Work Text:

What time was it again?

10 am?

Huh, not bad.

But not very surprising coming from Kel. He often slept a little more when he could. He groaned a little as he opened his phone to see the exact time—he had spent too many minutes staring at the ceiling since waking up, and barely got out of bed. The warmth of the duvet was very appealing, but quickly lost interest when Hero wasn't around. He was hungry, anyway.

It was by stretching his arms that he arrived in the living room, quickly seeing his brother in the kitchen from over the counter. His back was to him, probably preparing something good, as usual. The sweet smell of toast wafting through the room seemed to confirm it.

“Ah, good morning Kel!” He said as he turned around, seeing that Kel was awake. He held a plate full of toasted bread in one hand. “Just in time, uh?”

“Yeah, yeah,” he replied, still a little sleepy. He almost stumbled until he was standing in front of Hero, sniffing the scent. Oh yeah, they were perfectly toasted. “How long have you been up?”

“An hour, I think.”

“Early bird,” Kel rolled his eyes.

“9 am is not being an early bird.”

“For a Sunday, yes.”

“Well, maybe if you—” But Hero never finished his sentence, getting cut off by a kiss from Kel. It was his way of stopping a conversation that was boring him. Depending on the topic, it could quickly become annoying, this habit of kissing him as an escape. Fortunately now, their conversation wasn't important, and so they let themselves drown in it. The kiss lasted a little longer than either of them expected, and when they finally pulled away, a stupid smile was on each of their faces. “I hate when you do that,” Hero said, without the slightest conviction.

“Yeah, I believe you.”

Kel then grabbed the plate in his hands and took it with him into the living room, like the impatient thief that he was. On Sundays, they used to have breakfast on the couch while watching TV. It was almost a tradition now. And who were they to deviate from a tradition?

He sat down, placing the plate on the coffee table, seeing out of the corner of his eye his brother joining him, with a bottle of fruit juice and a jar of jam. He placed them next to the plate, making a little room by pushing the few books scattered on top of the table.

“You can turn on the TV while I bring the rest,” he suggested. Oh, yeah he wasn't wrong. Kel grabbed the remote and turned on the TV, wincing as the first images appeared. Hero liked watching the TV news, but not him. Too depressing, he wasn't interested—usually. Well, he hadn't been a kid for a long time now, sure, but... to be honest, he preferred cartoons. Or any sports show, really. As long as it wasn't saddening news.

He sounded a little sour, huh? Maybe it was because he had been up—out of bed for literally five minutes. Who knows.

He skipped from channel to channel, when Hero came back with more stuff in his hands: glasses, butter, and knives for said butter and jam. Oh how he couldn't wait to take a bite.

“So? Found something to watch?”

“Nah, not yet,” Kel replied, reaching for the bottle of juice. “Unless you want to watch stupid politics, I guess.”

His brother sighed. It wasn't stupid politics, but he couldn't really blame him... could he?

Although he was twenty-one, he was just as interested in this topic as when he was sixteen. Which was probably concerning, but that wasn't the point today. They had to have a chill time while eating breakfast, not start pointing out to Kel that he should be more interested in these things now that he was an adult. Well, although it was true.

Hero looked up and seemed to be thinking.

“Hey, wasn't it today that they said they were launching the new season of Captain Spaceboy?”

“W—what, really?!” He was suddenly interested in the new topic, how strange.

“Yes, I think so. I believe the channel was...” Immediately, Kel switched the channel and luckily for him, the show had just started—a very recent adaptation of the adventures of Captain Spaceboy. This was what he had assumed when he saw the opening credits, though. “It’s really a good timing,” Hero commented. He reached out and grabbed the two glasses. “Here, since you’ve been holding the bottle for a while, pour us some.”

Oh. Yeah, true he had the bottle of fruit juice in his hand since earlier, but hadn't done anything with it yet. Kel served them both before sinking more comfortably into the couch, his drink in his hands. Well... the episode had barely started, and he seemed already immersed in it. His brother laughed seeing him already deep into the story, while sipping his own juice.

Him, um... Hero wasn't very into cartoons now, but he liked it when he had the opportunity to watch some together. It reminded him a little of when they were younger.

His attention was drawn a little by what was happening on the screen, before he leaned over to the coffee table and started tending to the toasted bread. The best time to spread butter was while it was still hot, after all.

“Here,” he said, while holding out a slice of toast towards Kel. It was covered in both butter and jam, and ready to eat. He grabbed it and thanked him, not waiting any longer to bite into it while returning to watch TV. Hero made himself a slice of toast too, this time with only a layer of butter on it.

“I still don't understand how you can like eating your toast with just butter on it, dude,” his brother said.

“It's not as bland as you think, you know. You should try.”

“Ew, in your dreams!”

Um.

Hero chuckled as he held out his toast to Kel.

“Here, be nice and open your mouth.”

“What?” He turned towards him, then grimaced as he saw the buttered toast approaching him. “Nope!”

“Come on, just one bite?”

“I—I'm not eight anymore! Hey, I'm trying to watch Captain Spaceboy!” He defended himself by pointing at the TV, with the main character in the middle of an epic action. At this, Hero admitted defeat and bit into the buttered toast. No, he wouldn't insist, although seeing Kel react like that always made him laugh a bit.

A little guilty pleasure, perhaps.
