Work Text:
It was date night, which means Emily and JJ have to cross something off of their date bucket list. With the stress of work, the two try to plan out a date night twice a month to allow them some time to themselves, it was one of the things that kept their relationship super strong.
JJ looked up from her phone, “We could go to that carnival that is down at the local park.”
“Ooh, That sounds fun!” Emily said happily, crawling across from her spot on the couch over to JJ’s. “I could go for some funnel cake, it has been ages since I last had some.” She placed a kiss on JJ’s lips before lying in her lap.
Twirling a piece of Emily’s hair in her hand she smiled. “Rides? Food? Games?” She paused, staring down into her wife’s beautiful brown eyes. “Sounds like a perfect stress-free date night, plus we can cross this off our bucket list!”
Emily rolled off the couch onto the ground slowly, making sure not to hurt herself or JJ. As she fell to the ground with a soft thud, she heard JJ giggling in the background.
“Why did you do that silly?” JJ asked in between giggles.
Standing up from her spot on the floor, Emily smiled. “Because I knew it would make you laugh.”
JJ blushed as she got up from the couch. “Don’t profile me, Emily.”
Emily shrugged as she slipped on her shoes. “Profiling you is what made me decide I wanted you to be my wife, so I will not ever stop profiling you.” Her statement just made JJ’s face even more red and another small laugh escaped from her. “Now, let's go get some yummy funnel cake and of course have fun on our childish date.”

When they arrived at the carnival it was fairly busy. Plenty of children were running around unsupervised, which stressed the two women out a tad, but they were not going to let that distract them from the fun they were about to have.
Walking through all the stands and rides, Emily quickly spotted the funnel cake stand. She grabbed JJ’s hand and took off running through the crowd towards it, dragging JJ behind her. “Yesssss,” She hummed, “Can we get it with powdered sugar? Please?” Emily begged looking at her wife who seemed to be a bit winded from their sprint to the stand.
JJ put her hands on her knees to catch her breath. “Yea, Em, whatever you want,” She huffed. “Next time a heads up before you take off sprinting.” JJ stood up and chuckled at how excited and childlike Emily was being, it was rare to see her like this anymore.
Emily pumped her fists into the air and gave JJ a hug. “You are the best wife ever, you know that right?”
With a smile, JJ nodded. “And the luckiest.”
Once they got their funnel cake, they walked around looking at all of the different rides and games. Emily had gotten powder sugar all over her cheeks, so JJ wiped it off with her thumb quickly sneaking a kiss while doing it. As Emily shoved another piece of funnel cake into her mouth, she spotted a giant black cat hanging from one of the stands.
“I need that.” She whispered, staring intently at the prize.
JJ looked over at her to see what she was staring at, and then she noticed. “I can win it for you, I am sure whatever game it is at, isn’t too hard.” Shit. It was one of the most heavily rigged games at every fair, shooting out the red star.
The two of them walked over to the game and Emily stood back while JJ gave the man three dollars, to play the game. “The rules are simple, you only have 50 shots to get rid of this entire red star.” The attendant grumbled, showing JJ the star before hanging it up.
Emily watched as JJ fired the gun at the star. She was one of the most accurate shooters in the FBI, she could win this game for her. Right? Nope. Wrong!
“Ugh,” JJ mumbled setting the gun down, looking at her failure. There was a whole corner of the star intact. “How badly do you want that cat?” She asked looking over at Emily, who was eating the last piece of her funnel cake.
She held her index finger over her lips as she finished chewing. “Pretty bad, but if you wanna play a different game we can move on.”
JJ shook her head and gave the man three more dollars. There had to be a strategy to this game and she was going to figure it out, so she could win this damn cat for Emily. This time she tried to outline the star instead of starting from the middle. When she ran out of ammo, the attendant handed her back the white piece of paper, showing her the small piece of red that remained on the paper.
After try number three, she had the strategy down perfectly. This was going to be the time she won this silly stuffed cat for Emily.
“JJ, we can try a different game, love. I don’t need this cat.” Emily offered, watching as her wife dug in her wallet for three more dollars.
JJ shook her head. “No. I am going to win you this cat.” This time as she picked up the gun, she counted her shots, aiming each one as if she were in FBI training camp all over again. Shot after shot, she took off small pieces of the star. “48. 49. 50!” JJ whispered as she took off the final corner of the star.
As the attendant brought the piece of paper over he smiled. “Congrats, you are the first person to win this game this week. Which prize would you like?” Emily pointed up to the black cat and grinned as he handed it over to JJ. “Thanks for playing.”
She skipped over to JJ, throwing her plate in the trash on her way over. “I love you,” Emily whispered as she kissed JJ on the lips before taking the huge cat into her arms. “What should we name it?”
“Hmmmm,” JJ hummed with a small chuckle, “What about sugar?”
Emily tilted her head, that didn’t make any sense, but then she looked down at the cat and realized she had gotten powdered sugar on its black fur. “That’s perfect!” Emily laughed.
The couple walked around the carnival holding each other's hands, contemplating which ride they should go on before they went home for the night. JJ had a perfect idea, the Ferris wheel.
This time she dragged Emily halfway across the park until she found the end of the line. “This is payback for making me run earlier,” JJ said with a grin.
Emily smirked as she slowed down her heavy breathing. “Oh, I’ll show you-”
“Emily Elizabeth! Not at the park, the children could hear you.” JJ scolded, she knew exactly where Emily planned on taking that sentence. “Ooh, Ooh we’re next!” She quickly changed her demeanor as the line moved up.
When they sat down in the seat, they placed their giant cat down in the middle, so they wouldn’t lose it. As the ride started up, Emily grabbed hold of JJ’s hand. She was not the biggest fan of the Ferris wheel, but she would push herself through the fear for her.
JJ looked over and tilted her head at Emily’s worried expression. “Em, what’s wrong?”
Looking up at JJ, Emily sighed. “I hate Ferris wheels.” She whispered. “They are just so sketchy.”
Emily shut her eyes, as she felt JJ wrap an arm around her. “Then why did you let me drag you on here?”
“Because you won me the cat, so I figured I would repay the favor,” Emily mumbled, opening one eye, to see that they were stopped at the very top. “The sunset looks beautiful though,” She said as she opened the other eye, feeling a bit better now that JJ was holding her.
JJ was too focused on Emily. The sun was hitting her at the perfect angle. Her brown eyes were glowing, her lips were parted and there was a small spot of powdered sugar right below her nose. “Not as beautiful as you though,” JJ hummed, leaning to kiss Emily.
The kiss they shared at the top of the Ferris wheel, didn’t last long, but it was filled with love, hope, and desire. As they pulled away, the world around them seemed to disappear, leaving just the two of them suspended in the sky. However, the gentle sway of the Ferris wheel spooked Emily so she grabbed the bar in front of her quickly. JJ just laughed and brushed the sugar from under her nose.
Date nights were the best nights. No work. No kids. No stress. Just the two of them doing whatever their hearts desire.
