The Bridge

Summary:

The Trio were met with one option to get to their destination.

To take a rickety old wooden bridge over the ocean that connected the island they were currently on to the one that they needed to be on.

"D-Do we really have to-a use... t-that?" Luigi stuttered, feeling VERY uncomfortable with the state of the bridge...

A gust of wind blew by, and caused the entire bridge to swing violently, and one of the planks to fall into the ocean below.

"It'll be fine! Let's-a go!" Mario said without a care in the world, walking off onto the bridge, the violent crunch and creak of the bridge the moment his boot hit the wood causing Luigi to cringe.

"M-maybe we could use Trio Plane..." Luigi suggested.

Paper Mario explained that it would never make it across the whole gap, and followed Mario onto the bridge, his boot causing no affect on the bridge due to his lack of weight.

Luigi still didn't feel good about it, but at least they only had to worry about the weight of two people...

"Come on Luigi!" Mario called back to his brother.

Luigi hesitantly approached the bridge, and carefully placed one foot on it, the dramatic creak of the wood causing him to yelp and jump back.

"Don't worry bro! It's-a fine! Watch!" Mario said, and in an attempt to comfort him, started jumping up and down on the bridge to showcase its stability.

It started shaking violently, causing Paper Mario to flail around as he tried to keep his balance, and Luigi to utterly panic from the sidelines.

"See? It's-a totally fi-" Mario was cut off as the ropes connecting the bridge to both islands snapped, causing it fall out from under him and Paper Mario.

"M-Mama Mia!" He exclaimed, both him and his paper counterpart flailing their arms rapidly as they tried to avoid falling.

"M-MARIO!" Luigi screamed.

Adrenaline overwrote fear, and he dived off of the island toward Paper Mario specifically.

He was worried for both of them for sure, but Paper Mario was... well, Paper Mario. If he fell in that water, he was a goner.

Luigi grabbed Paper Mario, and attempted to throw him back toward the island, but his paper brother resisted being thrown, instead forming himself into a parachute, and locking onto Luigi to help him float safely down into the water...

...as opposed to Mario, who they heard loudly splash below them.

The whole way down, Luigi and Paper Mario fought over trying to save one another, until they finally landed in the water, and sunk to the bottom...

...where Paper Mario was totally fine.

"H-how are you okay?! You're-a made out of-a paper!" Luigi exclaimed in bewilderment, his voice distorted by the water encompassing them.

Paper Mario shrugged, and explained that people swam a lot back in his world, and nothing bad ever happened to them.

The green plumber stared for a moment longer, questioning the logistics of that, before letting out a sigh of relief.

He was just thankful that his brother was okay...

...oh wait oh no his brother

He jumped and yelped, spinning around to see Mario buried in the sand of the ocean floor up to his shoulders, dazed, and babbling nonsense.
