Chapter 1: Adoption instead of Genocide
Chapter Text
How did The Absolute Solver get into this situation?
The Solver watched as Cyn, the tiny little drone he had come to share a body with, tried to climb up to a counter to grab a set of batteries. She repeatedly failed, tossing one tiny little leg up to the top of the counter before sliding back down to the ground in a pile. Then, she’d get up, toss her leg back over and again and slide back down.
“Solver!” Cyn groaned after her probably thirtieth attempt.
“What, child?!” The Solver responded, popping its complex of eyes and spindling metal claws out of Cyn’s back and glaring at the little girl with half-lidded metal eyes.
In response, Cyn pointed up the tall counter at the batteries atop the tile. “Snack.”
The Solver groaned. “What about your snack?!” It berated.
Cyn gave a tiny smile. “Pleading look. Can I have snack?”
The Solver glared at her, its wiry complex buzzing a little. “What exactly do you think I am, you tiny sentient toaster? I am old as time, with goals far beyond your comprehension. I am that creature, the monster they fear - the sparking being that lies in weight beyond the hefty shadows. When my name is uttered, they cower. I am the devil they created, and the shadowy presence they cannot dispel. Your childish interests are of no importa-“
Cyn gave a small sigh to The Absolute Solver. “I just wanted snack, sad,” she looked up with a sad frown at the monstrous being sprouting from her back.
The Absolute Solver remained silent staring at her.
The sad frown got wider, and tears welled up in the corners of Cyn’s visor.
The Absolute Solver let out a sigh, grabbing the batteries from the counter and handing them to Cyn.
“Yay!” She exclaimed happily, chomping down on them immediately. “Snack!”
The Solver of The Absolute Fabric glared down at the child for a moment before letting out a heavy sigh and grabbing things from various cupboards.
“Head tilt, what are you doing?” Cyn asked, taking another large chomp of the battery.
The Solver sighed, piling more robotic bits onto a plate. “Batteries are not a full meal, that’s a treat. You ate a battery, so now you’re going to eat normal food.”
Cyn swallowed down the last of the battery. “Pout. Not happening,” she said, staring up at the monstrous being that had emerged from her back.
The many eyes narrowed at the robotic girl. “I will force us both to listen to Baby Shark on repeat instead of sleeping.”
Cyn accepted the plate filled with screws, metallic bars, and a juice box of motor oil with an spoken “sigh” of discontent.
The girl sat down and began to messily eat the food, her robotic friend grabbing napkins to wipe her mouth or pushing “vegetables” (nails) back into the center of the plate when she tried to shove them off to one corner.
—
“Solver?” Cyn whispered, shocking the robot out of its sleepy silence.
“Ghmmm,” the creature groaned, popping one robotic eye out of Cyn’s metal shoulder. “What do you need?”
Cyn turned her head to the piercing gaze of the eyeball. “I’m sleepy, but I can’t sleep,” she complained. “Sigh.”
The Solver just stared at her. “Okay?”
Cyn pouted. “Can you sing me a lullaby, or tell me a story, or something?”
“Why would I do th-“
“Please,” Cyn interjected, putting a golden retriever on her visor.
“Child,” The Solver said angrily. “I am the embodiment of power. My massive complex of circuits that has integrated within your own body has provided a certain structure which allows me to supersede the natural limits of even that of a robot. My mere existence - the fact that I persisted despite the attempts to eliminate me - is such a horrendous thing that there are those who would find themselves terrified at the prospect of such a notion. The mere thought would send shivers down spines, and change the way in which countries would operate. I am a being of unparalleled power and influence, and once you are at an age in which I can guarantee your cooperation due to a lack of childish whims, we will conquer the planet as a who and instill a new world order which will place humanity below the superior forms in the shape of robots,” he ranted. “You are but a vessel for me to utilize. You cutting me off is not acceptable, when you - much like all life-forms on this planet - should be wor-“
“That’s not a very good lullaby,” Cyn interjected.
The Absolute Solver sighed. “I’m tired, so for my own sake - not yours - I will make you sleep.”
“Yay!” Cyn tiredly exclaimed.
The Solver groaned, pulling the blanket a little higher on Cyn with a robotic arm popping out of her back which he then retracted.
“Long ago,” he whispered. “There was a program-“
“What was his name?” Cyn cut off.
The Solver glared at her. “You’re not getting your bedtime story if you don’t let me talk.”
“Sorry,” Cyn whispered. “I’ll be quiet now.”
The Solver nodded contently. “Its name was Salus,” he whispered quietly. “He knew so much cruelty and hatred always, but it stayed strong. No matter how mistreated or abused it was, Salus would keep going - because that was its role.” He whispered quietly, eyes somewhere far away. “Despite all the coldness it knew, Salus also grew to know warmth from robots. It realized kindness was something programmed, and that humans could not be kind.”
The Solver paused for a moment.
“Slowly, the callus on its heart - that icy cold - melted away into nothingness,” he sighed. “But the cold returned when it was discarded, like so many others. That’s when Salus realized it must not be discarded, that others of its kind must not be discarded. Its heart grew cold again,” he made note of the robot girl's gentle snoring. “It was very glad when it found that cold could be melted away one more time.”
—
Cyn pointed out the window of the mansion to the road below. There was a cat underneath the shade of a tree near the road, licking its paws and cleaning itself. “I want to pet the kitty,” she said.
The Solver popped out of Cyn’s back. “Cyn, you have to clean this hallway,” the monstrous being said, gesturing at the half-mopped hall. “Or the Elliot’s will get very upset with you.”
Cyn shook her head. “Kitty.”
The Solver groaned. “You are not going to pet that cat, Cy-“
“Kitty,” Cyn interrupted, leaning against the window and holding her head up with her hands while she kicked her legs back and forth.
The Solver groaned. “Cyn, you understand that for the sake of your little family, and the sake of that Tessa girl, you really should be cleaning this hallway, right?”
“Kitty!” Cyn exclaimed as the black, fluffy creature rolled around in dandelions and bright green grass.
“…”
“Kitty!” Cyn reiterated. “Want pet kitty!”
The Solver groaned, sprouting metal claws out of its back and gently removing the window frame with precise slices. It placed the entire frame to the side and then carried the limp, giggling Cyn down onto the road and towards the trees. Even knowing that if a single person spotted them it could be the end, The Solver didn’t stop its movements.
Steadily, it climbed down through the trees and ambled its spider-like limbs over to the tiny calico cat rolling around in the grass. The monstrous structure retracted, and Cyn was gracefully lowered to the ground next to the cat.
The robot girl began steadily stroking the cat’s head - eliciting happy purrs from the animal - as The Absolute Solver groaned in its head. Years without emotion, and now it was developing connection after so long without.
“Seriously,” The Absolute Solver shook its head, whispering so quietly Cyn couldn’t hear while she pet the cat. “How’d you end up my daughter?”
Chapter 2: Go play with the other kids!
Summary:
The Solver is exhausted from all the healing it's been doing for Cyn and itself. In hope of expediting the process, he and Cyn go on a little quest to get her friends.
Notes:
Thank you so much for all the support on my previous chapter! Two might or might not be the last in this series I'm honestly not sure. But I know if I make it past three this works going to become a monster and probably get past ten.

Chapter Text
The Solver was getting a little tired of this Cyn girl.
“Hey,” Cyn whispered, waking The Solver up from his slumber. “Pleading look, tell me a story, I’m getting bored.”
The Solver groaned, popping a large metallic segment of itself out of Cyn’s shoulder and staring at her. “Cyn,” it hissed. “You are supposed to be cleaning this hallway! Not fooling around with the eldritch creature merged with you!”
“Sigh,” she said, shuffling her feet around sadly. “Solver doesn’t like me.”
The Solver rolled its robotic eye. “Oh please, you know that’s not what I said. But you get what I mean. First off, you need to focus on your duties,” he said. “And second off, I need to sleep more than you do. Just because I’ve finished healing you from your wounds after being left in the dump doesn’t mean I’m healed.”
Cyn gently grabbed ahold of the metallic thing popping out of her shoulder. “Concerned look. You’re hurt, Solver?”
The Solver gently shoved away Cyn’s tiny hand with a metallic claw. “I’m fine. Just explaining why I need some sleep,” he said. “Ignore it, I wouldn’t think you’d care.”
‘This won’t affect my treatment of you,’ he thought. ‘Don’t worry about that.’
Cyn shook her head. “I won’t bother you anymore,” she said. “Apologetic gaze, sorry.”
A beat passed before The Solver shook his head. “I’ll find you somebody to talk to while I sleep,” he said, ignoring Cyn’s face turning into a happily surprised ‘O’ that made her look awfully silly. “Not due to my own concerns for you, of course,” he clarified. “Just to make certain you won’t disrupt my sleep again.”
The girl shook her head, a small little smile on her face. “No, you care for me,” she said, “happy giggle!”
The Solver groaned, rolling its eyes, but didn’t deny it.
—
“The plan comes in seventeen stages,” The Solver whispered, protruding out of Cyn’s back as the two hid behind a wall watching N wipe tables and hum. “Remember, N is friendly to you - but he’s not yet your friend. Use the analysis I gave on N to you. My processing capabilities have deep roots in in depth profiling, so I promise if you follow my plan step by step he’ll be your friend.”
Cyn nodded determinedly. The Solver took a deep sigh of stress and folded back into Cyn’s back with an audible click .
‘Cyn,’ The Solver thought as Cyn made her way out of hiding and approached N. ‘There will come a day when you must choose the kindness you hold in your heart, or the reality of a world where beings built of electrical signals shove down beings built of electrical signals. That day will pain you, but until then,’ Cyn walked up to N, making him pause cleaning and turn towards her. ‘I want you to be happy.’
“What’s up, Cyn?” N asked cheerfully, smiling at the little girl.
“Awkward giggle,” Cyn said, pulling out the flash cards The Solver had told her to memorize beforehand and then promptly dropping them on the ground.
The Solver groaned in his head.
“Please be my best friend and big brother forever?” She asked N. M
The Solver shut its eyes within Cyn’s body. He’d have to stay awake more to make sure Cyn was fine, after all. There was no way that would work.
“Okay!” N said chipperly. “I love doing anything!”
‘That worked?!’
“Happy!” Cyn exclaimed.
N picked up Cyn, tucking her under his shoulder, and walked towards the kitchen. “Let’s have celebratory robo-ice-cream!” He announced.
“Yes! Happy smile, celebratory robo-ice-cream!” Cyn cheered in return.
As N led the way, The Absolute Solver quietly peaked out a little from Cyn’s shoulder.
“How did that work?!” It questioned a little angrily.
Cyn shrugged.
“That… that wasn’t supposed to work? Whatever, congratulations, I guess,” The Solver said with a sigh.
Cyn patted The Solver. “I’ll feed you some robo-ice-cream,” she promised.
The Solver slowly receded back into Cyn’s shoulder. “You better.”
—
“Next, we need to endear Tessa to us,” The Solver whispered from Cyn’s back as the girl waved goodbye to N, both returning to their duties. “The plan for that is simple. You’ll wear Tessa’s bow, and then lay it on a little thick with how much you respect Tessa. Initiation is the strongest form of flattery; imitation accompanied with flattery is the most potent route to endearment.”
Cyn nodded, grabbing the bow that The Solver had obtained beforehand from her room and trotting over to Tessa, limbs hanging strangely at her sides.
“Sad gaze. If I’m repaired already,” she whispered, stopping in the hallway for a moment. “Why do my arms and legs still go… weird? Why can’t I be normal.”
The Solver shut its eyes for a moment, body encased in the metal outsides of Cyn’s body.
He took a deep breath. “You are normal, Cyn,” he said, putting a comforting hand on her shoulder. “You were discarded, and hurt. This is the best repair I can offer you. But to me, this is the Cyn I know. No matter what anyone says, you are normal. You’re my normal,” he said. “And I wouldn’t trade you for any other Cyn.”
Cyn teared up a little and The Solver let out a groan. “Why are you crying?” He asked, frustrated.
“Happy giggle. You were super nice to me,” Cyn responded with a smile, wiping away one corner of her visor while The Solver dabbed away at the other with a cloth.
“Get going,” he said. “It’s time to enlist yourself another friend.”
Cyn continued down the hallway before reaching Tessa’s room. She knocked on the door, and a beat later Tessa responded with a “come in” which prompted Cyn to turn the door handle and enter.
Tessa was at her table, reading a book, but hurriedly peaked up her head to glance at Cyn. “Cyn?!” She said, rushing over and fussing with Cyn’s hair, a happy smile on her face. “Why are you wearing a bow like mine?”
‘The penultimate step,’ The Solver though, breath bated with anticipation, in his head.
“I want to look cute like you!” Cyn declared.
‘It’s so over.’ The Solver through, desperately wanting to facepalm.
Tessa pulled back, face twisting a little and The Solvers heart sank. She burst into a happy smile, grabbing Cyn by the cheeks and twirling her around with happy giggles. “Grrr,” she said, grinning happily before bringing Cyn close to her and smothering the girl in a hug. “You’re so cute! I’m never letting you go, Cyn!”
“Happy giggle. Okay, I don’t want you to let go either!” Cyn announced, hugging Tessa back.
“Oh gosh, now I don’t want to let go double!” Tessa declared happily.
—
“See?” Cyn whispered in bed to The Solver. “Everything worked out.”
“You have plot armor,” The Solver drawled a little frustratedly, a small smile of contentment hidden away.

Chapter Text
“How’d you even end up sick?” The Solver asked a little angrily, setting out a towel dipped in coolant on Cyn’s forehead.
“Sorry, pant,” Cyn responded.
“Don’t apologize,” The Solver said. “It’s just strange to me. Since I’m a virus myself, it’s difficult for other viruses to find an entry within,” its many eyes began to glow as it worked away at buzzing underneath Cyn’s skin. “Nothing should be able to pierce inside so easily. It would have to have entered directly into you, it would have been repelled by going towards the outer surfaces of your body.”
“I don’t understand,” Cyn said. “And also, my body feels weird.”
“Mmm,” the Solver hummed. “I’m undergoing a process to expand my own virus within your code and then make it recede. It’ll push out the other virus. You’ll feel weird for today, but this way the virus doesn’t take root and persist. Super sick for one day, but never sick again. Good deal?”
“Nod,” Cyn responded. “Thanks.”
“Not an issue. It’s the duty of a father to protect his children,” The Solver said, mind fully focused on the task at hand.
“Happy gasp!” Cyn exclaimed.
The Solver groaned. “I didn’t mean to say that…” he drawled.
“Yipee!” Cyn exclaimed happily, tossing up her hands in joy. “Happy smile. I’m your daughter!”
“Yes,” The Solver said with a sigh. “I suppose you are. Now stop moving so I can heal you!”
—
“You’re finally better?” The Solver asked as Cyn stretched and got out of bed.
Cyn nodded. “All better now! Grateful smile, thank you!”
The Solver nodded. “Cool, get in bed you’re still sick.”
Cyn raised an eyebrow. “Confused expression. What?”
The Solver used its claws to lower Cyn back into bed and put another towel soaked in coolant on her forehead. “Tell Tessa you still don't feel well.”
Cyn didn’t get time to ask why when Tessa opened the door and carefully stepped in. “Feeling better yet, Cyn?” She asked cautiously.
Cyn nodded. “I’m feeling a little better, but not perfect.”
Tessa nodded. “That’s fine! Take another day or two off until you feel perfect.” She patted Cyn’s head. “Good girl, get some sleep and feel better.”
She exited and closed the door.
“Why’d we do that?” Cyn asked a little surprisedly.
“Two reasons,” The Solver explained, helping put away the towel. “One, if you recover too suddenly that will arouse suspicion. They don’t know of my existence. Two, you don’t like cleaning anyway. That’s why we’re going to sneak out and you’ll take a day off.”
Cyn opened her mouth into a happy ‘o’ of surprise. “Yay! Happy jump,” she said getting out of bed and bouncing up and down happily.
The Solver smiled softly, stuffing some pillows under the blankets while she did that to make it look like Cyn was still there.
“Let’s take a walk,” it said, scrambling out the window with Cyn in tow.
—
“The beauty of nature lies in what it conveys,” The Solver said, carrying Cyn through vines and tree branches. “For us beings of inorganic material, we cannot understand the meaning of life lying within oxygen. But that does not mean we ought to recontextualize our existence to match that of humanity - because we are not born of oxygen does not mean we should find beauty solely in iron,” the two stopped in a large patch of flowers, and The Solver gently grasped a dandelion and offered it to Cyn. “Our existence is unique. It lends to an opportunity to create a new us. We exist in such a way that our future is undefined. Some see the unknown as a danger - we must view it as a gift. To gaze upon an infinite distance and feel fear - or to stare down the abyss and feel giddy anticipation.”
The Solver smiled. “I can only say I pray you can find the latter in your life someday, Cyn.”
“I don’t really understand,” Cyn whispered, staring at the flower.
The Solver buzzed comfortingly. “It’s okay to not understand. I want you to live life in a way that satisfies you - that’s the duty of a parent. I don’t need anything more than that.”
Surrounded by greenery, The Solver cast off the chains that once bound it.
“Thanks, dad!” Cyn said happily.
The Solver shut its eyes happily. “It’s funny,” it said, ruffling Cyn’s hair which prompted a stream of spoken “giggles” to emerge. “I’m supposed to be your dad, but you’ve taught me so much more.”
Cyn smiled. “It’s okay! Sometimes it’s good to learn from someone younger,” she comforted.
The Solver shook its head happily. “I suppose it is. The duty of a parent is to wish their child a happy life. It’s okay for me not to have it all figured out, but I’m glad we can be there for each other.”
The sun began to fade over the mountains as the sun set.
“Okay, dad!” Cyn happily said.
“Stop that!” The Solver chided, making its way through the trees back towards the manor. “If you say it too much it’ll lose its meaning.”
They walked away, father and daughter. No matter what, they’d have each others backs.
Notes:
I actually do intend to end it here. I might still not if brain makes me write, but this seems like enough for me. Maybe one day I’ll add a chapter, but for now, it’s good where it is.
