Work Text:
I am a cat.
My fur is sleek, well groomed. I take care of every hair on my back.
Sometimes my human, she pets me. She loves me, calls me names like her pretty princess, or her little spoiled cutie. I do not mind these names, for she is whom takes care of me, who feeds my sharp maw the pebbles from her palm.
Though, she starts to change.
Unlike the other humans who I presume are girls, she cuts her hair short. I will sit in the doorway, watching her stare in the mirror at her face. There is a strange, longing look. I do not understand.
Some days, she seems to stare at the breasts on her chest, a type of anger burning in her eyes that I do not get. I will watch her though my green eyes as a groom my coat, my long fur has always been long, but I see that maybe my human prefers if her own is short.
I am confused. I walk calmly to the neighbours fence, the wise old cat. He has lived longer than the stones that prick my pads, he has seen the rivers form and the growth of the humans that pet and feed.
"Wise old cat," I meow, dipping my head to him. He is sleepy, he is old, but he takes his time to aknowledge my need for growth. My yearn for information. "I seek your help. I seek your advice, wise old cat."
Wise old cat breaths raspily. His breath stinks.
"You may ask what you please." He rasps.
I sit back on my haunches, long fur flowing neatly behind me.
"Wise old cat, you are older than the stones that prick my pads, you have seen the rivers form and the growth of the humans that pet and feed." I see his cloudy gaze stare. I do not hesitate to stare back.
"I must ask. My human is changing. She cut her hair short unlike the other female humans, she wears a pelt that squeezes her chest to make it small. She stares at herself in the mirror, longing for something that I do not understand." I explain gently. "I believe my human may be trying to turn male." The wise old cat ponders my words, he seems to be thinking.
"Humans are strange, different creatures. They make rotten desicions." He explains, voice croaking and rumbling through the still air. I tilt my head. "My human did not make a rotten desicion. I would like to know what is happening with her." I explain.
"She does not understand what it is to be a creature," He explained, the cracks in his dry lips speaking his old, old age.
"You must fix your human, as she is turning against herself."
I stand, the stones younger than the wise old cat pricking my pads, the sounds that the wise old cat heard as the rivers formed ringing in my soft ears.
"You are wrong, wise old cat." I dip my head to his matted, rotten smelling fur. "My human did not do anything wrong. I see your years have made you bitter. The wise old cat has lost his wise advice, and I no longer need your help. My human feeds me, grooms me and loved me. A pelt or haircut does not change what their personality is like." I explain.
The days go by. My human slowly starts seeming happier, the more male they look. I notice that they use this prodding, sharp stick to poke in their thigh, and that they have a deeper voice now.
Though I know that he changed, he is still my human. He pets me. He grooms me. He calls me his pretty princess. He calls me his spoiled cutie. I never minded these names.
I still purr for him, and ever since his voice lowered and his eyes had gotten less dull, I had seen his true self.
The wise old cat never was wise. The only thing that mattered to me was the fact that my human never changed. He has stayed the same, the only difference is the voice that rings through my soft ears.
Despite being older than the rocks that prick my pads, watching the rivers form and the growth of the humans that pet and feed, the wise old cat lost his favourful attributes as a new world was opened to him.
This does not make the wise old cat wise, it makes him just the old cat.
So as I groom my long fur, staring at her through my green eyes, my human no longer stares longingly in the mirror. He no longer looks at his body in a type of rage I do not understand. He is happy.
This is my human.
The only thing that changed was his appearance.
And though I do not understand,
My love will not change.
I am a cat.
