Work Text:

The dim light of the parking garage cast long shadows over the rows of parked cars. Laurel Lance walked with purpose, her heels clicking against the concrete as she approached her father’s car. The weight of their earlier conversation hung heavily in the air, unresolved and festering. She found him sitting in the driver’s seat, his face a mask of weariness and resignation. As she opened the passenger door and slid in, the silence between them was thick, almost suffocating.

"Why would you even work with Damien Darhk?" Laurel’s voice broke the silence, sharp and demanding. "You told me earlier today how dangerous he is. How could you possibly justify this?"

Quentin Lance’s eyes flickered with a mix of guilt and frustration. He had expected this confrontation. Reaching into the glove compartment, he pulled out a stack of papers and handed them to her without a word.

Laurel took the papers, her brows knitting together as she began to read. Her eyes widened as she realized the gravity of what she was holding. Medical bills. Heart surgery. The total amount was staggering, and her father’s entire life savings were drained.

"Darhk knew I was practically broke," Quentin began, his voice low and defeated. "He knew I couldn’t afford the hospital bills that were piling up."

Laurel’s eyes filled with a mixture of anger and disbelief. "Why didn’t you come to me? I would have helped you. I’m your daughter, for God’s sake!"

Quentin shook his head, his expression pained. "I didn’t want to burden you, Laurel."

"Well, that’s convenient," she shot back, her tone dripping with sarcasm. "How many times have you told me to come to you for help? But when it’s the other way around..."

Quentin’s frustration bubbled over. "Why do you bust my balls for this?"

Laurel’s eyes blazed with intensity. "Because this isn’t about Sara anymore, and it sure as hell isn’t about Oliver. It’s about you cashing out, Dad."

Quentin sighed deeply, the weight of years of hardship evident in his eyes. "These past four years have been brutal, Laurel. Both physically and mentally. No medical insurance or retirement cushion. I’ve got, what, a year? Three at most left on the force. I’ve spent my whole life being a cop for this city, and I don’t want to walk away with nothing."

Laurel shook her head, tears brimming in her eyes. "After what happened with Sara, I hoped we could start over. But here we are, back at square one. You’ve become no better than any criminal you put away, and that hurts more than anything."

The silence between them was complete, the echoes of their confrontation reverberating in the enclosed space. Quentin stared ahead, the weight of his daughter’s words pressing down on him. He knew she was right, but the path he had chosen felt like the only one left.

Laurel’s heart ached with a mixture of betrayal and sorrow. She had always looked up to her father, a man of integrity and honor. Seeing him compromised, his principles eroded by desperation, was a bitter pill to swallow.

As the silence stretched on, both father and daughter were lost in their thoughts, grappling with the harsh reality of their situation. The bonds of trust and love that had held them together now strained under the weight of secrets and sacrifices.
