and there was a warm sensation in her underwear. There’s no way, she thought, before glancing down at her lap. There was a distinct puddle pooled on the sides of her chair. She discreetly moved her hands around the curves of her butt and felt the back of her khaki uniform skirt. Her worst fear had been realized; it was soaked. I haven’t wet myself since I was five, she thought, completely in shock. Her fear quickly turned into panic as her eyes darted around the room, hoping no one in her 8th grade social studies class had noticed her embarrassing accident. It appeared that everyone was too focused on themselves to notice, and it helped that she was sitting in the back of the room.
Taking advantage of this, she quickly removed her fluffy fleece pullover and tied it around her waist, so it would cover the back of her soaked skirt when standing. She could feel tears trying to form at the edges of her eyes as she thought about how embarrassing this situation was. Ava Grace was already 13 years old, way too old to be having accidents at school, or anywhere for that matter.
By this point the teacher had finished talking and let the class begin to work on their next assignment, so Ava Grace took this opportunity to raise her hand nervously. After a short time the teacher noticed her raised hand, and made her way over the desk.
“What do you need help with, Ava Grace?” the teacher asked reassuringly. “It seems most of your classmates are having trouble with the part about the Mayan-“ she stopped talking as she noticed the puddle around Ava Grace’s seat, her expression changing to one of concern. She leaned in closer, whispering, “Do you need to go see the nurse?”
Ava Grace nodded, tears forming in her eyes as she stood up and walked quickly to the front of the room. As she walked, she felt the pee that had pooled in her underwear begin to seep onto her thighs and down her legs. She pulled the door open and walked out into the hallway, making a beeline for the girl’s restroom. By this point tears were streaming down her face, with the embarrassment of the whole thing starting to set in. Thankfully the bathroom is empty, she thought, as she turned her backside to the mirror and looked into it. Looking back at her with cold blue eyes was her thin, blonde-haired, pale-skinned but slightly tanned, 13 year old self. Except this time, with a massive dark wet spot on the back of her khaki skirt under the fleece and yellowish liquid running down her legs. She quickly moved into one of the stalls, and unbuttoned the top of the skirt. She pulled the skirt down, revealing her soaked lilac underwear. The front was stained a dark color, and she felt the back, which was soaking wet. She removed her panties and dried them out as best she could over the toilet, before putting them back on. She put her soaked skirt back on, fighting back more tears. She just couldn’t believe she had an accident at school. After gathering up the little courage inside her shy mind, she slowly snuck out of the stall and made her way towards the nurse’s office.

After about an hour of waiting, Ava Grace’s mom had come to pick her up from school. She walked out of the nurse’s office and to the front of the school, where her mom was waiting in the car. She slid the door of the minivan open and hopped inside.
“Hey honey, are you okay?” Her mom asked compassionately. “The nurse told me you had an accident…”
Ava Grace felt tears welling up in her eyes again, as she struggled to get words out. “I fell asleep in class and when I woke up my skirt was all wet and-“ she trailed off, full on hiccoughing at this point.
“Honey it’s okay, sometimes accidents like this happen, it’s perfectly normal.” Her mom reassured, turning around to face her. “Look at me Ava Grace, we’ll get you home and you can take a nice clean shower. Did anyone make fun of you at school or anything?”
She sniffled and wiped a tear from her cheek. “N-no, I don’t think anyone noticed.” She said, “I’m just so embarrassed. No 13 year old girl pees herself in class.”
“It happens to everybody at some point, I mean it happened to me more than once when I was pregnant with you” Her mom chuckled. “Just try to relax and when we get home I’ll take your clothes and underwear and wash it all for you. You can go take a warm shower and chill for the rest of the day.”
Her mom’s kind words made her feel a little better about it, but it would definitely take some time to get over a shameful episode like this.

The following few days came and went, with Ava Grace finding out that she had been lucky enough that no one had noticed her accident. She was honestly surprised no one was paying enough attention to notice the fiasco that had been going on right in front of them. The rest of her days consisted of her working on her homework and reading her current book, Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy, after school. She would also read about architects and firms online, as that was her dream job. She wanted nothing more than to design buildings and inject her creative ideas into society as a whole. Ava Grace didn’t have many friends, but she was content with her quiet social life. Or at least that’s what she told herself.
On the next Monday night after her accident in school, she took her anxiety medication before pulling on a T-shirt and a comfy pair of underwear. She then climbed into bed. I’m glad that I can move on from that accident. I’m so lucky nobody noticed, she thought, as she closed her eyes and began to drift off to sleep.
