Work Text:
Today was that special day of the year, February 14th.
The one filled with lovey-dovey letters written by shy schoolgirls to give to their crushes. or at least that's what Okuyasu knew.
Truth be told, he hasn't been to school long enough to actually see what other teenagers do on Valentines day. But he's seen a confession or two on tv.. How hard can it be? As he finishes preparing for the school day, he writes a confession on a peice of paper. It's nothing fancy, but it should be able to work. Then he sealed it with a sticker and shoved the paper into his schoolbag with his other stuff. Soon leaving his house, he made his way over to Josuke's place.
It wasn't very far away, and Josuke would probably be waiting for him. Just thinking about it made him a little nervous, there wasn't really a plan other than "confess to Josuke" today.
Upon arrival, nobody was waiting for him, but its not that unusual. So he rung the doorbell to be promptly greeted by Tomoko, who would tell him Josuke was still getting ready. He'd stepped inside and waited by the door, staring blankly at the floor.
"Didn't mean to take so long!" Josuke called out as he ran down the stairs.
"It's nothin' Don't worry about it." Okuyasu replied, not looking up.
Josuke took his bag and headed outside with Okuyasu, and spoke again "So, do you have any plans today after school? I was thinking we could go do something and then hang out at my house." The answer was pretty obvious, and the same every time Josuke asked it. "Nah, nothin after school." He put his hands in his pockets, the winter chill starting to make itself clear.
The morning chatter was as usual, though there were enough breaks for Okuyasu to collect his thoughts and make a plan. He would act as usual during school, and afterwards he would confess to josuke at the local park. It wouldn't be all easy. Even the thought of actually handing Josuke that letter made him dizzy and lightheaded.
But he wouldn't chicken out, he couldn't. Today just felt like the day.

Morning classes would come and go, though it was hard to focus that day. Words didn't quite seem to translate into notes. Only half doodles and stolen glances.
Once it was time for lunch, he and Josuke sat by the school water fountain, and shared their food as per usual. The sky was clear, and the parting of what was a cloudy sky had made things a little warmer. There was a slight breeze, enough to disturb a few trees. Okuyasu looked over at Josuke for a moment, who seemed to be staring off into the distance. He wasn't sure why they weren't talking, or why he didn't seem to strike a conversation up. Just that this was kind of.. Nice. A calm and shared silence. Some time to remind him just how damn pretty his best friend was.
His purplish-blue eyes, and how they shimmered when he was excited. Or the way he'd smile deviously when he came up with their next money making scheme (which only would get them 10,000 Yen at best). The pins on his outfit, the carefully crafted pompadour, his long eyelashes. The determined fierceness he had when fighting a stand user, and the triumphant high five they would give each other once it was over. And how he would—
"Hey, Josuke!" a high voice cut through his thoughts.
Okuyasu looked over, watching a girl run up to Josuke. She was holding something in her hand. A letter with a heart sticker on it. Of course, this meant only one thing.
Josuke tried his best to subtly and calmly reject the confession. The girl seemed a little deflated afterwards, but took it well enough. Josuke was surprisingly good at this stuff, as if this was just something that happened sometimes.
Josuke then spoke again. "Hey, Oku?"
"Yeah?"
"Has anyone confessed to you yet?"
"Nah."
Josuke seemed to frown a little bit, but quickly recovered.
"I don't see why nobody has, I mean, you're the best dude I know. People should be all over you asking for a date." He brushed his fingers on the back of his neck and smoothed the hair down.
Okuyasu had no idea how to respond, opening his mouth a little before shutting it again. Not only that, but the general feeling of the conversation made him feel as if it was best to leave josuke on that statement. A gentle silence. So he didn't respond, instead staring nowhere in particular.
The sounds of students walking through the hallways signaled to them the end of lunchtime, and they would split apart into their own classes. On his way, Okuyasu glanced over and saw another girl head up to Josuke and hand him a letter. Geez, this really did happen a lot, didn't it? It made him feel a little worse about his own, of which didn't even have an envelope.
The rest of his classes begin, and he doesn't even bother paying attention, and so the rest of the school day breezes by. He'll have to ask Koichi for his notes later.
The last bell rings and he meets Josuke at the exit, then walking together.
"So where do you wanna hangout today? It's your turn." Josuke spoke.
Okuyasu panicked a little, it was time to actually do what he had been planning, not just think about how it could go in class. Just.. meet at the park and tell him. "I think the park would be good, sunny skies today, and its a little warmer than usual." He breathed in and out. Okay, he had that part down.
"Sounds good, we can hang there for a bit and maybe get a snack later, I forgot to pack most of my lunch today." He fidgeted with his heart pin, twisting it from side to side.
He's been fidgeting more today.
The park wasn't far from their school, usually they wouldn't visit it because it was full of classmates after school. But today, most would be elsewhere, so it should be clear. Or atleast, thats what Okuyasu thought about it. He could feel his heartrate pick up, and anxiety wearing at him.
As they walked past the parked cars and bicycles, Josuke spotted a particularly large tree near the corner of the park. It seemed perfect for his confession. He and Josuke sat down and leaned on its bark, setting their bags down. Okuyasu took this as an opportunity to take the letter out and set it next to him, but away from where Josuke could see. (he had put it in an easy spot, luckily for him.)
Now was the time, he couldn't fail here. Josuke started a conversation and Okuyasu followed along, waiting for his chance and when he was ready. What felt like years would pass, and maybe for a second he doubted it would ever come. Until...
*sigh* "and there were so many confessions and love letters today, I think I got even more than last year."
Maybe Okuyasu's brain had just stopped working. Or maybe he was stupid, but he said something without thinking.
"Have room for another one?" He reached over and handed Josuke the letter.
Josuke looked stunned for a second and read it. With that same stare he could only remember from Josuke's nephew.
Oh god. Oh god this was a mistake. He's going to ruin their friendship and it's his fault. He's going to get rejected because hes stupid and can't confess correctly. Josuke will hate him and never talk to him again and its all his fault hes just such a bad person an—
"Oh my god-- bro-- I like you too! Of course Ill be your boyfriend!"
Wait actually accepted? Holy shit-- Maybe he was actually gonna have a heart attack.
"Wait you-- you actually--" He stuttered as he stared at Josuke.
"Bro!! Of course I like you back! I've been staring at you all day for like-- months," Josuke replied "Just look at how I interact with Koichi compared to you, I fidget and fumble like an dummy when i'm around you!"
"I just thought you were bored and trying to look out the window! And I didn't think much about the fidgeting!" Okuyasu defended himself.
"Okay, I guess thats reasonable. Maybe I wasn't as obvious as I thought." He put his hands in his pockets.
He paused for a second and spoke again "Hey, wait, I have an idea."
"uh-- yeah??" Okuyasu swallowed, still stunned.
"Because you're now uh, my boyfriend.. How about we go on a date tomorrow?"
"sure, uh.. What time..?" Hearing those words from Josuke sounded so great, a dream come reality.
"How about.." He paused "5. We can get dinner and watch some movies at my place."
"I'd love to."
