Work Text:
Paper Mario took the reveal about his whole world being a book really well.
...at first, anyways.
At the time, he just blindly accepted it and moved on.
Later, he started to think about the implications of that...
His world was just stories for 3D people to read?...
Are all books like this?
If not all books, what made his book special?
And... He recalled something.. unsettling.
He approached Mario and Luigi, and explained his thoughts.
Back in the book, when he was in Shiver City... Herringway said that he wanted to write a book about his adventures, and name it Paper Mario...
...so if his world was a book in the 3D world about his adventures... was there also a world inside Herringway's book?
Mario and Luigi looked at each other uncomfortably, hands going to chins or pressed against temples as they thought about it...
Paper Mario's eyes widened further.
And if there is, what stops it there? What if there's a world inside the world inside Herringway's book which is inside the Mysterious Book in the 3D World?
Mario groaned uncomfortably, and Luigi drove his finger rougher against his temple as he tried to think harder.
Paper Mario threw his arms out and looked around him.
And how do they know that THIS world is real?! What if it's a book too!
"Hey! WE have to-a be real! We're not-a made out of-a paper!" Mario argued.
"But, what if our world is-a like, a video game, or something else not-a made of-a paper?" Luigi added.
Mario stared blankly at Luigi for a moment, trying to think of an argument...
Before failing, and collapsing onto the ground dramatically, causing the other two to jump in surprise.
"Mama mia..."
The two stared at Mario in concern for a moment, until Luigi lit up as he remembered something. "...Hey, actually, I saw a ghost reading a book titled-a Paper Mario back in that-a mansion-"
"YOU MEAN THERE'S-A TWO OF PAPER MARIO'S-A WORLD JUST IN OUR-A WORLD?!" Mario exclaimed in horror.
Paper Mario soon suggested dropping the subject, for the sake of their sanity.
But even after promising to never speak of it again, they never truly stopped thinking about it.
